Senator Joe Lieberman holds up a light gun revolver from Konami's "Lethal Enforcers" game during the widely publicized Congressional hearing regarding violent video games on December 9, 1993. The hearing is largely credited for the birth of the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). [956 x 640]

Almost daily there are posts about people’s mental well-being and how depressed they are about their elo rating or not improving or they get super anxious thinking about chess. Please remember, chess is a board game. That’s it.

Your mental well-being is a million times more important than being good at a board game.

It’s alarming how many posts there are that typically get deleted with users asking for advice about their depression, anxiety and more due to chess. Kindly, it is just a board game. That’s it. If you’re bad at it is does not mean you aren’t brilliant - it just means you aren’t good at this board game right now. If you’re good at chess, it doesn’t mean you’re brilliant; you’re good at the board game. Your not saving humanity, cutting out a rare tumor, curing cancer, building rocket ships, saving or extending people’s lives; you’re winning at chess. Stop playing if you get to the point where you notice it affecting your mental health.

A board game is not worth it.

I graphed the number of popular board games (5000 ratings on BGG) each year since 1995

https://preview.redd.it/4vye1rp0her61.png?width=4702&format=png&auto=webp&s=37e8e0ac0279c97683441db92a7bb7e9da74593a

The data came from Board Game Geek, including the thumbnails of the games. I did some hunting on BGG to find higher resolution AND first edition images, so these might bring back fun memories. I made the graph with Datawrapper and added the images using PowerPoint (I had to learn how to increase the DPI to make them readable).

This graph shows some interesting trends and important years.

  • 1995: Catan started the era of modern board gaming. The fact that the most popular games in the following years were expansions or re-implementations shows how influential it was.
  • 2000: Carcassonne was the next modern classic, and once again its expansions dominated the next several years, not to mention the similar Alhambra in 2003.
  • 2004: Our first big spike comes with Ticket to Ride, the third of the "Holy Trinity of Gateway games." This was also the year of Power Grid, one of the most popular medium-weight games.
  • 2008: This might look like a dip, but that is only because three games must have sucked all the attention. Pandemic, Dominion, and Dixit are three of the most popular games of all time, enough that they are STILL making expansions or new versions. I think these three spurred to the rapid growth in board gaming over the following years.
  • 2015: The curve reaches its peak with Codenames, the popular party game that appeals to advanced and casual gamers, and 7 Wonders Duel, the highest rated 2-player game, reimplementing 2010’s 7 Wonders.
  • 2016: This is the year medium-heavy games went mainstream, when both Terraforming Mars and Scythe were released. The only other years with heavier games taking the top spot were 2002 (Puerto Rico) and 2007 (Agricola).

There appears to be a steep drop in the last few years. This is because I am sorting by the number of ratings, so we can assume that it takes a game two or three years to really catch on with a wide audience. I’m interested to see how the more recent games--Azul, Root, Wingspan, and Gloomhaven--affect upcoming trends.

This is my first ever data visualization, but I'd like to do a lot more about the trends in modern Board gaming! Please let me know if you have any advice on making graphs like

Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown rated by Korean Rating Board for PS4

Turned out this game is originally titled "Virtua Fighter esports" according to the Korea rating board.

I'm not sure if this means the game is titled "esports" in japan, and will be released as "ultimate showdown" in Korea and some other countries,

or the game was submitted as 'esports' initially and was later filed for change to 'ultimate showdown'.

But we at least now know this is that esports thingy that Sega's talked about at TGS last year
