ELI5: what was wrong with Phil Hammond's equalisation of national insurance contributions?

At a time when government needs every penny it can get, why shouldn't we have a fair tax system that treats everyone fairly?

It feels like the main opponents of this were high paid owner-managers who wouldn't be able to pay themselves as self-employed contractors. The papers made a lot out about self-employed cabbies, but their changes would be minimal (unless they're receiving more than a doctor would, in which case maybe they should be taxed equally?)

What do you guys think? I feel like Hammond's changes showed courage and seriousness about tackling tax avoidance. The climbdown makes me dispair

Thus far on SNL, who has been the best portrayal of Donald Trump?

Some guys (like this non SNL guy) just sounds like Trump: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwE-WIdIzz8&t=28s

But there have been a number of Trump impersonators on SNL going as far back as the 1980s with Phil Hartman. Hartman does not score the highest for the overall sound, look, and mannerisms of Trump, but he is damned funny, and he's probably one of the greatest talents in SNL history. So its hard not to bring him up.

For me, Hammond and Baldwin are tied. Their impersonations are different in some ways, but they are both so great.

Sudakis did Trump once or twice, as did Killam, I think, but I confess I've never seen it. (or I just can't recall)

That leaves the current player, James Austin Johnson, whose voice, cadence, manner and other intangibles are just uncanny! What is missing somewhat is the overall look, the size, the age. But this stuff that they can continue to work on with make-up. Plus, we will just get used to it as Johnson grows more and more into the roll. Johnson is well on his way to being the best Trump impersonator on SNL and perhaps everywhere else!

.

.

.

.

.

I guess I'll show my political cards here when I say this.... I hope there is less and less need for SNL to use a Trump impersonator as we more forward.

'Dune' Review Megathread

Legendary Picture's Dune premiered on September 3rd at the 78th Venice Intl Film Festival and reviews are coming in. Please post them to the subreddit as you find them. We will be collecting them in this post for easy reference.

Articles are grouped into two categories below: those containing spoilers, and those which are spoiler-free. Please be aware that the same applies to the respective articles' comment chains.

Rotten Tomatoes: 84% (343 reviews), 7.70 average rating

Metacritic: 75/100 (54 critics), "generally favorable reviews"

Spoiler-free reviews

Cinemablend, Eric Eisenberg - 4.5/5

>It’s an exceptional and special big screen experience, and does an incredible job laying the foundation for what is an expansive, unique universe, but it also can’t help but feel like the serving of a decadent and delicious appetizer that comes out while the epic entrΓ©e to come is still braising in the kitchen.

The Daily Beast, Marlow Stern

>One area of concern lies in Dune’s softening of Herbert’s book’s Islamism. While the cast is far more diverse than Lynch’s Aryan lovefest, there is nary a Middle Eastern actor in sight, and its Islamic influences are relegated to terminology, e.g. β€œShai-Hulud,” β€œMahdi” and β€œLisan al Gaib.” The Fremen too, symbolizing Arab peoples, have been mostly pushed to the background, though will likely factor in more in future installments.

Deadline, Pete Hammond

>No matter what your opinion is of the source material, this vision for bringing it alive as a movie deserves only premium exhibition.

Den of Geek, David Crow - 4.5/5

>Dune is an astonishing swing of ambition and passion from filmmakers at the top of their craft, and it more often than not connects like a thunderbolt.

What 2021 album probably won’t make any end-of-year best-of lists, but you’re glad it was released?

Here are some of mine that aren’t necessarily the best releases of the year, but that I enjoyed:

  • Tomahawk - Tonic Immobility (always good to hear from this supergroup)
  • Tele Novella - Merlynn Belle (didn’t know they were still together! there’s no one like them)
  • Charlie Parr - Last of the Better Days Ahead (back from injury and still killing it)
  • Phil Cook - All These Years (a bit different from his previous albums, but I’m willing to follow him wherever)
  • Sleater-Kinney - Path of Wellness (not as visceral as their early albums, but who is?)
  • Ross Hammond - It’s Been Here All Along (love this guy, great chilling out music)

I know I’m forgetting some, and I’m purposely leaving off albums that probably will make some best-of lists (Mastadon, Gojira, Black Country New Road, IDLES, Jon Batiste) and some I only discovered this year (Bicurious, Silver Talon, Lord Huron).

What are some of yours?

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Just because it's a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke

Alot of great jokes get posted here! However just because you have a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT NSFW, THIS IS ABOUT LONG JOKES, BLONDE JOKES, SEXUAL JOKES, KNOCK KNOCK JOKES, POLITICAL JOKES, ETC BEING POSTED IN A DAD JOKE SUB

Try telling these sexual jokes that get posted here, to your kid and see how your spouse likes it.. if that goes well, Try telling one of your friends kid about your sex life being like Coca cola, first it was normal, than light and now zero , and see if the parents are OK with you telling their kid the "dad joke"

I'm not even referencing the NSFW, I'm saying Dad jokes are corny, and sometimes painful, not sexual

So check out r/jokes for all types of jokes

r/unclejokes for dirty jokes

r/3amjokes for real weird and alot of OC

r/cleandadjokes If your really sick of seeing not dad jokes in r/dadjokes

Punchline !

Edit: this is not a post about NSFW , This is about jokes, knock knock jokes, blonde jokes, political jokes etc being posted in a dad joke sub

55 Years Ago Today, The Beach Boys unleashed their "Good Vibrations" onto the world for the first time.

It was 55 years ago today when Brian Wilson unleashed one of his greatest masterpieces onto the world for the first time.

The 45 single cover for \"Good Vibrations\".

"Good Vibrations" had been recorded over a period of many months. Brian started work on the song all the way back on February 19th, 1966. The song was recorded over a period of no fewer than 19 recording sessions, at four different studios throughout Hollywood, and at a cost of between 50,000 and 75,000 dollars (over 400,000-600,000 in today's dollars). Over 90 hours of tape was consumed in the making of the song.

The song's genesis came about from Brian's interest in extrasensory perception and cosmic vibrations. Cousin Mike Love wrote the lyrics on the way to the studio, inspired by the fledgling flower power movement. Middle brother and drummer Dennis Wilson was originally due to sing the lead vocal on the verses, but due to a bout of laryngitis, baby brother and lead guitarist Carl Wilson took over vocal duties. Dennis did contribute the Hammond organ solo during the "gotta keep those lovin' good vibrations a-happenin' with her" section.

"Good Vibrations" is perhaps most famous for it's use of tape splicing. Brian constructed different sections of the song separately, forming what became known as "pocket symphonies". He then spliced them together to form the final product. "Good Vibrations" is also noteworthy for popularizing the idea of "using the studio as an instrument". While this idea was first practiced by the like of Phil Spector, Brian, along with George Martin and the Beatles took this concept to a whole new level throughout 1966. The song also featured some novel instruments seldom heard on a pop-rock song, such as the Electro-Theremin and the jaw harp.

"Good Vibrations" was released on October 10th, 1966. The flip side was the instrumental "Let's Go Away for a While" from their recently released Pet Sounds LP. It quickly became the Beach Boys' biggest hit of their career. It soared to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and became their first UK #1. The single sold 230,000 copies within four days of release in America, and over 50,000 copies in the first two weeks of availability in the UK. It was the group's first million selling single.

A number of music videos were produced for the song. One music video [showed the group dressed up as fireme
