How to Make Effective Microorganisms for Compost and Organic Plant Boosters

There's no one-size-fits all way to compost. An agroforestry grower, a large scale farmer, and a home gardener can all benefit from composting, but the methods and techniques need to be specific to the needs of the land and location.

But one way all food growers can make better compost is with the addition of EM, Effective Microorganisms.

For any organic matter to compost and boost soil fertility/plant growth, you need more than the right proportion of nitrogen to carbon-- you also need microbes!

EM is a great way to add to and feed millions of beneficial microbes that help plants grow, fruit, and resist disease.

I've been watching the amazing results our friends at the Mashpi Shungo Agroforestry cacao farm have been getting with EM for the past four years. Now that our own food forest here at SueΓ±o de Vida is maturing, I'm ready to make my own batch.

I followed this recipe, very similar to what Mashpi uses, at the Permaculture Research Institute. Ingredients can be adjusted for what you have available.

Good luck with making your own EM and boosting your soil and plants!

Exciting update to this post: I've been using the EM formula I make in this video for a few months now--and my papaya trees have taken off! They had some fruit before, but now they are producing A LOT of much bigger fruits!

Are people using Effective Microorganisms (EM or EM1)?

I've been reading about this and the science behind it sounds a little "alternative" at times, but it might just be that the people talking about it don't really understand it in a sciency way.

Supposedly this bacterial mixture, when "activated" with molasses and water, makes for a great everything. It's supposed to be good for your plant's production, immune esystem, the soil quality, speeds up any composting of biological material still in your soil. You can easily make liters of this stuff for little money. So pretty much a cheap and easy thing that does LOTS of good, so kind of: sounds too good to be true...

Anybody got experience with the stuff?

Effective Microorganisms (EM) - Share your experiences!!

I'm reading Effective Microorganisms - A New Earth Saving Revolution, and I'm blown away...and also amazed that it's not more discussed/applied by permaculturists (including here on Reddit). Is there something I'm missing? Why is it flying under the radar? What are your experiences and insights into using EM in your set-up? Haven't actually used EM myself, but will do so soon.

After wiping out all bad yeast, now adding Effective Microorganisms for S. cerevisiae

I have had my biome analyzed last year. After months on S. boulardii, the "yeast against yeast," I have a spotless yeast report. It doesn't register as a ""0+" reading, but a non-entry. This means that I have no good yeast either.

I Googled good yeast to add to my system: Research has shown that S. cerevisiae, the strain of yeast in nutritional yeast, can support the immune system and reduce inflammation resulting from bacterial infection.

The best source for S. cerevisiae is Effective Microorgansisms, a toilet-treatment probiotic that I think I will be adding by the tablespoon to my morning smoothie https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effective_microorganism

So what are reactions to purchasing Toilet Bowel Cleaner: https://www.thehydrosource.com/em-1-microbial-inoculant-5-gallon.html for the "good yeast"? I want our community's nod of approval before I add toilet deoderizer to my morning smoothie. "The world's leading probiotic from the '70s has to be taken out of the urinal mint and be added to my smoothie" takes a minute to recover from.
