My wife and I planted a few pecan trees when we bought a home last year. Now I have learned about pecan truffles and am fascinated.
It looks like their are a few commercial sources for pecan saplings. We will purchase a "truffle tree" but I read a paper that discusses inoculation of pecans with truffles. I know it is very unlikely that I will be successful, but it sounds like a fun project for myself.
I was able to speak with one of the authors of the paper (Dr. Brenneman) who provided the truffles used in their research. He suggested it would be unlikely that I would be successful in finding truffles without a trained dog. Thus comes my question:
Does anyone in this community know of a legitimate source of T. lyonii? Their are a few sellers on etsy, but that sounds like a perfect scam. "Sure I have magic beans that are very unlikely to grow, and it will take you a decade to see results if there are any... but give me money." The Truffle Dog Company out of Washington has put me on their wait list. A few other sources in Georgia seem to have retired.
Do you think I should rake under a few pecan trees in my area at random? Take a shot with an etsy seller?
