Rutherford County's juvenile court judge is no longer an adjunct instructor at MTSU

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 38%. (I'm a bot)

> Judge Donna Scott Davenport, who oversees Rutherford County's juvenile court system, will no longer teach at Middle Tennessee State University, according to an email sent to faculty and staff Tuesday evening.

> More: Here's the viral thread examining Rutherford County's juvenile justice system by WPLN News and ProPublica.

> Davenport has been the juvenile court judge for two decades and has taught criminal justice at MTSU as an adjunct instructor for many years.

> It said that Davenport, "Whose actions overseeing Rutherford County Juvenile Court have recently drawn attention in national media reports, is no longer affiliated with the University."

> The county spokesperson did share a statement from Rutherford County Mayor Bill Ketron: "I share our community's concerns over a news story that was recently released involving Rutherford County's juvenile justice system. This is the subject of an ongoing lawsuit in federal court and the County is very limited in what can be discussed. With that said, changes to the system were put in place in 2017 to ensure that the County is strictly following required federal and state laws regarding arresting and detaining of juveniles."

> In the days after ProPublica's investigation of the juvenile justice system in Rutherford County, Tennessee, one state lawmaker wrote that she was "Horrified." Another called it a "Nightmare." A third labeled it "Unchecked barbarism." A former Tennessee congressman posted the story about the unlawful jailing of kids and tweeted, "The most sickening and unAmerican thing I've read about in some time." The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund called for a federal civil rights investigation.

Juvenile Instructor 1882 "yet no one was converted to the truth, for signs had failed to make them believe..."

Many deaths have occurred within the last few years among the veteran members of our Church. Numbers of persons have recently passed away who were connected with the Church during the early years of its existence, and whose lives were filled with scenes and incidents of the most interesting nature. Their wonderful experience so far as known is appreciated by their intimate friends, in whose memories it is embalmed, but it will hereafter only be known as tradition, for, as a rule, they have left no written testimony or record of their lives to show to future generations what they have seen or passed through. We have scarcely ever heard of the death of such a person without a feeling of regret that the important scenes of which he was a witness while living were not better known, and that a definite and accurate account of them had not been written before his death.

A short time since we conceived the idea of publishing a volume of the "Faith-Promoting Series," entitled EARLY SCENES IN CHURCH HISTORY, to be made up of such incidents of appropriate nature as we could obtain from early members of the Church.

Of course we were aware that a single volume of the size contemplated could not describe a tithe of the interesting scenes of a faith-promoting nature with which the early history of the Church abounded, but not until we had started the compilation did we realize to the full extent the vastness of the field which we had entered upon. We gathered the incidents contained in the present volume at random (mostly from verbal narratives), compiled them very hastily, with too little regard perhaps for variety, and feel that we have hardly made a commencement at recounting the early scenes of which a record should be perpetuated.

In compiling this volume no effort has been made at selecting scenes of a marvelous or sensational character; the aim has rather been to mention such incidents as would tend to show how the power of God was manifested in behalf of the Saints in those early days, and thereby promote faith among the young, for whose benefit this Series is published. Nor is it to be supposed that such scenes as are herein described have been confined to any particular period of our Church's history. As wonderful incidents of special providence could be related of the present age as of that which is past. The power of God is as manifest now in shaping the destiny of His Saints, in preserving their lives and in a

Racism in the Juvenile Instructor, a magazine that was privately published by George Q. Cannon an apostle of the church

I was reading through MormonThink's blacks and the priesthood section and they referenced this magazine: https://archive.org/details/juvenileinstruct320geor/page/156/mode/2up

Here are some longer excerpts from it, the racism is astonishing:

>Some, however, will argue that a black skin is not a curse, nor a white skin a blessing. In fact, some have been so foolish as to believe and say that a black skin is a blessing, and that the negro is the finest type of a perfect man that exists on the earth; but to us such teachings are foolishness. We understand that when God made man in his own image and pronounced him very good, that he made him white. We have no record of any of God's favored servants being of a black race. All His prophets and apostles belonged to the most handsome race on the face of the earth β€” Israel, who still, as represented in the scattered tribe of Judah, bear the impress of their former beauty. In this race was born His Son Jesus, who, we are told was very lovely, and "in the express image of his Father's person," and every angel who ever brought a message of God's mercy to man was beautiful to look upon, clad in the purest white and with a countenance bright as the noonday sun.

>The pure Negro, as represented by the people of Guinea and its neighboring countries, is generally regarded as the unmixed descendant of Ham. Our engraving of a Negro is of this type. Their skin is quite black, their hair woolly and black, their intelligence stunted, and they appear never to have arisen from the most savage state of barbarism.

>Abyssinia lies on the east coast of Africa, immediately south of Nubia, and near the mouth of the Red Sea...It is certainly possible that some of the Jewish traders settled in Abyssinia, and forgetful of the law of Moses, married some of the dark-skinned daughters of the land, who have the reputation of being very beautiful and finely made.

Edit: George Q Cannon DID NOT write this. He's the editor and publisher of this magazine.

Part 49: CES Letter Witnesses Questions [Section D]

Entries in this series (this link does not work properly in old Reddit or 3rd-party apps): https://www.reddit.com/r/lds/collection/11be9581-6e2e-4837-9ed4-30f5e37782b2

The claim that the Book of Mormon witnesses didn’t actually see the plates except through β€œspiritual eyes,” which critics take to mean β€œimagination,” is one of the more common claims against them that you’ll see. Jeremy’s hardly the first to make this accusation, and it has been answered many, many times over the years. Once you see how flimsy these quotes are, and how dishonest the CES Letter is in packaging them, you’re going to realize that this bit only works if you don’t investigate it at all.

Jeremy begins:

> People believed they could see things as a vision in their mind. They called it β€œsecond sight.” We call it β€œimagination.” It made no difference to these people if they saw with their natural eyes or their spiritual eyes as both were one and the same.

Jeremy’s conflating four different things here. Second sight is a type of extrasensory perception, or ESP. It’s also often called clairvoyance. There’s no concrete evidence it actually exists and it’s not something I personally believe in, but it’s not the same thing as imagination. It’s also not the same thing as seeing things with either your natural eyes or spiritual eyes. Moreover, people who believe in second sight know full well there is a difference between what they believe is a psychic vision and something that happens in person, directly in front of them. They are not β€œone and the same.”

> As mentioned previously, people believed they could see spirits and their dwelling places in the local hills along with seeing buried treasure deep in the ground. This supernatural way of seeing the world is also referred in Doctrine & Covenants as β€œthe eyes of our understanding.”

Some people believed they could see spirits, sure, but the witnesses were not listed among them. None of them ever claimed to have second sight, and those spirits being referenced are not divine messengers sent from God. People who believe they can see spirits are talking about ghosts or other spectral apparitions. And when the Letter talks about those spirits having their dwelling places in local hills, it’s talking about fairies. Seco

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

The stone box from the Hill Cumorah was also apparently left exposed for the display of residents and visitors to Palmyra for decades.

The stone box from the Hill Cumorah was also apparently left exposed for the display of residents and visitors to Palmyra for decades. In 1893, Elder Edward Stevenson wrote that during a trip to Palmyra β€œearly on a summer’s morning in the year 1870,” he had been shown where the stone box once was by a local resident who lived near the Hill Cumorah. Stevenson said, β€œQuestioning him closely he [the local] stated that he had seen some good sized flat stones that had rolled down and lay near the bottom of the hill. This had occurred after the contents of the box had been removed and these stones were doubtless the ones that formerly composed the box. I felt a strong desire to see these ancient relics and told him I would be much pleased to have him inform me where they were to be found. He stated that they had long since been taken away.” Edward Stevenson, Reminiscences of Joseph, the Prophet, and the Coming Forth of the Book of Mormon (Salt Lake City: 1893), 10, 13. and https://rsc.byu.edu/coming-forth-book-m ... on-objects

... Said I, β€˜how do you know that Joe Smith has the plates?’ They replied: β€˜we saw the plates [place] in the hill that he took them out of just as he described it to us before he obtained them.’ These parties were so positive in their statements that I began to believe there must be some foundation for the stories then in circulation all over that part of the country.Kansas City Daily Journal, June 5, 1881; reprinted in the Deseret Evening News, June 11, 1881; emphasis added.

In another interview Whitmer told a reporter that β€œthe community in which he [Whitmer] lived . . . was alive with excitement in regard to Smith’s finding a great treasure, and they informed him that they knew that Smith had the plates, as they had seen the place that he had taken them from, on the hill Cumorah.” β€œThe Last Man,” Chicago Times, October 17, 1881, as cited in George Reynolds, The Myth of the β€œManuscript Found” (Salt Lake City: Juvenile Instructor Office, 1883), 82; emphasis added.

Whitmer and Cowdery were greatly impressed by the recital of this strange story, and were conducted to the hill, where they personally viewed the receptacle in which Moroni, at the beginning of the fifth century, had concealed the history of his fathers.[https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Chicago_ ... on-objects](https://www.l

Student File #7: The Hidden Arte of Kuda Izuna

Previous: Shizuyama Mashiro

Before starting with our adorable fox-girl, from this character analysis and forward, I will be gradually trying new things with this series, including adding new sections of information when applicable. In this case, with Izuna, I will be discussing the (potential) origins/references to her character.

The references I will mention will be at least partially substantiated, although it goes without saying they could wind up as being coincidental. With that all being said:

Kuda Gitsune: The Folklore of Izuna

As you may have noticed just now, Izuna's full name consists of "Kuda" and "Izuna", both relating to a magical entity from Japanese folklore. Kuda refers to the Kuda Gitsune, a creature often depicted as a weasel or fox. These fox were typically summoned by a sorcerer, to which the would offer their servitude to. When contracted, Kuda Gitsune could read through their master's entire life (both past and future) as if they were viewing it from an archive, as well as be sent out to afflict misfortune those who were enemies to their owner. As a result, superstitions often rose up, claiming people or places to have been cursed by a fox spirit. Izuna are very similar in nature to Kuda Gitsune, being fox-servants who could enlighten their owners or attack their enemies.

When activating her EX skill, Izuna teleports, leaving behind a white statue of a fox. In some references, Izuna were linked to Buddhism, where they were fox-spirits employed by Izuna Gongen, powerful entities that, coincidentally enough, were often depicted as riding on the backs of white fox.

With folklore like this being so prevalent, it comes as no surprise that foxes, in Japanese culture, are associated with magic and spirituality, also offering an idea as to why Izuna is a Mystic character.
