SAN JOSE, Calif. - The 12-year-old girl sat on the bottom bunk bed where her older sister, Keyla Salazar, used to sleep.
Lyann Salazar held a pencil in one hand and, in the other, an iPhone displaying a picture of Keyla. She drew a portrait of Keyla on a blank page of her notebook.
Lyann and Keyla used to share the small bedroom in their San Jose home, but now Lyann sleeps there alone, with just Keyla's Chihuahua, Lucky, to comfort her.
"She's drawing and writing to her sister to give her a last goodbye," the sisters' grandmother, Betzabe Vargas Fabes, said in Spanish.
Keyla was one of three people shot to death last week at the Gilroy Garlic Festival, and in a few days her family would gather for her funeral.
Lyann looked up from the bed, but remained silent as she sketched outlines of her sister's face.
The room was simple, just how Keyla liked it.
Scattered about were reminders of Keyla: A pink teddy bear with the word "princess" sewn across the front. Plastic stars the girls had stuck on the ceiling that lighted up at night. Several pairs of Keyla's headphones that she used while making YouTube videos and animations on her computer and iPad.
"The sisters were so united. Keyla would draw there, and she (Lyann) would draw here," Fabes, 58, said, pointing to opposite sides of the lower bunk.
On Saturday, six days after the shooting in Gilroy, a gunman opened fire near a shopping mall in El Paso, Texas, killing 22 people and wounding more than two dozen others. It was the same day that Keyla's family and community honored her at a vigil at Latino College Preparatory Academy, the school that she was set to attend this fall.
The 21-year-old gunman arrested in the El Paso massacre is believed to have written a hate-filled manifesto disparaging Latino immigrants.
Law enforcement officials said they have not uncovered any evidence that the Gilroy gunman targeted a particular race. But before the shooting, he posted a photo on Instagram with a caption that read, in part: "Why overcrowd towns and pave more open space to make room for hordes of mestizos?"
As in Gilroy, many of the El Paso victims were Latinos. "At this point we are really traumatized. We feel like we can't go to the grocery store because we feel like something is going to happen," said Keyla's aunt, Katiuska Pimentel, 24. "We feel their pain."

Just a couple of hours ago I was at the Gilroy Garlic Festival volunteering for the day when the shooting began. I am now home and safe and just wanted to provide any insight into this tragedy, at least from my perspective. I also think it is important to document my experience while it is fresh on my mind.
I immediately evacuated opposite the direction of the shots I heard and never saw the suspect or victims. I estimate I was within 100 feet of the shooter based on the sound of the gunshots.
Edit: This is the most comprehensive description of my experience, so if any other comments seem fuzzy I recommend giving that a read. Finally, in a couple hours I will be out of service for a backpacking trip for the next week. I pray to the families and friends who have lost someone on this tragic day.
I am also thankful that I did not go to the festival as planned with my family today.
I am also tremendously saddened on how low some people in this world can get, people who decide to go out and shoot innocent civilians on what would have been a day of fun and family memories.
While I pray that the injured are on their way to recovery, I also pray that the world would be a much nicer place for every one, so no one would have go through heartbreak when they hear that one of their family member's has been killed in a shooting.
This is heartbreaking, crushing, devastating; my people - my neighbors, have been terrorized. Don’t you dare go pointing fingers at us because you hate our state for being majority democratic. Tf is wrong with u playing the blame game at a time like this, people died! Children have been hurt and traumatized for life or worse! Fuck your need to be self righteous! Have some gd sympathy/empathy for Christ’s sake even if just for a few minutes. Your fellow Americans were gunned down AT.A.FESTIVAL. I understand this event means the gun debate will be brought back into the spotlight but you have no right to put the blame on innocents who had no way of predicting their future just so you can try and prove some bizarre and most likely null - point or use this tragic situation as a bargaining chip.
