I like Hager, but I'm well aware of his limitations as a wrestler. Didn't like the fake MMA match with Wardlow, but I think he's a good midcarder and as #2 for Jericho.
AEW had a bit of an issue with training mentoring the big guys. So they got in Paul Wight and Mark Henry to solve the issue. If AEW are looking to integrate some MMA fighters into the roster (and even if they just want them as exhibition events), Jake is perfectly suited to support or mentor these guys. His position on the card also means he can take the singles losses or comfortably get put in tag teams of 2-5 to get them more comfortable in the ring, while keeping the big match feel and making sure the MMA guys are protected.
The JDS match I think highlighted his value for AEW. JDS is likely not comfortable in pure wrestling, but put him in an mma-ish spot, with someone who is comfortable with MMA, and he can show his value in a great way. Tell a UFC fighter to go at 3/4 speed and pull punches, and let Hager call the match, and you'll keep people in their comfort zone.
If something happens like an accidental full power punch, Hager is used to it, goes in fully aware that accidents happen in sparring, and is a veteran (in wrestling) enough to work through (or call a change if serious), and knows that these are new guys doing their best. Potatoes by wrestlers are almost certainly deliberate, and other wrestlers without the background might not appreciate that it would be completely accidental as an MMA guy.
You can't make kayfabe MMA look amazing, but it gives JDS a fantastic base to begin in the ring, and makes the match look high quality.
As an aside, I loved the storytelling in the main event. JDS is better at MMA than Hager, but Hager can win the exchange through use of "wrestling stuff" like finishing moves, tables etc that the MMA stars would not be used to. Protects everyone involved imo.
