Microsoft Office 2016 Puns

Greetings all. I have been trying to install Microsoft Office 2016 by using this guide https://askubuntu.com/questions/975104/how-do-i-install-ms-office-2016-on-playonlinux and some other methods as well using Lutris, but I haven't had any success. When I try running Outlook or Word it just crashes.

I specifically just need Outlook for now, would be nice to have Teams as well. Has anyone had any success installing and running them?

Also, my issue specifically is that I need to use a third-party email with Outlook but the web interface does not allow this currently, so if anyone has a solution for this I won't need to download the desktop application and would save a ton of hassle. Any advice is greatly appreciated and thank you in advance!

After upgrading systems to Office 2021 LTSC x64, we have one legacy app (looking up historical records) that complains about Microsoft.Ace.OLEDB.12.0 provider not being registered. If I run the below in PowerShell x64, it shows Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0 and Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.16.0 as an available provider, but under PowerShell x86, neither are listed. Expected since Office x64 is installed.

(New-Object system.data.oledb.oledbenumerator).GetElements() | select SOURCES_NAME, SOURCES_DESCRIPTION

Can't install Access Database Engine x86 since Office x64 is installed. Not aware of any way to reconfigure vendors old legacy app to support x64. Any way to configure x64 provider to register as x86 as well to allow the app to continue to work with legacy app?

Is there much of a case for keeping standalone Office 2016 licenses or should most schools think about moving to Microsoft 365, so they can always have the current version of the Office suite?

I find it a real nuisance that Outlook 2016's Autodiscover doesn't work with Exchange Online! Several of our users are having to use Webmail when they'd rather use Outlook.

Before I figure out the workaround to get Outlook 2016 to work, would it actually just make more sense to get Microsoft 365 instead?

I thought educational institutions would get major discounts and that upgrading to the latest and greatest would be a no-brainer.

Microsoft Office 2016 is really slow on my dad's PC. There's a delay when right clicking in Word, Excel and Powerpoint. Word, Excel and Powerpoint windows are choppy when you move them around. And sometimes they would just freeze and not responding, the solution for that we usually close the Office programs that has problem and re-open them. (for example if Word freezes, we close all Word files and re-open them)

I don't notice this behavior on other programs.

PC Specs:

• Windows 10 OS
• i7 4790K (Temps are good, I have Deepcool GAMMAXX 400S)
• 8GBx2 1866MHz 1600MHz DDR3 Memory
• Asus Z97-A Motherboard
• Intel 660p SSD 512GB

The task manager during that streamable video was:

• 75% Memory Usage (11.7/15.7GB), with Google Chrome taking the most RAM (2470 MB) everything else is <300 MB
• <10% CPU Usage

Detailed memory usage (from performance tab):

• In use: 11.6 GB (2.1 GB Compressed)
• Available: 4.0 GB
• Committed: 35.4/41.1 GB
• Cached: 4.0 GB
• Paged pool: 1.2 GB
• Non-paged pool: 699 MB
• Hardware reserved: 319 MB

My dad has 92 tabs open in Chrome, 4 Powerpoint, 5 Word, 5 Excel, 17 pdfs tab in Adobe Acrobat Reader and 3 trading platform programs.

He does have that many tabs open because he needs them. I think bookmark can solve that problem but his bookmark is full, maybe hundreds of bookmarks that I doubt he still uses. I will try to help him next week when hes free, maybe we can clean up the bookmarks and tabs.

So what I'm thinking is just getting 8GBx2 1600MHz and plug it in

I couldn't find the same 1866MHz RAM here, but there's local RAM brand that still makes 8 GB 1600MHz DDR3 memory. (theres a lot sketchy ones claiming to be Kingston HyperX brands, but I won't be touching that because they have no warranty)

We just suddenly started having this issue where Office 2016 (particularly Excel) can't save or overwritten files to/in a few specific folders on our SMB share.

Issue Overview
- In Excel, you go to Save As, browse to one of the affected folders on the SMB share (you have read/write rights), and choose to save the file there (both new files and also overwriting current ones).

Where it happens
This issue occurs on ALL of our Windows Server VMs (ranging from 2008 to 2019), but NONE of our end-user workstations.

Things I've tried

• Checking Group Policy for any GPOs being applied to servers that could be causing the issue (nothing found).
• Disabling Controlled Folder Access
• Restarting the file server hosting the SMB share.
• Checking for handles/open files on the file server (none).

It almost seems like it's an issue with Office and not our file server because a restart doesn't fix it and it's consistent across all the servers.
This issue is so bizarre and causing me a lot of stress, I can't figure it out and can't find help anywhere.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated!
