Mert a minap beszélgettem egy olyan igazi, múlt századi értelmiségi típusú emberrel, és mondott pár latin közmondást, szófordulatot, plusz előhozta a klasszikus műveltséghez hozzátartozó minden szokásos frázist, idézetet, stb. stb. stb. Ha suttyó akarnék lenni, azt mondanám sznob volt.
Erről pedig eszembe jutott, hogy vajon a mai világban fontos-e még a klasszikus műveltség? Helyesbítek, a múlt században klasszikus műveltségnek tartott műveltség? Latin közmondások, idézetek klasszikus művekből, mit mondott Freud, vagy Arisztotelész, filozófiai bölcseletek.
Említett nagyanyám művelt asszony volt, az 1900-as évek elején nagyon jó iskolában kapott igen jó neveltetést, igazi polgári családban nőtt fel, de szerencsére ő modern volt, nem ragadt meg abban a világban. Viszont a fickó akivel beszélgettem, bár láthatóan tudott dolgokat, de pl. azt nem, hogy a polipok csak pár évig élnek. (1-2, 2-5 fajtától függően, meg attól, hogy hím-e vagy nőstény) Amikor meg megemlítettem neki, hogy nézem az X-faktort, mint a véres rongyra úgy nézett rám.
Szóval kell nekünk még mindig ez a klasszikus műveltség? Elég-e a hagyományos, vagy otthon kell-e lenni a modern életben is? Popkultúra hozzá tartozik a műveltséghez? Kell-e tv-t nézni? Baj-e? Bunkó-e attól az ember?

I take it to mean: "the history (fates) of the manuscript are not something that I will write about here," but I'm not terribly familiar with this change of number, from the plural fata to the singular est quod, and was initially perplexed that it didn't read sunt quae. Is this a common ancient construction? Could someone point me to a paragraph in a grammar or some classical examples?

Seneca, Epistulae Morales 7, starts two sentences with "Non est quod" followed by the subjunctive + ut/ne + subjunctive:

> Non est quod timeas ne operam perdideris[, si tibi didicisti].
My (admittedly awkward) translations:
> There is no reason for the glory of publishing brilliancies to lead you out in public, that you should wish to lecture or dispute about these things.
> There is no reason for you to fear that you have wasted effort[, if you have learnt yourself].
Am I correct in seeing the "quod" as introducing a "relative clause of characteristic" (hence the first subjunctive), and that "non est quod" could be literally translated "there is not that such that ..."? Is the second dependent clause (ut/ne + subj.) a standard part of the construction, or does it just happen to be used twice here by Seneca?
Good translation: "When the toasts go 'round the table, you let none drink from your cup, Hormus? Is this haughtiness? Hell no! It is Humanity!"
