A list of puns related to "Golden Raspberry Awards"
And this is for the simple fact that it's the general viewing public who votes on them rather than invite only panels of journalists and film makers who vote on other awards like the Emmys and Oscars.
At the end of the day, it's the viewing public's opinion that really matters when it comes to movies as they're the ones that movies are made for.
Also, the voting organisations for mainstream awards are notoriously corrupt. For example, Emily in Paris (a show that's universally panned for being boring pretentious and racist) was nominated for a Golden globe because the show's producers took the HFPA (the organization who votes on the Golden globes) on a luxury French vacation.
Movie awards for the Worst in Film that have been going since 1980. You can only join them if you cough up $40. For context, the Star Wars Prequels have been nominated for a total 15 awards, winning four. The Star Wars Sequels, not a single nomination, despite being objectively worse. For any of the terrible Disney films from the last few years (A Wrinkle in Time, any of the remakes, Artemis Fowl), not a single nomination save for Will Smith's 'Razzie Redeemer' nomination for Aladdin (go to hell). Joker was nominated for one award for 'Worst Reckless Disregard of Human Life and Public Property' (What does that even mean???). Are they Disney shills or do they just not care?

1970 would have most likely been Myra Breckinridge, and 1979 would likely have been Spielberg's 1941, but what about the rest of the 70s? Would X-Rated and other forms of grindhouse exploitation cinema dominate the decade, or would other forms of cinematic schlock reign supreme?
This ended up being somewhat longer than I expected, even though I was trying to make it as short as I could, so I hope itβs worth it.
This is not about their ceremonies where they hand out trophies but the actual ballots and their nominations/wins. I donβt want to go into every little detail as to why the Razzies are inherently weak and detrimental to the concept of an award for bad movies, but it does go well beyond the usual complaint of βoh no they nominated Kubrickβ or βoh no Morricone got shamed for his music scoreβ because looking at everything--and I mean everything--theyβve done from 1980 to now, it feels more sad than charming or enlightening or even funny. Never mind the actual movies they take shots at; their entire philosophy of how to target bad movies within a year is so barebones and sloppily established. And before you dismiss it with the usual βdonβt take the Razzies seriously because theyβre just a jokeβ statement, I encourage you to go along with me on this.
The Razzies were originally established as a sort of joke by publicist John Wilson and his friends to take shots at bad movies of a given year, starting with 1980. It was pretty laid back and informal when it first came around, as it was more about shaming a small crop of stuff they saw, such as musicals like Canβt Stop the Music and Xanadu, but as the years went by, they figured out how to make the whole ordeal more of an opportunity to be covered by publicity and become a sort of household name. The problem was that it never really got much better from there, per se. Instead of finding interesting ways of shunning the worst movies in a given year, they dedicated their limited categories to shaming movies they were not happy about. And I guess thatβs their way of looking at some movies as the worst in a year, since actually defining what movies could qualify as the absolute worst would include stuff that would normally be underneath the Razziesβ notice. The problem is that what actually happened was that we got a bunch of tabloid-fueled considerations that didnβt exactly stay in depth or even consistent with that theory. In fact, there have been quite a few times theyβve been contradictory with their ballots.
I think a lot of the problems the Razzies have come directly from trying to compete with the Oscars. A lot of what makes the Razzies what they are tends to be based on riffs of the Oscars, and in hindsight itβs a pretty lousy approach since they never seemed to evolve

I learned about this because they had the gall to nominate Spike Lee for He Got Game
