Meta question: why do so many questions here have a β€˜role play’ element?

I’ve noticed that there are a large number of questions asked on this subreddit that start with a β€˜role play’ premise, e.g. β€˜I am a farmer in C18th rural Virginia’. Is there a reason for this?

I have never come across historical questions being framed in this way before joining this subreddit, but see it all the time here. I’m in the UK and wonder if it’s a common way of asking questions in the US or elsewhere?

Edit: for anyone who frames questions in this way, I just want to make it clear that there is no criticism behind this question, so please accept my apologies if it came across in that way.

What's your favorite element regardless of meta?

I've always liked the lightning element in media. Animations are just so cool. In Genshin, Electro animations are also top tier.

For example, I noticed that almost all Electro characters have a special animation detail where in there surroundings go dark (ex. Raiden ult, Razor hold E, Keqing ult ending, Beidou perfect counter, etc)

So what's your favorite element?

Meta elements in stories can come off as inseucre

I fucking hate it when a story gets too meta about it's relationship with the audience. It comes off as so insecure. Here are my two non controversial examples, Rick and Morty and the new Matrix

MATRIX RESURRECTION SPOILERS AHEAD

Rick and Morty spends so much of it's later seasons going "H-haha audience we know what you want and we're gonna give it to you. Or not. Either way please know that the writer knows and the character knows". It comes off as so insecure, just write your fuckin story, play it straight and let me decide whether I like it or not. And ocassionally it comes off as hostile when they do plots and gotta do these meta jabs at the audience for "forcing" them to do or address plot beats like Rick's backstory or Evil Morty. Sorry for wanting you to follow up on the story hooks you set up and sorry for getting invested in parts of the story you didn't want us to I guess? But either do them or don't just stop whining in story about them either way

Same thing with the entire first half of the new Matrix story. Fuck off Morpheus. "Blah blah blah you already know the stuff we're showing you now". Ok why are you showing us this then? "Alright Neo are you gonna stay in prison or are you gonna advance the plot?" fucking I don't know but can you take this even a little bit seriously Morpheus? Or the extended "Do we need another Matrix" bit? I don't know if we needed the new Matrix or not but maybe you should decide before I dedicate 2 and a half hours of my life to this film? And you know what if it's this painful to make this movie, just don't. But you did and you took the money so shut the fuck up, I put this movie on to see Matrix, show me the fucking Matrix ok?

Meta elements can be fine. They made the new Spiderman pretty good and they are the core of games like Undertale/Deltarune and Doki Doki Literature Club. I like them when used properly. Maybe this is a hot take but using this to piss and moan at the audience maybe isn't the best use of them

Mihoyo is Pushing a New Meta (Not just mono element!)

Yunjin is the glue that will make Normal Atk teams break into the meta.

Enough with trying to fit every new character into a variant of National or Morgana. We need more diversity in our team comps and I believe Mihoyo is trying to help us make teams that are LOWER dps than the abomination that is Morgana and National while being just ENOUGH to clear 36 star abyss.

Mono Element teams are just one part of that equation. I believe Normal Atk teams are their real goal however.

Razor, Childe, Kokomi, Noelle, Itto, Aloy, Yoimiya, and Eula are all characters that all rely on their Normal Attacks more than any other character for their kit. I'll consider them as a "Normal Atk Carry" for now, though some are flexible as supports.

We also have "Normal Atk Supports", which support a character through an ability associated with their normal atk. Barbara, Qiqi, Jean, Kokomi, Noelle all activate their support abilities by normal attacking.

And finally we have "Normal Atk Amplifiers". I'm not talking about characters who buff normal atk damage, but rather those who activate their own abilities when another character performs a normal atk (amplifier sounds cooler than subdps lmao).

So Xinqiu, Raiden, Thoma, Fischl (C6), and Beidou make up this category.

As you can see, there is a lot of setup for a Normal Atk team.

Examples:

Razor/Xinqiu/Qiqi/Yunjin: Super Electro-Charged Team. Xinqiu's burst along with Razor will produce electro charged status, which will react with Qiqi's elemental skill for a double reaction of Superconduct & Frozen. Razor will then shatter (with dmg boosted by superconduct res shred). And his normal attacks are boosted by Yunjin's ult. If qiqi ever needs to be on field to heal then her attacks will be boosted by Yunjin as well.

Razor/Shenhe/Yunjin/Diona: Premium Superconduct team. Shenhe is able to buff normal attacks with her E and also provides quills that can be procced by her and Diona. Yunjin still buffs razor's normal attacks while Diona acts as a battery for Shenhe.

Noelle/Xinqiu/Yunjin/Fischl: Crystallized ElectroCharged team. Amazing potential as Yunjin could possibly battery for Noelle with a favonius lance. Fischl c6 and Oz will trigger electro charged with Xinqiu's ultimate, which will then double react with Noelle Ultimate normal attacks for double crystallize and Oz passive retribution damage. Noelle also acts as both shielder and team healer.

Childe/Fischl/Yunjin/Sayu: Rainbow Swirl team. Maximizes the normal

My damage against Undertale's meta elements

There's a lot of games that go for meta. Meta on the nature of games themselves, using the fact that the game is a game as a narrative tool, etc. I am not a fan of most that try to go for this for one simple reason: It's so easy to just be lazy with meta.

Sure, there's games like the platformer game whose name escapes me where you do everything backwards and the occasional joke is harmless and in many cases entertaining. What irks me are games that do their meta halfheartedly. For this example, I'm going to be looking at Undertale.

Undertale is a game I enjoy a lot. It's quirky, got some really good writing, and all around an enjoyable romp. This does not apply for the meta parts of Undertale in my opinion. The meta stuff serves little to no purpose in the narrative outside of the stuff with Chara and Flowey which I feel throws a wrench into the storyline they have in the proper game.

I like Flowey as a tragic, evil character when he isn't trying to guilt trip the player about stuff since the game does that plenty fine by itself when it needs to. I honestly hate the fact Chara "takes over" in the Genocide route and wipes your save file. To me, it just feels like the game needed a way to end the game and the devs couldn't think of anything else. In terms of guilt, the phone calls from Sans in the worse Neutral endings are far more effective than anything either character does.

I honestly wish the post-Genocide save wipe was permanent. It'd genuinely be a meta thing that I think is really cool. You, the player, wiped out the world. You cannot fix what you broke. You have to live with it now. But naaaaah you can just put it back with minimal consequences aside from Flowey nagging at you which I already think is the worst part of his character, and Chara's adjustment of the True Pacifist ending which at the very least I think is kinda interesting.

At the end of the day, though, my main issue with Undertale's "groundbreaking meta narrative" is that the meta part of it feels very unimportant compared to the rest of the game. The fact that you have to break your innate gamer habits for the true ending is something I think is a clever concept, I do like this idea a lot. I just wish Undertale committed more in its narrative or committed LESS in its narrative. It stands in a very strange uncanny valley of meta as is.

In my opinion, video game metas are best when the entire game leans into that. OneShot is a master class in video game meta as a narrati

[META] Spoilers for datamined information are running rampant in /r/DestinyLore at the same time Destiny's in-game storytelling is improving. I propose that this sub bans discussion of leaked story elements.

There was a huge datamine at the launch of Season of the Splicer that revealed the entire storyline. I've been dodging like a gymnast trying to avoid spoilers, but it hasn't worked. I've learned everything that is going to happen, including the details of leaked cutscenes, through off-hand mentions and blunt summaries. Spoilers are removed by the mods, but people drop them so casually and frequently that they still litter the sub.

At the same time this is happening, Destiny's in-game presentation has been improving in leaps and bounds. Season of the Chosen built up the armistice over half the season, through Battlegrounds dialogue, weekly quests, cutscenes both animated and in-engine, and the traditional lorebooks. And Season of the Splicer has already topped that in just it's first week. The story of Destiny is no longer a series of lore snippets buried five layers deep in the triumphs menu, it is something we experience organically over the course of a season just by playing the game.

Bungie has put a lot of effort turning Destiny's abysmal story around, and I want to experience it the way they intended, not through clipped bullet points in a summary post a year in advance. Because yeah, there was also a massive leak of plot details for Witch Queen, and I don't want to have to swear off this sub for the next six months because people are discussing the fall expansion like it's common knowledge.

Now, this sub already has Rule 6: no spoilers for unreleased content. But it doesn't work in practice for three reasons. The first is that people use it inconsistently; I'll see Spoiler posts that only contain speculation or details from a recent release right besides ones that give away Witch Queen. When you click a spoiler post, you don't know what you'll get. This is especially bad on Tuesdays, when people want to discuss the latest developments but every Spoiler post is a big gamble.

The second is that leaks have become so normalized that people don't even think twice before posting them in comments, and the mods cannot possibly keep up with them all. We need a cultural shift that I don't think any amount of moderation could achieve, no matter how diligent. Thirdly, even posts that comply with the sub's rules give things away. When a leak drops and every post on /r/DestinyLore's frontpage is a Spoiler post with the same character's name in the title, that says everything there is to say.

I think the mods should consider an outright ban on any leaked or da

Nifty Or Thrifty: Element Cup (PvP Budget/Meta Analysis

The "Nifty Or Thrifty" article series takes a comprehensive look at the meta for PvP Cup formats: Element Cup, in this case. NoT covers not only the top meta picks, but also some mons where you can save some dust with cheaper second move unlock costs or less powering up. Because for those on a stardust budgetβ€”and/or folks trying to save up some dust for the futureβ€”it can be daunting trying to figure out where to spend it. We all want to field competitive teams, but where can we get the best bang for our buck?

I will start with those with the cheapest second move unlock cost and steam ahead until we finally arrive at the most expensive (75,000 dust in this case, since no Legendaries or Mythicals are eligible) I am going to try to be comprehensive with this, but can't go into detail on everything I want to... it's a massive meta and Reddit only allows me 40,000 characters. 😬 To that end, I will also only be highlighting Shadow versions when they're particularly relevant... many are worse, and that's what you can infer if I don't talk about them. I also want to highlight Pokémon that can be evolved after Element Cup is over and their evolution still fit in Great League, but with characters limited, I will use the ⏫ symbol by their name to indicate that. Cool? Cool.

And one more thing before we get into the standard order of things. There is one particular PokΓ©mon I need to highlight, as its importance cannot be understated. It is THE central figure of this meta in a way we haven't seen since Aerodactyl was absolutely everywhere in Flying Cup. And ironically, it's a Flyer too!

DUCKLETT ⏫

Wing Attack | Brave Bird & Bubble Beam/Aerial Ace

So let's just get the apocalyptic numbers out of the way from the get-go... but then walk it back a bit. Yes, Ducklett is good in this meta. REALLY good. But it's not quite as bad as that shows. Firstly, those are the numbers with Bubble Beam consistently succeeding in baiting a shield from the opponent and then closing out with a big fat Brave Bird in nearly every case, and there are hardly any PokΓ©mon in this meta and at this level (below 500 CP, where anything with over 100 HP is quite rare) that can survive eating a Brave Bird. If everything goes perfectly to plan, yes, Ducklett is capable of that kind of crazy good performance. But should everything NOT go perfectly for Ducklettβ€”if tho

Embarking on a season long campaign with lore-crafting and meta-game elements

Over the last day, my group of six players has been drafting factions for a series of games. One player is in charge of lore crafting, another in charge of video production, and I'm currently directing the meta-game elements.

The goal is to develop a running drama to our games and add our own version of legacy elements while not substantially disrupting the intrinsic balance of the game.

  • We will play six regular season games and one championship game with bonus points available.
  • Season score is determined by total victory points scored, not wins.
  • Each player drafts three factions in serpentine order, and the first game allows players to choose their initial faction from their pool, in draft order.
  • The winner of each game has
    • the option to replay the same faction or choose another faction from their pool in the next game,
    • the option to swap a faction with one from the bench, and
    • the right to pick their faction after other players have revealed theirs...
  • ...while the losing players
    • render their losing faction ineligible for the next game (The losing faction's society experiences a simulated recession from challenging the throne and failing.) and
    • have to randomly choose the next faction from their pool to be played
  • Eliminating a player in-game removes that faction from their faction pool. The player responsible for the elimination can draft the defeated faction into their pool (or draft another faction from the bench).
  • Factions not used in the current game are transactable game components during the game. Out-of-game transactions of factions are not allowed, though non-binding meta agreements can be made to be exchanged at the earliest opportunity for a legal transaction.
  • We have a provision so that players never have less than two eligible factions in their pool, but that condition may see them saddled with a less desirable faction; the reigning winner chooses the faction added to their pool (the Power Vacuum rule).
  • The championship round will be played with an asymmetrical variant, like Right to Rule, with the points leader occupying Rex. The first three places in that game will score bonus season points.

We have other errata to handle unusual conditions, so if you see a hole, we probably have it filed.

The only meta element of Scream that hasn't been explored is parody movies. The Scary Movie series directly parodied Scream... how awesome would it be if Scream (2020) showed that the "Stab" movies were now so mocked that there was a more successful parody series... "Slash"?!

Scream 4 hinted at the Stab movies almost becoming a parody of themselves with the "time travel" element of Stab 5: Clock of Doom. But the actual Scream series has never really acknowledged the Scary Movie series that became just as successful. I think that would be a great touch in Scream (2020)... it'd be an explicit, self-referential acknowledgement that even the Scream series is now somewhat old-school and open to parody.

Taking on the Element Cup Meta with an all Water team

Video: https://youtu.be/H5n9QJ1UJkw

I'm a fairly new player who got to rank 20 fairly early in Great League but then purposely tanked in Ultra League as I was lacking the resources to build a competitive meta team and needed the rare candies.

However I've had a lot of fun and some decent runs in the Element Cup, reaching ace successfully the other day with a fairly spicy team, which I went 5-0, 4-1, 4-1, 5-0 and 5-0 with yesterday, and which I've seen nobody else using.

I designed this as basically an anti-Chinchou water team, as my previous team with Slowpoke was getting absolutely flattened by Chinchous, but this team destroys Cottonee, Chinchou, Ducklett line ups.

Team is Tentacool (Poison Sting, Wrap), Wooper (Mud Shot, Body Slam) and Ducklett (Aerial Ace and Bubblebeam/Brave Bird)

It's basically designed to limit weaknesses as much as possible with dual types, and the tactics are to go for fast damage with energy generating fast attacks and quick charge neutral attacks, while maintaining switch advantage at all costs (even if you burn through both shields) in order to make sure you counter your opponents second PokΓ©mon.

I start with Tentacool first in order to tempt out Chinchou then immediately switch to Wooper to deal with it. Tentacool is surprisingly bulky and really quick to charge- against Cottonee I have reached up to five charge attacks. It can deal with both Ducklett and Cottonee really easily, and even against a Chinchou lead it does okay with shields. Vulpix is also no problem for this team to deal with, and Slowpoke can be handled as long as you have shields. Fire PokΓ©mon are obviously no problem, and Ducklett can deal with most grass PokΓ©mon.

The team does struggle once you get around 2100... Bulky teams with Seel and Slowpoke are a problem, and Chikorita leads with vine whip (?) and body slam are a nightmare as they seem to be the only PokΓ©mon which can beat Tentacool to a charge move, which means switch advantage is lost even with both shields. Once switch advantage is lost Wooper or Ducklett can become sitting ducks (pardon the pun) However if you have a Chinchou or Cottonee problem, it's a really good solution and one which the opponent probably doesn't expect.
