I have never in my life seen an interesting phase or change in a band other than Radiohead and beatles. It took me 3 days to cover all albums starting from piper at the gates of dawn. Personally I enjoyed the first album and I'd rate it as a 8.5 - 9. I really enjoyed the sweet lyrics and tone of Syd Barrett. There's something memorable about the first album well at least in my opinion.
A saurceful of secrets isn't as good as the first album or memorable in my opinion. Im still gonna give it another try but as if now the album doesn't feel as memorable and I wasn't really that interested in seeing what comes next therefore the album has to be a 6 in my opinion. I'll give it another try but I personally loved Syds take on the first album.
More and Ummaguma are strange albums in my opinion. I have heard them both and I slowly started to get bored. A few songs catched my attention though such as crying song, green is the color, careful with that axe Eugene. I personally had a difficult time with this album. I'd give more a 5 and Ummaguma a 4. Im gonna listen to again.
In my opinion the next two albums were such turning points. Atom Heart Mother has such a vibrant sound that I can't help but love. Meddle has that nature sound and echoes god don't get me started. If I had to rate these 2 albums I'd give AHM a 8 and Meddle an 8.5. Really good albums in my opinion. I really felt like pink floyd found their actual signature sound with these 2 albums therefore I love them.
The next album Obscured by clouds is kinda strange its not very memorable in my opinion but it is okay. I think im gonna it another try because I see it as a 6.5-7. Sorry if im wrong but I really just didn't find it amazing compared to the next 4 albums.
In my opinion Dark Side Of The Moon was their absolute beginning of legendary albums. This album had a feeling. Something I wish I could explain. It's like music on drugs almost its just probably the best album to ever exist probably. If this album is not a 10 what is am I right? Like Holly shit the first time I listened to it changed me. Definitely a 10.
Next album another masterpiece.. Wish you were here. God I fucking love this like this album like oh my this is from the fucking 70s yet sounds like the fucking future. It gives me a beautiful melancholic vibe. This album is perfection I'd personally give it a 9.5-10.
The other masterpiece after that 2 years later is Animals. I just had a first listen and couldn't help but have so much r

It goes without saying that Echoes is a grand achievement in 20+ minute experimental rock. A Pillow of Winds is both classic Floyd and subversive for their type with its romantic melodies and lyrics that can be enjoyed by the firepit on a winter night. Fearless is subdued and inspirational in all the right ways, with the icing being its ending that samples the 1945 showtune You'll Never Walk Alone. They didn't waste a single note on this record, and all done with the cover of a close-up of an ear. The most famous rendition of Echoes was gloriously performed in Pompeiiโbringing the ancient rhythms of it and influence from A Saucerful of Secrets to their rightful place.
The Wall (1979): According to aggregate website Acclaimed Music, what's perhaps the most notorious concept album is the 166th most acclaimed album in historyโand rightfully so. Much of the reverie explored in prior works like the three that came before (ie. Brain Damage) come full steam ahead with what's their most psychologically taxing record. Amidst 1970s stadium Rock and their constant reminders of wanting to do nothing but skullduggery or rebel against the powers that be, the end of the decade had Waters and company going in the other direction. The early tracks take us from the aftereffects of World War II to a tattered childhood, with all roads leading to rock star debauchery at its most ugly but performed to its audience with the ease of snake charmers. Out comes our anti-hero Pink, an unlikely composite of Waters and Syd Barrett, whose dreams of becoming a fascist leader and pillaging to compensate for all the wrongdoings done to him are almost Shakespearean. This incendiary production has been seamlessly translated to audio, the silver screen and a live concert epic that commemorated the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Wish You Were Here (1975): After being catapulted to the mainstream, where do they head to? What could've been a disaster of a record or broke up the band not only held them together on borrowed time, but also became their most personal album to date. In under 44 minutes our ears give away to an emotional arena for their alienation, disillusionment towards the music industry and most of all their monument to Syd Barrett. The last of whichโShine On You Crazy Diamond, not only perfectly reutilizes the soprano-esque vocal ele
Whatโs up, so music has always been a passion of mine and I love all kinds and so many different artists spanning so many different genres. Recently Iโve gone through sort of a โreawakeningโ with music lol basically Iโve just been going through artists discographies and listening to everything theyโve done to gain some perspective on their music and just have a better understanding of what it is that they did and why it was what it was essentially.
Iโve listened through most of Bill Withers albums, The Black Keys, Led Zeppelin, most of Kendrick Lamars stuff, A Tribe Called Quest, Iโm 7 albums deep in The Beatles discography and so on and so on.
But so far the artist that Iโve just gained a whole new appreciation for is one youโve probably heard of, Pink Floyd, lol.
So obviously we all know who they are(I feel like we do right?) anyways I grew up around a lot of old music and so Iโve always known who they were and even knew the big hits since I had a dad who would bump classic rock radio until the sun went down, so yeah itโs always been there for me, their music just lingering in the back ground, but Iโll keep it real with you I never gave it much thought.
For me I really only wanted to listen to The Wall all the way through because itโs always considered one of the best albums ever made but itโs also their 11th studio album so I really felt like I was doing them a disservice by skipping the previous 10.
So
I was like โfuck itโ and I started at the top and let me tell you Iโm so glad I did.
Thereโs too much to say here about their music, especially their early work from 67-71, because the albums vary in terms of their composition and depth, but yesterday I finished the first 7 albums and finally got to the โpeak yearsโ of Pink Floyd starting in 73โ with an album weโve probably all seen the cover of, โThe Dark Side of The Moonโ. I listened to it and was not at all disappointed and in fact what I had read about the album was reinforced upon completing my listen through of it. Following that up with โWish you were hereโ which is my favorite one so far, just a great album from top top bottom and David Gilmours work on guitar on this album in particular is truly legendary.
If 11 albums is too much to take in I totally understand which is why you should most definitely listen from Dark side of the Moon to The Wall if nothing else, but let me tell you, if you listen from their first album all the way through, itโs truly awesome to see their music c

This is definitely my favourite of the 5 Floyd albums Iโve heard so far. Here are my track by track thoughts.
The title track on this album is the single longest song I have ever heard at this point in my life. But thankfully it has good pacing for the most part. As well as a lot of variety. I love those brass sections in the opening. Creates a great sense of spectacle. Those choral vocals that come in are super eerie and vibey. Big fan of those. Theyโre a great addition. Excellent guitar work here too; very engaging. The creepy noises at around the 16 minute mark are interesting even if I donโt necessarily love listening to them. The only part where the song faltered for me was at around the 17-19 minute mark. All the stuff there felt kinda unnecessary. You could have cut that section and have lost nothing of note. But the song does come to a satisfying end that brings back many of the sounds previously used in the song. Making for a good send off to this singular song that has more variety within itself than a lot of full length albums. Yeah I like this one a lot. This is a very strange comparison. But the vibe I got from a lot of the parts of this song was basically โA Studio Ghibli movie but itโs creepy instead of comfortingโ.
If is pretty good. A nice, quiet, and simple slow down after the incredibly complex song before it. Very calming and sorta serene. Good track.
Summer 68 starts off nice quiet. Sorta like the last track but piano driven. But then thereโs that abrupt shift where the track becomes a lot more lively and I love it. Thereโs some interesting production on the vocals at the beginning if that shift. Interesting in a good way. I love the horns here even more than I loved them on the title track. Theyโre used perfectly here. The vocals are also notably good throughout this track. Everything about this song is just incredibly solid. This is the best one here.
Fat Old Sun is good but I really donโt have much to say about it. I like it well enough but it feels kinda forgettable. Thereโs nothing explicitly wrong with the track. But nothing that stands out as particularly great. Itโs good but kinda whatever.
Alanโs Psychedelic Breakfast is a bit of a mixed bag. Those voices rambling about food in the beginning are a good tone setter, and there are some absolutely lovely pianos come in after that. However, the food sounds throughout the song are very very unnecessary. The guitar at around the 4 minute mark is n

This is, again, the best Pink Floyd album that Iโve heard so far. Other then the 2 in 1969, these albums have only been getting better. Hereโs the track by track breakdown.
One of These Days is a track that Iโve already heard (itโs on the โEchoes: Best of Pink Floydโ compilation, which Iโve known for a couple years now) The song has a great build to it. Every aspect of this song builds a big sense of anticipation. I love that synth piano or whatever it is. I donโt know what itโs called and I feel like I should. Itโs dope either way though. Some cool guitar distortion here as well as a very good baseline. The voice that bellows right before the songโs climax always reminds me of Shrek. Said climax is a good payoff to all the build up but something in me feels like it could have been a lot more gratifying. Itโs still a good payoff though, and this song is an excellent opener all around
I love the vibe of A Pillow of Winds. Itโs wonderfully chill. Beautiful guitars all around. Electric, acoustic, & bass. All great. Very nice vocals as well. And above all, this song is just utterly relaxing and I love that. Great track.
The first thing that struck me about Fearless was that it REALLY reminded me of The Eagles. At least in regards to the instrumental. And thatโs certainly not a bad thing. This song is just super solid all around. Itโs kinda generic but not in a way that is ever a hindrance. It just adds to the fact that the song is very solid. A very straight forward but good song. Also itโs a very funny and cursed sentence to say โBoth Pink Floyd & Taylor Swift have a song called Fearlessโ.
San Tropez. This is kinda hard to describe but this songโs sound reminds me of a very specific culture. Like I donโt know if Iโll thinking of Italy, France, or Spain. Whatever country the atmosphere of this song is reminding me of, I love it. Overall, the song is super well composed as well as very fun. Yet another great track.
Seamus is ok. The dog sounds are a little weird, but NO WHERE NEAR as distracting as the background noise on โAlanโs Psychedelic Breakfastโ from the last album. The guitar playing in this song is fun. The track works quite well as a penultimate moment before Echoes. A calm before the storm if you will. And the piano reminds me of that recent Pixar film โSoulโ. That is a good thing. That movieโs soundtrack was amazing. Decent track on the whole.
Echoes is another one that I have heard already. It was a

Musically speaking, I feel that they took far bolder risks and had much grander instrumentation on a number of albums such as Animals, Wish You Were Here, Dark Side of the Moon, not to ignore many of their earlier albums, which vary in quality for me personally, but which also definitely showed a desire to experiment.
'The Wall' is conceptually very strong; I'm actually a fan of Roger Waters as a songwriter but I just find that more often than not, the concepts and themes present on 'The Wall' take centre stage and priority, leaving the music either making me want more from it, or not really panning out in a way I find particularly enjoyable or exciting to listen to.
Just my personal take, it's totally cool if you disagree or you love 'The Wall', just thought it would be cool to put up as a personal opinion.
Cheers :)
Ps: Maybe even a hotter take, but I personally prefer 'The Final Cut' by a long shot but maybe a topic for another time :)
Fast speeds. Enjoy!

Piper: very good album, picks up the popular rock sound that was going around at that time that I enjoy but also adds cool sounds and stuff. I like how Syd's lyrics are rooted in English literature and have this sort of nursery rhyme sound to it sometimes.
Saucerful of Secrets: only liked a few songs. the song saucerful of secrets is eh but the ending is really nice. Pretty much have the same view of all the albums that were right after Syd leaving. They were too weird sounding and only some I liked
More: liked more songs here: I liked how they were starting to get to that melancholy sound that suits them. I also like the energy in Nile Song.
Ummagumma: about the same thoughts as Saucerful of Secrets but maybe a little worse than Saucer. Narrow Way is pretty good though.
Atom Heart Mother: I like it. I like how they use a band and it's very acoustic. Not a bad album. Also Alan likes marmalade.
Relics: I sort of like this a little more than Piper. It had less weird sounds and the style was a really nice version of something similar to the Beatles. Very good album. Has a really cool version of Careful with that Axe, Eugene, and songs like Arnold Layne and See Emily Play are really fun to listen to.
Meddle: The album Pink Floyd started to get their sound. Really love this album and how it's like a mix of Dark Side of the Moon's guitar and the weird noises from previous albums. However, I like the Pompeii version of Echoes better. Bass is more fonky and David's lead guitar section with a lot of overdrive has more to it.
Obscured by Clouds: Pretty underrated. Songs like Childhood's End are really catchy and it also has some really nice acoustic sounding songs.
Dark Side of the Moon: one of their best albums. Kind of like it more than the Wall. I like the idea of making the album one big song. Great spacious sounds and I like that there is a balance in band members. David contributed, Roger contributed, Nick, and Rick all had their contributions and there didn't seem to be much of a dominant member.
Wish you Were Here: Might be my favourite album. Every song is just great starting with the masterpiece of Shine On you Crazy Diamond and then Welcome to the Machine which has amazing synth sounds, Have a Cigar is super fonky and fun to listen to and Wish You Were Here is impossible not to sing-along to. The it closes with a groovy version of Crazy Diamond. love it.
Animals: Roger is definitely taking more control. Still a good album and is sort

I have always considered myself a Pink Floyd "fan" but I was missing a LOT of their back catalogue.
It was a very fun journey. I listened to some albums twice. I mixed it up with a lot of live stuff on Youtube. I didn't touch any solo work (yet). The entire thing took approx 30 hours give or take.
Favourite Album
Hard to tell really. I am not sure I could definitely choose. But it would be between DSOTM, WYWH and ANIMALS
Least Favourite
It feels way too easy to say UMMAGUMMA. I would say I was "most disappointed" by DSOT.
Most underrated Banger
Free Four
Favourite Song
At the moment I think it would have to be Echoes (Live In Gdansk)
I loved a lot of stuff on AHM, OBC and MORE. Problem is I did this while riding my bike and a lot of tracks I won't even know the name of. I'll have to do it again.
It was really cool to see where they began, and where they ended up, and how they progressed.
Personally, I would recommend starting by going through the golden years chronologically:
1- DSOTM
2- WYWH
3- Animals
4- The Wall
Then, going back to the early years and moving up to pre-DSOTM, skipping some:
5- The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
6- A Saucerful of Secrets
7- Atom Heart Mother
8- Meddle
9- Obscured by Clouds
And the rest can be listened to in any order (not as big a fan of the later years).
What would you recommend?

This is the most interesting album Iโve heard from Pink Floyd so far. At least itโs the one that I have the most to say about. For this one Iโm gonna have to go track by track.
Circus Minor was a very mysterious and vibey opener. Definitely piqued my interest.
The Nile Song was very unexpectedly heavy. A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. This is one of my favourite tracks here.
Crying song was very nice and chill. Really liked this one.
Up The Khyber was weird and disjointed but not boring. Thatโs very important to note.
Green is The Colour is the best song here. The first Pink Floyd song in my journey through their discography that Iโve actually felt sorta connected to. It made me a little emotional actually. Great song.
Cymbaline was immediately memorably. The chorus is surprisingly catchy. Good song.
Party Sequence is just Bongos. And I am ok with this. Itโs a bop.
Main Theme is the first track where I was actually quite bored. This is what I was worried that the whole album would sound like. Thankfully I was wrong.
Ibiza Bar is another pretty heavy track in the same vein as The Nile Song. And while I donโt like it quiet as much as Nile Song, itโs still a great track and one of my favourites here.
More Blues is vibey as hell. Quite liked this one.
Quicksilver is an interesting exercise in ambience. But it does become quite tedious and boring after a while. Still ok though.
A Spanish Piece is very odd. That spoken word stuff is kinda funny from a certain point of view but also very off putting. I wish it was just the instrumental because that part was rather nice.
And then Dramatic Theme brings the album to a completely unremarkable finish. I barely even remember what it sounds like and I didnโt even finish the album an hour ago.
So people had warned me before hand that this was one of the worst Pink Floyd album and a bit of a chore to get through. But I donโt think that at all. I liked this one quite a bit.
If the last few tracks werenโt so underwhelming it would be easily my favourite of the 3 Pink Floyd albums Iโve heard so far.
And even though this album has far more singular tracks that I will be coming back to, A Saucerful of Secrets is still the better & more consistent album. ASOS also has a much more satisfying ending.
But even with that said. This is a pretty good record. A very solid entry in the Pink Floyd albums Iโve heard so far.
Hereโs my ranking as of right now:
https://youtu.be/fcFrivOpCwc
This was a very noticeable improvement over their first album. TPATGOD felt kind of meandering and aimless in regards to its identity as an album. But this one feels a lot more purposeful, focused, and concise.
This album is fairly well paced and a lot more engaging then the last one. Thereโs also a bit more variety here. A far more attention grabbing set of sounds.
That said the albums far from amazing. โSet the Controls for the Center of the Sunโ becomes rather tedious after a while. I have issues with the mixing on โLet There Be More Lightโ. And the first minute or so of โCorporal Cleggโ kinda sucked. The song became a lot better as it went along with that Kazoo-like sound. But dang, the opening was really rough.
โJugband Bluesโ is a little weirdly structured but that final verse makes for a very good concluding moment on the album. This band really has a knack for well paced โlong songsโ. The Title Track had a very vibey soundscape and certainly did not feel 12 minutes longs. Very well paced that one.
My favourite song was definitely See-Saw though. Just very solid all around. Again; Nothing spectacular, but still quite solid. I liked the acoustic guitars on this track specifically.
So yeah. Pretty good album overall. Definite improvement over the last one.
My ranking so far:
If you want to know my thoughts on the previous album: https://www.reddit.com/r/pinkfloyd/comments/mg7wnx/i_have_officially_begun_my_journey_of_listening/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
What are your guyโs thoughts on my thoughts?
https://youtu.be/16V-wNwlTw0
Again. Iโll be reviewing this track by track.
The Title Track is a decent instrumental track. I like itโs mysterious vibe and that synth thatโs used. But itโs not a very compelling opener.
When Youโre In is ok. But it just feels kinda unnecessary to the album in every way. Probably the weakest song here.
Burning Bridges is nice enough. Itโs good to mellow out to. But itโs still rather un-engaging. If Iโm being perfectly honest. These are a pretty weak set of opening tracks.
โThe Gold, Itโs in the-โ Finally gives the album a little bit of momentum. Itโs nothing special but itโs pretty fun.
Ok I was really vibing with โWotโs Uh The Deal?โ. Itโs kinda relaxing, but itโs still very engaging and interesting unlike the opening moments on this album. Really good vocals here specifically as well. This song is just super solid all around and definitely the best song here.
Mudmen reminded me of a few โyet to comeโ throughout its runtime. Some sound in the first minute felt very Radiohead to me. But most of the track sounds a lot like early Tame Impala. Would not be surprised if Kevin Parker liked this album. This is definitely the best purely instrumental track on the album. And it got better as it went along. Pretty solid.
I have literally nothing to about โChildhoodโs Endโ. I legit cannot remember anything about it and I just finished the album. I remember it being just fine. But I really canโt recall any of itโs specific characteristics.
The opening of Free Four reminded me of Weezer for a second. Make of that what you will. I liked the guitar in this track. In general, Iโd say that this is the most upbeat track on the album. I quite like this one. Itโs solid.
Stay is also solid. Itโs very soulful. Itโs got good guitars and especially good pianos. Itโs also a little weird which I can appreciate.
I like the vibey instrumental that most of โAbsolutely Curtainsโ consists of. But what I really like about this song is that childrenโs choir at the very end. Itโs a really nice element and I actually love that section as an ending to the album. Itโs legitimately kinda cute. Thatโs not something I ever thought I would say about a Pink Floyd album but here we are.
So overall this was good. Not great but better than ok. It starts off really weak but finishes out relatively strong. Itโs not one other the best Iโve heard from them but I still like it.
Heres my ranking thus far:
