“Illusory superiority effect” in ELO

I love this game, I love this community, but just a small complaint.

Just like nearly 90% of the people think they are an above average driver, seemingly 90% of all players on this Reddit claim to have an ELO of more than 1300. In fact almost everyone seems to argue that a 1300-1400 ELO is “low-to-average”.

This is statistically impossible, as a recent ELO distribution has shown that a 1300-1400 ELO is almost 2 standard deviations higher than the mean. Consequently this ELO means you are at least in the top 10% of all players.

While it is possible that there is some selection bias and that people actively browsing this Reddit are better than average, I do not believe this sample bias is high enough to explain this mismatch.

If people are reading this, please abstain from telling others you are a 1300+ ELO player, when you are not. I for one am proud to admit I am a ~ 1100 players!

Anyway, thank you for listening to my rant!

WTW for illusory superiority in this sense (not hypocritical): E.g: A Nigerian finds it annoying that all Nigerians eat apples. However, he also eats Apples. So he is putting him self on a ---------------? (another example inside, sorry for my bad explanation)

Now that I read my title, its not the best example: Another example:

As a 100% full born Brit, why do I love you guys but fucking hate all of you outside the UK. Why are the Brits famously bad tourists - Fact or myth?

Am I putting myself on a --------------?

or I am putting myself on a -------------.

I read a comment about Illusory superiority. Is it bad to think I am superior to the next person? (In reality, I am not). But I think this condition is keeping me down. How do I overcome this, Reddit?

TIL about Illusory superiority. Think YOU'RE an above-average driver?

Drivers and traffic are bad... well just about everywhere I've been.

Is there really a way to objectively determine how your skills match up when you're the one determining? Have you ever driven a car at it's limits?

And that is different from knowing the rules and process. YES everyone going faster should enjoy the slower drivers staying right. But how does you knowing that as you sit behind the slow car in the left lane make you above average vs a lawful driver?

My favorite George Carlin quote: "Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac? "
