A list of puns related to "Linguistic insecurity"
Nothing less, nothing more.
First off this is a throw away account since my bf know my reddit handle. My boyfriend and I have been dating for 3 years. Heβs from Colombia, andΒ Iβm Mexican American, mixed white anglo/latina, and I grew up mostly speaking English at home. Lately my boyfriend has been veryΒ critical of my Spanish, and it makes me feel like crap. Iβm super white looking and in middle schoolΒ IΒ was bullied by other kids for being too white & not speaking good enough Spanish and I still have a lot of insecurities about not being βlatinaβ enough. Iβve already told him all this, but he still corrects me.
Heβll often correct me mid-sentence, this makes me feel bad and has even led to me crying at times, but he insists that heβs trying to help me improve my Spanish. He studied linguistics so his English is very good, but I still don't correct him if he mispronounces something. I grew up around people who spoke English as a second language, so βSpanglishβ mistakes donβt even register for me.
There are two things going on here with the way I talk. One is that Spanish is my second language and I do sometimes say things wrong. But the other thing is that I use a lot of uniquely Mexican and Chicano words and phrases, which he may not know or will consider βincorrectβ. Heβll often say,Β βWell outside of Mexico no one will understand you if you say that.β or tease me when I use "Mexicanβ words.Β For example, sometimes I say βpor nadaβ instead of βde nadaβ (both mean thank you) and he always makes fun of me for speaking "incorrectly", even though "por nada" is very common where I grew up.
Itβs gotten to the point where I donβt even talk to him in Spanish at all anymore. I thought dating a Colombian would help me feel more connected to my latina side, but itβs just made me feel more alienated than ever. How can I make him understand how that my cultural background and Spanish skills are a sensitive topic for me? Has anyone else faced issues like this when dating someone from a different latino culture?
We all remember how Tony reacted when he saw that a half-bIack Jewish guy who dated his daughter. His name is Noah and Tony revealed his racisβοΈ and hate-filled mentality to the fullest but got knocked-out by Uncle Ben immediately after Noah and Meadow left the house. Three seasons later AJ dated the Dominican/Puerto Rican woman Blanca who had a kid, was much older and even more bIack/darker than that heavy light-skinned dude Noah. Somehow Blanca was quickly integrated by the Sopranos. Her kid played often in their house, she was invited to several dinners and the overall chemistry between Blanca and Tony/Carmela looked pretty healthy. Only in the beginning Carmela (who was kind of supportive when Meadow dated Noah) surprisingly expressed Tony her little concerns when she saw AJ's girlfriend for the first time: Her "arguments" were she's Puerto Rican/Dominican, she's too old bla bla bla but Tony seemed to be very chilled and didn't really care. He just responded to Carmela "at least she's catholic" (shrug off*) and they never talked about that topic again.
Tony is a textbook "old-school" racisβοΈ so this fact obviously plays a huge role in Tony's behavior but my question is why his reactions in both cases were so different? Here are some possible reasons.
Because of misogynisβοΈic reasons? His son can date and marry everyone he wants but his older daughter is only allowed to date/marry a whiβοΈe Italian or at least a Cau.casian man in general. That would fit the the overprotective dad trope when it's about the daughter. It was clear to see that Meadow is kind of daddy's girl and basically the only one who he would never hit, push or even grab. Therefore Tony barely gives a fuck about AJ's dating life although he was clearly more labile and sensitive while he went on full KKK mode against Noah although he was the complete opposite of the stereotype bIack man that lives in Tony's head.
Because just anti-bIack reasons? Although around 70% of the populations of the Dominican Republic have Afr.ican origins (27% in Puerto Rico) Blanca would be first labeled as a "brown Latina" despite her Af.rican heritage. So for Tony her national background is acceptable because Puerto Rico/Dominican Republic are Caribbean countries/islands while Noah as an "Afr.ican American" will linguistically always be more related to bIack Af.rica and Tony racisβοΈ slurs and behavior against Af.rican Americans are harder and happens more often than against any other race. I mean l
... keep reading on reddit β‘I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
Since I spent most of my childhood alone and ignored I spent a lot of time reading. When I read I often came across new words, new places, new idioms, and new synonyms to other words I already knew. But since I never had anyone to talk to I never learned how to correctly pronounce them.
As a kid, when I was brave enough to use a new word Iβd be ridiculed for trying to be βtoo smartβ or ridiculed for my pronunciation. It forced me to intentionally limit the words I used and to avoid a word if I wasnβt 100% sure about the pronunciation.
Now I find myself doing the same thing. I avoid words that have multiple pronunciations or any words that seem βbigβ.
I donβt even try sometimes, I just assume my pronunciation is wrong. Other times I refer to things as βthat thingyβ or something similar to avoid the word.
Worse, I find myself treating others the way my parents treated me and if they use the proper term for something Iβll wave it away and say βoh whatever, you know what Iβm talking aboutβ.
Can anyone relate? In some instances itβs called linguistic insecurity, but Iβve never seen it directly related to trauma.
PS - this is a great community and I feel less alone now that I found you. Thanks yβall.

Alot of great jokes get posted here! However just because you have a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke.
THIS IS NOT ABOUT NSFW, THIS IS ABOUT LONG JOKES, BLONDE JOKES, SEXUAL JOKES, KNOCK KNOCK JOKES, POLITICAL JOKES, ETC BEING POSTED IN A DAD JOKE SUB
Try telling these sexual jokes that get posted here, to your kid and see how your spouse likes it.. if that goes well, Try telling one of your friends kid about your sex life being like Coca cola, first it was normal, than light and now zero , and see if the parents are OK with you telling their kid the "dad joke"
I'm not even referencing the NSFW, I'm saying Dad jokes are corny, and sometimes painful, not sexual
So check out r/jokes for all types of jokes

Ants donβt even have the concept fathers, let alone a good dad joke. Keep r/ants out of my r/dadjokes.
But no, seriously. I understand rule 7 is great to have intelligent discussion, but sometimes it feels like 1 in 10 posts here is someone getting upset about the jokes on this sub. Let the mods deal with it, they regulate the sub.

[1] Drama over facts
The main focus of the storyline that Borba's "Trilogy of Life" portrays would be the fact that BJudy had an abortion and somehow stated that she was the "first rabbit" to do so.
However, if you were to get the facts about her ability to have the hybrid baby, the history of abortion, and pred/prey relations, you'd see why she was not only capable of carrying the baby despite Borba's vehement arguments against it, but also why she couldn't be the first rabbit to have an abortion.
Borba stated that BJudy wouldn't be able to carry the baby to term due to Judy's size and weight:
https://www.deviantart.com/comments/1/877101728/4938027039
Nick, on his application, states that he's 4' and 80lbs. Red foxes generally weigh about 30lbs.
So taking this into account, even if you were to say that Nick would be about 2.6 times the normal weight of his species and apply the same for Judy (European rabbits are about 5lbs), that would make her about 13lbs.
However, she's taller than Otterton with a shorter (scut) tail, but longer ears. So there's no way that she weighs 13lbs.
Here's the closest estimation of Judy's size and weight:
https://www.reddit.com/r/zootopia/comments/5d1bbi/estimating_judys_weight/
So it's about 36 to 80. Judy would be close to half his weight in this estimation, and close to half his height in renderings.
Keep that in mind and you'll see why the argument collapses in on itself in IWS upon further inspection.
In IWS, you'd see that other couples with vastly disproportionate weights were able to have children of their own as seen on page 10 of I Will Survive.
The ones with the most notably disproportionate weight would be the Bull Moose and Doe, and the vixen and what appears to be a Timber Wolf:
https://e926.net/posts/1192490
For those of you that don't know, e926 is the safe version of its counterpart.
As stated above, the weight of the average red fox is about 30lbs, but as this would be stretched for Zootopia counterparts, the female would be about 64 or so (female red foxes weigh about 20% less than males), with the timberwolf being about 60-110 lbs.
The wolf in this picture is much taller and much heavier than his mate. So it would be at the higher end of the scale, but still close to half the height and weight for the co

Heard they've been doing some shady business.
We've all seen it. Plastered on Sailor moon glittery gifs, caps locked on twitter, written in Sharpie on posterboard at protests. Trans women are women and trans men are men. Let's break this down a bit, shall we?
The phrase itself is a contradiction. Semantically, there is one specific thing being proclaimed as the exact same as another, seemingly broader thing. In other contexts, it could be shortened as "AB is A and AC is C." When in truth, a more accurate statement would literally be: "AB is AB and AC is AC." Or even "AB is a set of A and AC is a set of C."
This is a concept of mathematics and linguistics, and is often the first argument shut down when presented. It often goes like this:
Person 1: "Trans women are women and trans men are men!"
Person 2: "Well, actually trans women are a type of woman. And trans men are a type of men."
Person 1: "Differentiating the two is transphobic and you should treat them the same."
So there we can see emotional reasoning eclipsing logical reasoning. Saying trans people are a subset of a larger group of people is true, yet the idea of being "othered" or "minimized" threatens the validity of their identities, and is thus branded transphobic regardless of accuracy. If truth is transphobic... well damn.
Another problem with the phrase is emotional on my part as a detrans person. From my perspective, it seems clear that the frequency of this phrase being beat down into people's throats was a clear method of affirmation.
"Reblog if you believe trans women are women and trans men are men. Block me if you disagree."
"Trans women are women and trans men are men. Sorry sweaty I don't make the rules."
And on and on. Over and over. Every social media sphere, flooded with various different ways of conveying this idea, almost as if everyone knew they didn't really believe it, but if they repeated it enough times, it would become truth.
