A list of lesser known North-American cryptids?

This might not be the right place to ask, but I’m writing an anthology of short stories about North American cryptids and folklore. So far I’ve written the first story about the Ogopogo, and I plan on the next maybe being the flatwoods monster. I am just having trouble since I don’t want to end up writing about Bigfoot or chupacabra, yet I want to write a ton of these stories. What cryptids do you guys think deserve their β€œtime in the limelight” so to speak? Also, if there are any subreddits I could go to for help with popular folklore creature ideas, that’d be helpful too.

I’ll post a list of ideas I’ve had already in the comments.

Edit: wow I didn’t expect this many responses. I’ve been thinking and decided maybe I should open up this project to this subreddit. I want as many stories as possible but I know I can’t make all these happen. If you want to contribute with your own short stories, then direct message me or something.

A cryptid hunter visited my village to kill the long-legged beast of the Magura Forest. I am lucky I walked away alive. (FINALE)

The village pub was no place for a woman. Yes, our wives and daughters would occasionally cross the threshold of our sanctuary to drag us back to our duties, but none of them ever sat down for a drink. There were no written rules but there was an understanding: The pub was under the dominion of the village men.

It is because of this unwritten rule that we stared at her. The sword she had sheathed across her back only intensified our curiosity.

She rode in shortly after sunset, her boots heavy with snow and her step filled with purpose. Without looking at our table she sat down at the bar and ordered a shot of pΓ‘lenka.

The barkeep laughed and offered her a soda, but his demeanor quickly changed. She might have given him a look that the rest of us were not privy to, but most likely the barkeep simply noticed the hilt of her sword. Without a second word he poured her the liquor.

In one fell swoop she swallowed the shot and then asked for another.

At first we all sat there, wordless, studying the stranger who had entered our secluded slice of civilization, but soon enough Halčín, the portly general store owner, verbalized our communal curiosity.

β€˜Young miss!’ he said, leaning forward in his chair, β€˜May I inquire what brings you to our humble village? As far as I know there are no medieval fairs planned for the near future, there is no need for swords in this part of the country.’

His joke released some of the invisible tension that had festered in the pub, but when the woman turned around the laughter ceased. β€˜The tall-legged beast,’ she said, her eyes as piercing as the mountain wind.

β€˜I have no idea what you speak of,’ Halčín said, doing a poor job at masking his discomfort, β€˜Has anyone here heard about this tall-legged beast?’

The men shook their heads, but their eyes told a different story. We all knew what she was talking about.

A week prior the woodsman had stumbled into the pub, telling frantic stories of a long-legged beast. It attacked him and his dog in the forest. They both survived the horror, but there was something wrong with them. Within a fortnight the dog was dead. Within a week the woodsman was dead as well.

β€˜Pray tell, young miss,’ Halčín said, trying to steady his voice, β€˜Who told you these tales of this supposed tall-legged beast? Are you sure you didn’t simply hear an exaggerated story of the bear attack our village experienced a while back?’

β€˜The stories I have heard were not of a bear attack. The stories I have heard were

Soo... I've never heard of any specific cryptid that fits this description. It, by all accounts, looked like a half rotten deer. It was less than 30 yards from my house... Any ideas? Didn't know there was a crypto zoology page here until today, I posted this originally in some random comments thread

Ugh. Everyone here is going to think I'm crazy, but I'm writing this anyway. This is not some attempt at creative writing. This shit actually happened, and I'm still trying to make sense of it.

It was the first weekend of May this year. It was my parent's wedding anniversary, so I was home alone with a friend of mine. Everything was normal. We were watching TV, and out of the corner of my eye I saw something odd out of the living room picture window maybe 15 feet from the edge of my house. In profile, it was clearly a white tailed deer. A young buck in velvet, one fork on the left side and a broken fork on the right. 3 points.

The part that struck me was that it didn't have a face. As in, the skin and flesh was hanging off it's muzzle in front of its eyes. The nasal passages of the skull were clearly visible and the Jaws were almost entirely denuded of flesh, tendons and some degraded muscle visible.

I assumed it was just a diseased deer. Uncommon but not unheard of. I called my friend over to the window to look. He said he thought it was cool, and then he accidentally tapped the window with his coke can. The deer turned in a snap second and stared right at us. It was then I felt what can only be described as an aura of fear and malice. It was an odd experience, almost as if I could feel rage not my own along with a sense of primal fear. As I'm trying to reconcile my odd emotional state, I notice my friend trembling. Full on Parkinson's shakes. He screams unintelligibly. I back hand him. He shuts up, and in a shaky voice asks me "What the fuck is that? What was that? What the hell, man?" I look to him, then back to the deer.

I decided to shoo it away, rationalizing that it's just a diseased animal and that I couldn't just shoot it on account that it was like 2am and all I knew what to find was a 12 gauge shotgun. Waking neighbors with a gunshot was not a good move.

I opened the door and walked out to the porch, shaking off the odd feelings and my friend calling me insane for going near it. I reason that I'm a strong man and it's a small deer, I outweigh it by almost twice at least and have the strength to back it up. Even if it charged me I'd be fine, I'd delt with worse before. So I yell at it to leave, it just stares at me. So I briskly walk down the steps towards it, still yelling. As soon as my shoe hits grass a d I start walking towards it, it advances toward me at the same pace. I decided that I'd just grab it or kick it or it came down to it, s

Of Monster and Myth: a game idea that I have involving cryptids and mythological creatures of North and central america

First of all, I am not a game developer, so don't expect this to ever be a real game, this is just for fun.

Here is the basic idea. It takes place in america in an unknown time period, no modern technology, but still cities similar to the 1920's but beyond the coastal cites there are only small towns similar in style to the old western towns. Native Americans still are spread across most of the "Middlelands" as they are called.

Your character would sign up for the Monster Hunters Guild and would become a bounty hunter for all sorts of strange creatures. In this universe cryptids and monsters are hard fact, no matter how absurd they may sound to us, or even if we know that they are hoaxes in our world. You would then travel around the United States to hunt these creatures and sell parts of them for cash, or someone who knows how to make items from them. You would also get jobs from people to kill a certain creature for them.

After the base game there would be 2 expansion packs. This includes the Northern Front, which takes place in Canada and Alaska, and the Caribbean Voyage expansion, which takes place in the Caribbean sea and the shores of Mexico.

Here is the full creature list: https://docs.google.com/document/d/162U94inhcvUud3zWjbjPEKsQnEl_xj5yYqKk8kgamYY/edit?usp=sharing

It includes many famous North American cryptids and many lumberjack creatures known as "Fearsome Critters"

Hope you enjoy this idea :)

EPISODE RELEASE DAY!

*cue Pee-Wee Herman screaming gif*

If you like cryptids and smart-ass, alcoholic recluses resisting the siren call of society, then this one's for you.

Peep the description as follows:

>Jonas is a recluse. He lives in the mountains alone, appreciative of the peace and solitude the wilderness has to offer. It also enables him to keep his unusual line of work a secret.
>
>At the behest of mysterious employers, Jonas has been instructed to wear a fur-covered suit and terrorize hikers at a local mountain range, all in an effort to maintain the mythical legend of Bigfoot. While typically uneventful, there are times when a hiker gets too close and the situation becomes...messy. Jonas may not be bloodthirsty, but he always does what's necessary to uphold a certain level of discretion.
>
>After several high-profile β€˜accidents’ are written off by authorities as bear attacks, tabloid reporter Shirley Codwell notices a pattern and sets out to unravel the truth. Convinced that the killings are the work of a legendary beast, she calls upon the monster hunting community for assistance. The events that transpire are like nothing she could have expected...and will send Jonas running for his life.

You can access Spotify, Apple Podcats, Stitcher, and any other of your preferred streaming platforms via the Anchor link below.

We'd love any feedback you might have to offer, good or bad! Shoot us a message on the boards below and let us know what you think!
