Scam? FireWire IEEE 1394 with DV port input on one end and USB on the other

I have been working with MiniDVD disc camcorders for a few years and I recently began using a tape camcorder (Canon ZR40). I loaded a new tape, got some footage, and then found that I had no way to transport it to my MacBook. So I bought this cord off of Amazon, which, in retrospect, looks extremely shady. Every Youtube tutorial I watch etc they're using like 3 converters to get the signal to their MacBook, while I have this USB/firewire combo cord that requires no converter except a USB to USB C one. I will admit that I don't know anything about cables.

I can't get any footage onto my Mac; I tried with Quicktime, iMovie, and Premiere. They simply do not detect the camcorder. It does not come up at all when I check System Information. πŸ˜”

HOWEVER, the camcorder knows that it's connected to something, because the "DV IN" message is coming up. This is giving me hope. Maybe there's something wrong that isn't cord-related? How stupid am I for buying this product? What can I do/buy to get this footage on my computer?

Connecting IEEE 1394 to Dell Laptop... Issues

Hi all!

I couldn't find anything in a search, so... I'm having trouble connecting my launch monitor to a Dell laptop.

The LM is firewire-based. When I plug it in, I get the "dedunk" sound, but the program I run says my LM isn't connected.

The laptop's running Windows 7 Pro, and I have the 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (legacy) driver running (For 32-bit, because it won't run in 64).

The LM is based on the Unibrain Fire-I driver/Point Fire Dragonfly (that's what it says in Device Manager, anyway).

Any tips, ideas, or stuff to try? I've done some steps from websites, to no avail. But maybe with a more conversation-like setup, I can work through it.

Writing/Reading to a Firewire (IEEE 1394) interface

I'm currently struggling writing a simple c++ program in Windows to read and write to my laptop's firewire expresscard and I wondered if Reddit could please help.

People have told me it's easy, but I'm struggling to find any guides as to any APIs I can use and how to use them.

I've downloaded and installed the windows driver kit (someone pointed me in that direction), but their documentation really isn't helping much.

ANY help on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

Which standards have originated from within Apple?

Throughout the years I’ve heard of many widely adopted tech-standards, only to occasionally hear some were made by Apple (or at least were pushed to the mainstream by them). I’m aware a lot of standards have originated from many different companies, but for now I am curious to know which standards have originated from within Apple?

Does someone know of a summary of this online? Otherwise, I will update the list below based on contributions made by you, and I will be grateful for any additions to the list! Full-disclosure: I’m just a nerd and I like lists.

Widely adopted technologies (standards):

  • 1980: Affordable computer mouse segment (refined by Apple; inspired by Xerox; debatable)
  • 1983: GUI-based computer segment (pushed by Apple; inspired by Xerox)
  • 1984: Speech system integrated into an operating system (pushed by Apple)
  • 1987: Unicode (co-initiated by Xerox and Apple)
  • 1991: TrueType / .ttf (by Apple; replacing bitmap fonts)
  • 1992: ARMv6 / 64-bit architecture (refined / pushed by Apple)
  • 1994: The placing of the touchpad (refined / pushed by Apple via PowerBook 500 series)
  • 1998: USB-A physical connector (pushed by Apple via iMac; replacing SCSI)
  • 1999: WiFi (pushed by Apple via iBook)
  • 1999: PDF (pushed by Apple via Quartz 2D)
  • 2001: WebKit (fork by Apple)
  • 2002: CUPS (refined by Apple; made by Micheal Sweet)
  • 2005: Private browsing feature (pushed by Apple via Safari 2.0)
  • 2005: RSS (pushed by Apple via Safari 2.0)
  • 2005: Podcasts (pushed by Apple via iTunes 4.9, iTunes Music Store, Garageband and QuickTime Pro)

How to reinstall on this iBook G4 without a DVD drive?

I've got this iBook G4 which has a dead optical drive. (I asked about that before.) Assuming I can put it back together (sans DVD), I'd like to reinstall Mac OSX. While I had it apart I hooked the hard disk up to my Linux laptop and erased it. It is currently an empty ext4 partitioned drive. That may not have been the best way to go, but if the machine never came back together, I wanted to make sure there were no remaining traces of my friend's old bits on the disk.

I have an older MacBook Pro with a functioning DVD drive and newer Firewire. The iBook has the older Firewire connector. Should I be able to use a cable like this and Mac OSX install disk (what version?) then boot the iBook in target disk mode to reinstall?

SSD for an old Core 2 Duo T5900 laptop, with or without DRAM?

Does it matter too much to choose between a SATA III ssd with or without DRAM for an ancient laptop (circa 2008)?

The cheapest SATAIII SSDS with DRAM, available in my market (Mexico), are the WD Blue series and Adata's SU800. Sometimes the Crucial MX500 pops up for sale in Amazon or Mercado Libre (the Mexican equivalent of eBay) but the price is consistently above the previous two.

Any Samsung SSD is out the question, the price for the drive itself is way too expensive for such an ancient piece of hardware... Just wait to read the specs down below.

Or... Is it ok for this case-scenario to get a dram-less ssd? Adata's su630 and Kingston's a400 SSDs are the cheapest options available in my area, while the Patriot Burst Elite sometimes is for sale at around the same price. WD Green and Crucial BX500 are available too, but the price increase for the BX500 is substancial -which makes me wonder if such a spending is justified for this laptop-.The current hard drive is a 5400rpm spinner over sata III/300mbps.

This machine is going to be used primarily for media streaming at 1080p (which currently does fairly well), and light web browsing, and as a spare computer for some productivity work: small zoom or Google Meet conferences (4-6 participants at most), reading PDF files and some office work once in a while (it runs office 365 reasonably good once it's loaded on memory). There's also the nostalgia factor: this was my high school and early college gear.

So, no multitasking for sure and no more than 4 or 5 tabs at once, as it becomes painstakingly slow!

I'll appreciate your feedback on this regard. I will upgrade to an SSD for sure, just want to make the best decision possible for the old Sony ;)

----------------Current specs:

-Brand and model: Sony Vaio VGN-NS150FJ (PCG-7141P)

-CPU: Core 2 Duo t5900 2.2GHz (stock, 65nm, 2 cores, 2 threads, 2 MB L2 cache, 800 MHz fsb, 64 bit)(will re-grease the heatsink when ordering the ssd)

-Memory: two 2gb DDR2 6400 banks (don't know their timings but, c'mon: it's old tech for 2021 anyway)

-Chipset and graphics: Mobile Intel GMA 4500M, DirectX 12 (according to dxdiag) WDDM 1.1; I assume it's got shared memory instead of dedicated.

-Os: Windows 10 21H1 64 bit, build 19043.1288 (might try to unofficially install win11 just for fun, and to see how far can this dinosaur get: it originally came with Vista!)

-Storage: WD Scorpio Blue 500gb, SATA/300
