A list of puns related to "Dynamic soaring"
Following on from I am an explorer and I want an autopilot: am I wrong ?, I happened to see a BBC nature programme today, http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0b0333p (for UK readers, hearing Miles Jupp narrate a nature clips programme is odd). They mentioned the wandering albatross, which can stay at sea for years using dynamic soaring (the BBC version is easier to listen to, but here's the IEEE on it if you can't access it or don't like that they need a login... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMX2wCJga8g ).
I was wondering what a mechanic like this would do for long-range travel. Currently the process is:
Travel speed is determined by jump range, scoop size and your ability to do a repetitive task for hours.
Optionally you can add neutron stars into the mix. This adds a bit of piloting and some resource management (you need to keep an eye on FSD health and worry about whether you can repair it). With default route planning it is maybe 50% faster, the neutron highway plotter can improve that if you're willing to do more menu tabbing.
This results in people wanting to automate the process so they don't actually have to play the game to travel.
What might be interesting would be some increased range mechanic that required more active piloting. Dynamic soaring came on tv while I was thinking about it, and it occurred some sort of pinballing filght model could be and interesting compromise in increasing range. I know people have suggested "mini games" before. I'm generally not a fan of mini games, it often seems they take you out of the actual game to play some a project that someone tacked on (the lock picking one that seemed to appear in most adventure games a while back was particularly annoying), but tying it into the game's main activity (piloting) and making it an alternative to doing a highly repetitive and low-skilled form of that activity might be worthwhile.
The original elite featured jumps as a way to get place to place in a very small galaxy, crossing it was no great achievement. In FE2 and FFE the basic jump mechanic was quite similar to ED, but how it worked out in the game was different: being single player it could be tied directly into travel time (full range jump took a week of game time, meaning missions usually had to be a jump or two range max), fuel scooping was dif

Explanation of Dynamic Soaring for those who donโt know what it is and how it works
Here's the video relating to my question
So I sort of understand how the original "infinite" paper aeroplane loop works, I semi-explained it to myself as being analogous to the way that birds ride thermals up to higher altitudes before gliding down. However, this one, the math doesn't intuitively work out in my head. Not only is the air not being applied directly to the plane, but it's only being applied for a miniscule portion of the plane's arc. Could someone elaborate?
Spoiler Warning!
Edit: Really like how the Pokemon Sub hivemind immediately thinks I'm a shill for Nintendo/Pokemon lmfao if you even knew how much mud I flung at Sw/Sh, LGPE and BDSP you really wouldn't expect a post like this from me.
I'm excited about Legends Arceus because it's finally a genuine positive original change for the Pokemon franchise that is sorely needed. I also see that this post made some people think twice, and that's fine. I made this post more as an information dump because GF/Nintendo have basically showed NOTHING to the general public, and I've had a lot of people assuming this was just another generic Pokemon game.
I get it, GF is incompetent. But unfortunately, they're the ones in charge of the games. If you want actual good change and series growth, you need to support the changes you want to see, and I also think it's really interesting to see how they created PLA using their crappy 3DS engine. It's interesting from a technical standpoint, but it's not like I'm condoning the game's graphics from an artistic standpoint. The fact is PLA is genuinely impressive when you take into the fact that it's running on a modified 3DS engine that wasn't designed to do any of this in the first place. Does that mean it wouldn't be immediately better if it was using a better engine? No. Heck, BDSP used Unity and while the game itself looked very barebones the water shaders in BDSP dwarf GameFreak's attempt at using graphics conventions from way back in the Wii era.
I personally have been burned by GameFreak since USUM when they removed Lusamine's fusion with Nihilego. I still wanted Pokemon Z. I was angry at LGPE because it didn't do enough. BDSP is a broken mess. But I can't help but laugh at the hypocrisy when people get upset at Pokemon for being stagnant and them immediately dismissing the very first time in so many years that Pokemon is finally undergoing major mechanical changes. And hell yeah, I'm going to advocate for that. I'm not saying buy the game, just wanted to let you know why I'm personally excited for it.
We're less than 3 weeks away from Pokรฉmon: Legends Arceus' release, and the majority of this sub seem to not really be as interested in its existence as I would have expected, seeing as this is the Pokรฉmon game that the "Pokรฉmon never tries new things" crowd should really be paying attention to.

So a quick backstory: My FH (30โs M) and I (30โs F) have been together 8 years. We moved a few states over soon after getting together, and our first 5 years were great fun. His family would visit pretty often and fly us (or just him if I had to work) all over for vacations and โvisits. He comes from wealth and I do not, so I thought this was just a part of being in a โsuper closeโ (enmeshed) family in that world. Plus, it was always fun to do these things I wasnโt able to do on my own, so I didnโt question a thing.
We decided eventually to move back closer to our families, but not to the same state. Our plan was to put down some roots, get engaged, etc. His family has ties to the area we moved to, which was helpful with getting us started upon arrival.
As soon as we touched down, FHโs family (nMom, eDad, jnSis) was โin townโ every weekend for months. It put a strain on the relationship, but after a year in our new home and really getting comfortable in our surroundings (and a lot of conversations and disagreements about how our time is being monopolized,) we eventually did get engaged.
This is where things started to become very clearly (to me) dysfunctional. Weekly family plans were continuing to pop up, but we had lots of planning and celebrating to do, and ended up having to have several conversations regarding boundaries with my JNMIL. I even had to have two solo phone calls with her which sent my anxiety soaring.
Everything changed even more after the pandemic began. Our boundaries very literally had to be respected for safety purposes, but that was also a problem for JNMIL (who my therapist advised is a โstone cold narcissistโ.) She would cry, scream, hang up on him, leave random gifts on our stoop, ANYTHING to hear from FH. If we quarantined and saw friends (or just spent time with people in our โpodโ,) it was always up for discussion who is in our pod, why, and if they canโt join, will we please at least stop being so hurtful to sister and let her in our pod (she to this day has not asked once to be in our quarantine pod.) โYouโre going to lose your sister if you two keep treating her like this.โ
Flying monkey SIL didnโt even really seem all that concerned with us, but then all of a sudden she remembered that she has several college friends in our town. Before we know it, the girl has signed a lease less than one mile from the h

I don't think the Tyler plot works, and I don't think the Alex character works, for related reasons. I think both are such significant weak spots they even detract from other characters who come into contact with them. The fact the finale orbits them to such an extent is the only sour note I came away with and for that reason it sticks out.
Firstly, I want to point out outright that Tyler didn't order the suicide bombings, per dialogue in ep 6. So that's not the problem.
The problem is that his vendetta against the airport and Clark feels really badly undercooked. Where other characters are able to speak volumes with only a word, line or gesture, it feels like his plot is genuinely just that basic. He wants revenge on the airport full of old stuff because Mommy & Daddy were distant and Uncle Clark put him on time out.
Basic would be fine if his role was just to generate conflict for other characters to react and adapt to, but itโs not. Instead, from ep 6 on, the main plot starts to push others aside to centre and meditate on him, as if he's much more inherently interesting than he is. At one point Kirsten, who we have been with for twenty years worth of television, is reduced to narrating his OMG angsty life story out loud to him (for us) - when it should be an existential personal revelation for her that she's stumbled into a living relic of her hero Arthur Leander.
Think of how unlikely that is in this world, how big a theme it is for her that she has lost links she had to the people she loved, how much it "matters", as she tells Elizabeth, to get people back even in fractions.
But sadly you'll have to do the thinking, because the show doesn't. The show thinks the story there is how sad Tyler's life is, in a cast with Miranda and Frank in it.
Not only that, K is telling us stuff we figured out episodes ago anyway - as if the show is so proud of this soap opera stroke that it wants to make sure we appreciate it properly.
In The Watch podcast, Patrick Somerville sounds a little puzzled there's confusion over Tylerโs involvement in the suicide bombings. IMHO part of that is that it just seemed like the most interesting thing about him. For all his work to get into the airport, for all the build up, blowing up the Museum comes to nothing apart from attracting the Underse

June 2017: Drafted 15th overall and highly touted almost universally by scouts.
2017-2018: Puts together a solid season in the Swedish league. Plays at the world juniors where he was also impressive. (1+3 in 7gp)
2018-early 2019: Has a solid NHL training camp playing RD. Assigned to AHL where he also plays RD for the Vegas farm team and has a super impressive season as an 18 year old. 28 pts in 41 GP, named to the AHL All-Star game and also had a dominant world juniors (4 goals in 5 games).
Feb 2019: Acquired in the Mark Stone trade, touted as a future top pairing defenseman and key part of the rebuild.
Spring 2019: Ottawa decides the left side is best for his development and says that's where he'll be playing until further notice. He plays 9 games in Belleville where he racks up 4 assists. Also made his NHL debut later in the season. (0pts in 2GP)
2019-2020: Makes the team out of camp and plays an initial 23 games with Ottawa (LD, 2pts) and the reviews are mixed. Gets sent down but called up again two weeks later because of multiple D injuries. He plays a game against Tampa on the right side and has the game of his life:
[Wayne Scanlon - Sportsnet] "The five-foot-nine, 180-pound defenceman was more dynamic and confident, soaring up and down the ice with abandon... THATโs the defenceman the Senators organization was so excited to get in the Mark Stone trade with Vegas at last yearโs deadline."
[Steve Lloyd - TSN] "Letโs never play Brannstrom on the left side again. lol. Different player on his off side."
[Interview with Brannstrom]: Hereโs the thing. Brannstrom has said that he really prefers playing the right side, even though he shoots left. Itโs the side he grew up playing. "Yeah, I didnโt think it would be that different but I played last year the whole year in Chicago (AHL Wolves) and the pre-season with Vegas on the right side, so I kind of like it better, actually," Brannstrom said in a brief interview.
He ends up back on the left side and is eventually sent back down where he finishes the season with Belleville. During his two stints in the AHL he plays the odd game on the right but is still a LD. He puts up respectable numbers (3+20 in 27GP) and logs big minutes.
Fall 2020: Plays in the swiss league while the NHL is still trying to figure out how to have a season. Plays really well by all accounts and puts up a solid 2+6 in 10GP.

Hi All,
Remote contrtol vehicles have long been a source of fascination for people of all ages - starting from the most basic remote control cars which offer endless fun when you're younger, up to the super advanced and sometimes very large planes that enthusiasts race around in the skies or even super boat versions that can master the water, there is so much variety. Today is a chance to look at some of the fascinating records that have come about from these rad little machines.
Fastest RC Car
Nicknamed "The Black Knight" and mimicking the design of the famous landspeed record Bloodhound vehicle, this 2.4 meter rocket powered car was constructed by UK based Tony Lovering and hit a speed of 210.11 miles per hour to set a record back in 2016.
Longest Ramp Jump by an RC Car
This nifty little record was laid down by "The Gadget Show" in the UK during November 2019. A remote controlled model car was able to leap 40.21m and was controlled by Jon Howels. The ramp was 1.5m in length.
Biggest civilian remote control plane
While there is no official record, there are plenty of examples to go by and the largest found is a replica Concorde. It has a wingspan of 4m (13ft), a length of 10m (33ft) and is 1.85m (6.1ft) tall. It is powered by four JetCat P300 Pro engines and cost roughly ยฃ8,000 ($11,000) to create. Flight time is roughly 8 minutes and it actually classifies as a light aircraft according to the regulator.
Quickest RC Boat
In March 2021 a new record was set for the fastest waterborne remote controlled vehicle with a top speed of 206 mph.
Fastest RC Plane
It's hard to decide whether to call this a plane or a missile, but it can be remotely controlled either way! A Turbine Model Jet is the holder of this impressive speed record and is able to hit 451 mph (727kmph).

The first segment of E2, Presence, really started off with a bang! A musical bang! I noticed so many musical features that really brought out the segment even without any dialogue. The segment really hit me as a classical musician and I'll talk about some of the things I noticed in the segment from the orchestra. Before I begin, I'd like you to appreciate that the whole orchestral score is essentially a tone poem. In classical music, a tone poem uses a single musical piece to evoke a scene taking place, whether a painting, a short story, a novel, or any other source. In this case, we have ourselves a tone poem in a short story within a TV show. Now that that's out of the way, let's talk about the music.
Never mind The Great Reset, the real defining theme of the 2020s and beyond is really The Great Convergence, as in 21st century Globalized Capitalist order is converging into the economic reality of old school Socialist countries.
Ask people who remember what life was like behind the Iron Curtain, and the consensus answer isย โwe were stressed out about a lot of things, but money was not one of themโ. And there was a very good reason for that. In socialist countries the trouble was always that people had money but there was hardly anything to buy. Long lines and waitlists were required for essential/desirable products from food to TVs to automobiles.
As it turned out, current day capitalist society has become exactly like that, thanks to pervasive labor and material shortages precipitated by Covid induced seismic shift in the labor market.ย The situation is only going to worsen in the coming years as baby boomers, the largest demographic cohort in American history by far, continue to exit the labor market en mass, a process accelerated by a wave of early retirements and buy-outs during the initial lockdown, which saw 30 million boomers retire at once.
Welcome to the age of ย permanent scarcity, where goods and services are perpetually backlogged. Americans are now reluctantly getting used to the new normal of empty shelves everywhere as supermarkets regularly run out of essential products from cereals to meat and eggs to toilet papers; restaurants having to massively shrink their menu offerings and routinely run out of entrees; and sought after electronics are not only always sold out but also severely backlogged. And God forbid if you need to hire a contractor to do any construction work. All the good contractors/electricians/plumbers are swamped with work and massively backloggedโif they even bother to take on your project at all.
This is the age of scarcity, of labor, of parts and of physical goods and services. ย This is very bad news for the part of the economy that doesnโt have the scarcity factor, namely internet and SaaS stocks, which are already seeing heavy selloff since last year as treasury yield climbed up from the rock bottom. Cloud based products and services are too easy to scale compare to physical ones, and SaaS offerings have little leverage unless combined with a physical component (eg FSD with Tesla vehicle).ย This process will continue in the coming years and will rival the kind of losses that internet stocks e

Thatโs right Survivor fans, Iโm covering a season most people love this time. Considered to be one of the best seasons ever made, Pearl Islands would be Survivorโs seventh outing on the small screen and would introduce some of the most famous (and infamous) contestants in Survivor history. Taking its theming of pirates and thievery, the show truly did everything it possibly could with its setting and story, highlighting the absurdity and propelled by its amazing cast. The season would also introduce one of Survivorโs greatest โvillainsโ, whose legacy would be defined with one of the greatest lies ever told on the show and reality television.
What Is Survivor?
Skip if youโve read any of my last entries or watch the show.
Survivor is a reality television competition where contestants are stranded on a deserted location and compete for a million dollars while living with the bare essentials. Upon arrival, contestants are split up into teams, called tribes, and compete for rewards to improve their living conditions as well as immunity from Tribal Council. The losing contestants must make the trek to Tribal Council to vote someone off their tribe: whoever has the most votes will be eliminated from the game. When about half the cast has been eliminated, the tribes are merged into one and contestants must then compete individually to win immunity. Finally, when only a handful of castaways remain, the contestants who have made it to the merge but were voted off form a jury that chooses which remaining contestant will earn the title of Sole Survivor, winner of the million dollar grand prize.
Each season varies in structure, and there are numerous twists and changes incorporated to switch things up, but Survivor at its core is truly a social game. The winner is usually not the one who wins the most challenges or does the most work at camp (though both of those traits can certainly help), but someone who can form strong bonds with others or at the very least have a story and strategy that the jury is willing to vote for. The people you either worked with, against, or even personally eliminated will likely be responsible for deciding if you or the person sitting next to you will win a million dollars. You need to somehow ensure that when the time comes, they at the very least can accept rewarding you.

First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Athemon (FFO: These guys are hugely original and defy comparison, but I hear elements of Pain of Salvation, Dvne, Tool, Cult of Luna, Boss Keloid, Cynic, Inter Arma, Candlemass, Psychonaut, Omnerod) [Mixed vocals]
An Anglo-Brazilian collaboration between Adriano Ribeiro and ex-Haken bassist Tom MacLean, Athemon reside at the intersection between dynamic prog and traditional doom; imagine if Dvne wrote a Candlemass album, or if Boss Keloid got into gothic prog-doom. The riffs are enormous, the drumming is thunderous and the bass is sublime; but itโs Ribeiroโs mountainous baritone that steals the show. EVERYONE should give these guys a listen. Their self-titled debut is a unique masterpiece, absolutely worthy of AOTY consideration, and itโs available for a name-your-price fee on Bandcamp.

Piano drives the compositions as often as guitar (often acoustic), while strings, synth and brass accompany the tracks, and transcendent sax, guitar and keyboard solos top it all off.
