I am an Australian, and I was looking into the federation of our country and how we proposed both New Zealand and Fiji join the federation. It struck me that all three of our countries were in a similar region of the earth with similar scenarios (british settlers coming into natively owned land), and yet Fiji has ended up in a very different position to Australia and New Zealand in terms of keeping their native majority; Aboriginal Australians and Maori Peoples have become minorities in their ancestral homes, compared to Fiji. Could anybody explain why this is the case? Was there any specific policies or geopolitical factors that caused this difference?
edit: As soon as I posted, I noticed the spelling mistake in title, forgive me.
This is something I've wondered about the past few days.
I understand that these colonial expeditions were, more than anything, business ventures. They required huge sums of capital from investors, and of course those investors expected high returns for the high risk.
So where was the profit expected to be generated? How would explorers "sell" their expedition to investors? What could/would they have pointed to and said "this is how we will make money"?
