The Information remix disc is so good. I can’t believe I had to buy an external optical drive just to hear these tracks again.

I have fond memories of wandering around NYC museums as a frustrated 20-something, back in 2007, listening to the David Andrew Sitek remix of Dark Star on my iPod. Every few years since that iPod broke, I’ve tried to find that song (without piracy), and finally just bought the damn cd and an optical drive.

So worth it. I’d forgotten that every other remix on that disc is also fantastic.

Edit: it’s worth mentioning that the delux version comes with a bunch of odd little stickers (like, really a lot) and a stick-by-numbers booklet... because of course it does. Not to be one of those physical media preachers, but I forgot how much I liked getting weird bonus stuff with CDs.

PS5 Digital or Optical Drive version! Which is more valuable in India? I just did a quick price comparison of some PS4 titles ( which would be available for PS5) in playstation store vs amazon/flipkart. From the initial looks of it, getting a disc version seems to be more valuable in long term.

Inspiron 3880 Optical Drive not reading disc

My father just got an Inspiron 3880 to replace his current aging computer. He has some older programs he wants to install for his regular work flow.

When we put the CD into the optical drive, we can hear the disc spin up for a bit, but will stop after about 20 seconds. No information shows up on file explorer about the disc. The optical drive seems to show up just fine in the device manager, but still, no data seems to be getting to the computer. Simple CD's like a music CD don't even show up.

I have already tried power cycling the computer and reseating the SATA port to the motherboard for the drive. Any ideas on how to further troubleshoot this issue?

DVD-RAMβ€”the only consumer optical format to store data in physically sectored concentric rings like a hard drive, rather than in a spiral groove. When it was introduced in 1999, the 4.7GB disc cost a fifth as much as common 4GB HDDs while retaining the same data access functionality.

Any problems replacing an HP ProBook 4530s optical disc drive (ODD) with a hard disk drive (HDD)?

UPDATE:

Works just fine.

So just from previous experience, I know HP whitelists some internal components of this laptop - e.g. the wireless card - so they can only be replaced by/upgraded to official HP parts. While the laptop will still boot with said components, it just won't recognize them at all.

Does anyone know if this is the case for the optical disc drive? I would like to replace it with a hard disk drive, but I'd rather not try to do that only to have the laptop refuse to even see the replacement.

Any ideas?

For those with experience using Blu Ray optical drives on PC - having an issue with a specific perfect condition disc not being read.

I have a Blu Ray optical drive for my PC that I don't typically use for movies, but lately I've taken to collecting physical copies/collector's editions of some of my favourite movies on Blu Ray. Haven't really had any issues until today.

I just got my French Collector's Edition for Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva in today. The movie and product is quite old, however I bought it from a seller who had it in pristine condition, still in it's shrink wrap. The discs (one Blu Ray, two DVDs) are also in perfect condition.

However, when I insert the Blu Ray disc into my optical drive, it isn't detected at all. The two DVDs are picked up just fine, and all of the other Blu Rays I have so far (including 4K HDR and imports from Japan) also work fine. But this one, despite being in absolutely pristine condition, just isn't detected by my drive.

Does anyone know why this might happen with a pristine disc?

PS4 still not reading discs after optical drive replacement

So I have a PS4 that does not read discs. I took it apart and found the little white roller thing was missing. I couldn’t find a replacement part so I ended up just getting a whole new optical drive. After installing that it still won’t read discs. The drive makes a bunch of noise when you turn it on and when it tries to do anything. I tried rebuilding the database and updating and am currently initializing tho my hopes are not high it will do anything.

Think I got a bad replacement drive or could something else be going on?

Re-use of former boot drives from other computers is a good way to back up family photos, or archive more serious content, since buying burnable optical discs costs valuable money that can go toward more serious resources.

My reason for wishing to re-use old hard drives from other computers outside of their original computer is because I want to take advantage of ample gigabytes of space if I have gigabytes of content I want to make a second copy of.

Sometimes, a computer hard drive can contain content that can be too important to not make a copy of in the event of a disk crash. Hard disks as individual items can costs many dollars of money when bought as an individual item, and this is why I like the idea of removing hard drives from their original computer if their original computer isn't worth reviving.

I think of gigabytes of data in an all-encompassing stance. Text documents, application software launch files, images, audio, video, encrypted files, etc.

While we have compressed data formats to reduce the disk space for an otherwise identical file that takes up more space, there's also encryption algorithms that use more disk space than the space of the original files, so sometimes you wanna encrypt other content and need more space to allow for an encrypted file that uses more megabytes than their non-encrypted counterparts.
