Groundhog Day; Live Die Repeat; Happy Death Day (1 & 2); Palm Springs - these are all phenomenally entertaining films because there is frankly so much to unpack

It would seem like an β€˜overused’ formula- but with these films it just works so well! It makes me think in my own life- if today was constantly reset how would I explore the boundaries of today- break into neighbours homes? Ok well there’s a bleak start... but I’d definitely do it. Maybe steal a PS5. Then maybe learn all the secrets of people in my lives? Watch everything on Netflix etc. Then get super bored with having done everything and got to explore everything and everything... learn everything... discover the limitations and boundaries and learn how to creatively overcome them... again and again... hate life again... love it again... honestly it’s just got so much limits.

It’s why it’s such a clever movie format. I know this is a very amateur discussion point... but ya know... it’s just quality entertainment and I wanted to state that

The Anti-Campaign inspired by the film"Groundhog day."

(Edit)

So to start off, I should have known this kind of thing was going to happen right away.

I've been a huge D&D enthusiast for over 3 years now, around the time of my early interest of the game, I introduced the hobby to one of my close friends. He comes from a primarily video game background, and had never played any type of role play tabletop game.

In order to keep names private, we will call him Mike. Mike is one of my closest friends who I've known for 4 years now. Mike and I have many of the same interests and he's also an artist who loves to draw and enjoys things that are related to D&D.

He really enjoyed the idea of the hobby and he wanted to get into it. So I host a couple of sessions as the DM, and he gets to play a few different PCS with each new campaign. Eventually wanted to take up the role of the DM. He was still fairly new to the hobby, and still had little to no knowledge of the basics.

So he and I agreed to have a one-on-one campaign session. But I can't stress this enough, he was still extremely unaware of many of the basics.

As an example for the first 6 months, he believed "Hit Points" meant how much damage you deal per turn. He didn't understand that "HP" is the video game abbreviation, or acronym, for "Hit Points".

I knew that this may be an awkward session, but I was willing to encourage him and just see what he had prepared. I allowed him to borrow all of my sourcebooks to help him build his campaign.

I gave him a couple of weeks and he said that he felt pretty confident in what he had.

As a disclaimer, if a new person wants to be the DM, I will never tell them that they can't. However I will politely stress the fact that in order to be a good DM, you need to have a firm understanding of the basics. Without the basics, you have no foundation to build a campaign.

The session starts with my character waking up in bed. Mike explains that my character I had spent money the previous night to stay at the local Inn. I was currently playing a 3rd level hill dwarf, Tempest Cleric named "Garrick Stormfel".

As I wake up it's about 9 in the morning, the building is 3 stories tall, the 1st floor is a large serving area, where customers can come in to purchase alcohol and food. The 2nd and 3rd floors have rooms to spend the night.

As my character goes downstairs, nothing really out of the ordinary happens. It looks pretty busy and there are many customers crowded on the 1st floor.

There's a relatively wide s

β€œGroundhog Day for a Black Man” by Cynthia Kao copied by Netflix & NowThis and copy won an Oscar

In 2016, Cynthia Kao wrote and directed a short called β€œGroundhog Day for a Black Man”. Then NowThis asked to share her video to amplify its message. She allowed it and they did so in May of 2020.

Then I’m April of this year, Netflix, with producing support from Now This, distributed a direct ripoff of Cynthia Kao’s film. That copied work won an Oscar at this year’s Academy Awards.

Cynthia Kao deserves credit and compensation for her stolen work.

Groundhog Day - Rita put Phil in the time loop and is passively controlling his progression through the film

It’s established in the beginning of the movie that the character β€œRita” is new to the News station that Phil is the weatherman at. Phil says that it will be his fourth time returning to Punxsutawney PA to cover the Groundhog festival. The cameraman Larry and Phil have a sarcastic relationship that suggests they’ve know each other for years. The only variable that’s different in the trip to Punxsutawney is Rita. She quickly sees that Phil is so egocentric that the only way for him to see the error of his ways would be to give him essentially eternity to turn his life around and care for others.

The first hint of Rita being behind the time loop is on the third day when Phil is in the diner with her, having ordered just about everything on the menu. After he shoves an entire piece of Strawberry shortcake into his mouth, Rita recites the poem by Sir Walter Scott:

The wretch, concentred all in self, Living, shall forfeit fair renown, And, doubly dying, shall go down To the vile dust from whence he sprung, Unwept, unhonored , and unsung.

As she recites this the camera slightly zooms towards her, implying malevolent intent. Her attitude quickly shifts when Phil comes back at her with a sarcastic comment.

Throughout the film, Phil’s attempts to woo Rita whether successful or not drive his character forward as he progresses through the hedonistic, depressed, and good samaritan phases of the time loop. This suggests that she is manipulating his actions (albeit it passively) towards what she feels is a satisfying conclusion to Phil’s character growth. Rita goes along with the continuing of everyday like she’s unaware, but is definitely aware of the day restarting and Phil’s progression.

As soon as Phil is able to help just about everyone in town, and impress Rita, his character growth is considered complete by her. The movie ends with her releasing him from the time loop.

I have acted in over 200 TV shows and films, including "Groundhog Day," "Californication" and "Memento." Now I'm making my own movie. My name is Stephen Tobolowsky. Ask Me Anything.

Hi Reddit: I've stopped by here a few times and it's always been fun! You guys probably know me as Ned Ryerson in Groundhog Day, Sammy Jankis in Memento, or Stu Beggs in Californication. In the past four years, I've also been telling stories as myself on a podcast called The Tobolowsky Files.

Now we're trying to make a storytelling film. You can help us out and see some of our great rewards by going to our Kickstarter page. The rewards include my original script from Groundhog Day, autographed copies of my book The Dangerous Animals Club, and the opportunity to have me come to your house (if the price is right!).

So let's do this, Reddit. Ask me anything.

Edit: Verification.

Edit 2: It's 3:00 PM Pacific, we are two hours in and still going strong! At this point, I should probably point out that you can also follow me on Twitter and Facebook.

Edit 3: After four hours of answering as many questions as possible, it's time for me to go. Thanks for all your questions, Reddit. It has been so much fun.
