A list of puns related to "Privacy in file sharing networks"
First thing I thought of was to recommission a D-Link router I have and install openwrt on it. Was able to relay the WiFi signal but was not happy about the performance drop. I have read that introducing a relay or a repeater in the middle of WiFi effectively halves the speed. I've resigned myself to continue connecting to the owner's WiFi directly but if I can run my own separate network for all my purposes, that would be great. What are my options?
I have a raspberry pi server setup in the U.S, and I have a client iPad in China, with a vpn tunnel that allows me to connect the iPad to the raspberry pi serverโs network remotely. When VPN is connected, the iPadโs file app can't connect to raspberry piโs server to do file sharing, even though the iPad is virtually in the same LAN with the raspberry pi server. What's the problem here? Other iOS devices physically in the same network have no issue connecting to the server.

Welcome to the October project dev update!
This month has been busy โ our long awaited Data Unions launch commenced, and we began our marketing push to developers around the world. We also announced the Streamr Data Challenge, a hackathon for India-based developers and teams. The hackathon will run over the next few months with a focus on building new data economies through Data Unions.

The Streamr tokenomics model is always a hot topic for the community, so weโre thrilled to announce weโll be having an open session with BlockScience in November to discuss exactly that. Weโll be covering whatโs been done in relation to tokenomics, where we are now, and whatโs up ahead. To this end, weโre asking the community for suggestions on specific questions or topics youโd like us to cover. Please reach out with your thoughts to me on Telegram or by email.

And as usual, weโve been busy working towards our roadmap goals. Here are the development highlights of the month:
Two internal workshops were held to develop a precise understanding of the KPIs for each role in the Network. These exercises complete the final pieces of the model and allow us to transition into Phase 3 โ running the first simulations of the Network.
... keep reading on reddit โกSo I noticed I have a Public folder in Home. I would really like to be able to access it from another KDE computer. How do I go about doing that exactly?
If i right-click in Dolphin -> Properties -> There's a Share button that I can select.
In my mind that folder should now be available on my local network.
On my laptop, I launch Dolphin, click on Network...but then I can't find it any where.
Can anyone help me out?
Edit: Another annoying thing is that I can't "save" the share status of the Public folder. If I restart, I need to reenable Share from Dolphin...which is annoying.
Hello all! Pardon if this is a naive question as I'm fairly new to all of this.
Long story short, I just got my hands on a Wallstreet G3 (I just posted a picture in this subreddit if you wanna see) and so far it's running great! It currently boots OS 8.5 (though I plan on upgrading it to 9 soon) and I've got it connected to my network via ethernet, but I've struggled with sharing files from my PC to the Powerbook. Is this simply because the G3 is just too old to recognize my Windows 10 PC, or maybe the OS difference in general is the problem?
I would ideally just use a CD drive to read/write files but my model only has the floppy drive and I've been unsuccessful in finding a CD drive module available online. At this point I'm just considering getting a floppy USB drive and some diskettes to write files from my PC and do it that way, but if I can accomplish this in a simpler manner that would be awesome too.
Thanks in advance, I'm excited to screw around with it some more!
I have a customer that's having re-occurring issues getting to a scanner on the network because Network Discovery/File Sharing keeps turning off. It's happening twice a week now so I want to get this figured out.
I've confirmed it's set up correctly in 'Advanced Sharing Options' and confirmed the related services were set to Automatic. I'm not sure what to try next. Any tips would be very appreciated. Thank You!
Hey guys and gals,
So Iโm looking for a privacy focused photo sharing app. Think Cluster, but wonโt get shut down for sharing nudity, etc.
Preferably with admin controls to wipe out the bad actors.

Hello everybody,
I am quite interested interested in networking and encryption, and I thought about doing a project to learn more about the topic.
I have done the following p2p project (not intended to be run on production). Hope you can give it a look and also tell me what you think. All details, such as usage, installation or references are in the README.
All feedback is totally appreciated :-)

I noticed recently that google drive does not allow you to view pirated files on it, event if they were uploaded on your drive and never shared. Doesnโt this have questionable privacy implications??
Also, which way would you recommend to share files between two personal computers (other that hard drives.
So I tried sharing files from 1 computer to another through LAN Cable but it only stays in the Network tab. Is there any way I can share the files directly to destination computer's local drive instead of network?
I just got a network card (coax and RJ45) for my new (well...) 486 PC and installed the card... but now I have no idea what to do next. Never did any networking in my DOS days so not sure what is needed. Presumably a DOS driver (pretty sure the card is an NE2000 clone), but then what?
Someone recommended mTCP which sounds awesome, but I have no idea how to set that up or how to interact with it from my modern PC (FileZilla, WinSCP or something similar?).
I've done some searching, but haven't been able to find a DOS guide anywhere. Just need to know what to install so I can copy files to and from my modern PC and DOS 486.
Getting internet access on the 486 would be cool but it's really just file transferring I need.
Bit of warning: So just got mail that Revolut is updating privacy policy in order to be able to share customer data with marketing platforms (for argeted ads).
This is toatly douche move, if you want to manage your "settings" you have to send mail ...

Update: Just chatted with support - you can exercise right to object processing data for marketing purposes by chat. By default Revolut will share your data with ad networks. I also requested complete copy of my data and information where and if they were shared up to this time. We will see. They need to obey that request.
Back in the day, I used an android phone app called SuperBeam (it is very buggy now with the new versions of the OS), which only the host had to have. Basically you choose the files you want to transfer and open them there. And it displays to you your local IP address and a port number. It doesn't use internet (doesn't require connection) just both devices need to be on the same wireless network.
The other side opens any browser they like and type the ip:port and they are welcomed to another simple interface that displays the files to share listed and the ability to either download some of them, or download them all.
I am mainly using Linux, and I think this is a very simple idea of ports that it has to be implemented by someone, but I couldn't find it at all. Bonus points for FOSS, and support for other OSs (namely android and Windows).

So I just finished building our new Plex/backup/file server, running on Ubuntu. I have all of our documents located on there, and shared out to the network via Samba. We have a few pc's in the house and I'd like to point their "My Documents" folders and whatnot to the samba share, so that no matter which pc they log into, they have all the same files there, and they will get backed up nightly by my backup scripts. That way I don't have to worry as much about backing up individual pcs and for the most part everything will get automatically put on the home server and backed up nightly.
Pointing My Documents to another directory is easy enough, even pointing it to the network share. The question is, do I need to do full on folder redirection with group policy and whatnot, or is it ok to just point the My Documents folder to the network share and call it good? What are the pros and cons of each?
I think if I were to just point My Documents to the network share, there could be problems if for some reason my file server were down, or not available on the network for some reason, right? With file redirection, I think there is an option to do offline files so they can still work if not on the network? We don't currently have any windows laptops in the house, but when we do, that would become a bigger problem when it is taken out of the house.
My biggest goal here is to have a high WAF (wife acceptance factor). I don't want to shift everything to using the network share, and then any time there is a problem on the network or the file server, my wife and family have troubles simply logging into the pc's in our house. So I'm thinking folder redirection is probably the best. But it just seems overly complex to set up, and I don't really care to have Active directory or GPM installed. (but will if I have to)
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Hi guys!
I'm currently working in a small engineering firm and we both need access to files through windows file explorer to work with our software. At the moment, we share a folder over a single network in office, this file is then where project work is saved to then allow multiuser editing and access.
However, since we are needing to work form home at the moment, we want to find a solution to allow us to continue to to this, but from our home networks.
I have had suggestions of OneDrive, however, the problem with this is that without purchasing OneDrive for business, the shared folders cannot be pinned within file explorer for our software to have read/write access too. (if this sounds incorrect do let me know but this has been my experience thus far.)
I was thinking of trying to setup (if possible) some sort of file server that we could access from external networks. This folder / location will need to be accessed from within file explorer (e.g pinned in quick access) so that our software can open and save to this location.
We have a few spare laptops around so not sure if one of these could be utilized? Also, since this is only a temporary solution, we would prefer the most cost effective solution!
Thanks in advance :)
