A list of puns related to "Geneva Bible"
Hi all. I am looking at getting a copy of the Geneva Bible and am trying to decide between:
the 1560 by Hendrickson Publishers (which is a facsimile of an original 1560, I believe);
the 1599 by Tolle Lege Press (transcribed in modern English and a modern typeface);
and the 1602 New Testament introduced by Gerald Sheppard.
My main question, for those that know, is the difference in the footnotes. Are they relatively the same?
Just got a facsimile 1599 Geneva bible and noticed on the artistic page toward the beginning (the same engraving is present at the beginning of the new testament, too) a little song at the bottom of the page!

I have degrees in music, but I'm not positive I'm reading it right. I can't tell where middle C is, but maybe third line from the top. This is supported by the location of the flat in the space below that line. A circle with a line through it might be "imperfect" meter, and I THINK notation like that would be used in 1599? This looks like a clearer image: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2e/Title_Page_Geneva_Bible_Dated_1599_But_Actually_Circa_1616-1625.jpg?1631415613706
If so, it looks like we have
c d c a c bes a bes g f (bes?) f a bes d?
Anyone recognize this tune? I assume it wouldn't be from any Roman plainsongs (gradual, kyrie, introit, etc.) because the Geneva authors wouldn't put anything "Romish" in their book, but what would it be?
Recently discovered these Biblesβ existence, yet canβt seem to find a definitive answer as to the difference between the two. I plan to purchase one, and would prefer to avoid purchasing both if one translation truly is βbetterβ than the other. Was the later version just an update [of English spelling] to the old one, much like the difference in spelling from The Great Bible to the first Geneva Bible?
I want to add the GB to my collection both for the itβs historical value as a Bible translation and because I am a fan of Shakespeare, and want to read the Bible we would have read. Who makes the best edition? And I have seen on Biblegateway.com there is a Revised Geneva Bible. Does anyone know anything about it?
Does anyone else use this? I got a copy the other day and have enjoyed it so far. For what I can see the only changes made are replacing some of the oddly sounding letters that would read differently in our current understanding.
I really like the notes from the reformers as well.
Does it use the same manuscripts as the KJV? Also, what would be the best one to buy, provided it is a good choice?
Thank you!
I have this Bible and it's my primary one now. The language is hard to get around at times, but the notes are superb. The only thing I've ever read about this Bible is that the notes come from "the reformers." I know that Calvin, and Knox contributed along with others, but it doesn't say who wrote what and where.
It would be nice if Tolle Lege would update it and the notes into a more modern vernacular something akin to NKJV.
Does the Bible predict the future with stunning accuracy as so many in the end-times camp have claimed?
I grew up in the rapture-me-outta-here end times movement, and have spilled no shortage of ink critiquing itβ even poking a bit of fun at it. As a theologian I fall into a category of belief that sees biblical prophecies about βthe endβ as being events that have mostly been fulfilled in the past, but I try to hold that belief gently and recognize I could be wrong.
Many of my fellow Christians in America have warned me over the years of exactly that, often telling me: βI feel sorry for you, because when the Antichrist comes youβre not even going to recognize him!β
To honor those who have given me such warning, I decided to spend the past week studying the most significant biblical prophecies and descriptions typically believed by my conservative friends to refer the Antichrist. If my evangelical friends are correct, and if itβs entirely possible that the Antichrist is on the global scene today, I certainly wouldnβt want to be the only person in the room who didnβt recognize the Antichrist when I saw him.
In case you too are a bit rusty in the area of biblical predictions about the coming Antichrist and donβt want to be oblivious if such a person were to arise, consider me your chief antichristologist who is more than happy to help you out.
Here are the no-kidding-not-satire-prophecies and signs of the antichrist the Bible tells us to watch out for⦠and that blew my mind by the time I was done:
This verse helps us start by narrowing down the nations and times the Antichrist could come from. The passage directly states he is from a nation that was different from times before, in that it was powerful enough to crush and destroy the entire earthβ likely a nuclear superpower. Revelation also speaks of the Antichrist and his prophet having the power to βcall down fire from the sky,β which further supports this notion.
Thus, when considering the prophecy in light of the modern world[, it most likely leaves Russia or the United States](https://www.benjaminlcorey.com/who-has-the-most-nuclear-weap
