Poem format:
My land is bare of chattering folk;
the clouds are low along the ridges,
and sweet's the air with curly smoke
from all my burning bridges.
I think Byron Preiss is a wizard and that this is an incredible puzzle.
I'm going to just link the end right here at the beginning as a sort of TL;DR, but it probably won't make much sense without knowing the path that leads there. This puzzle is telling stories, and like all good stories it's the stuff that happens along the way that makes the ending meaningful.
Also, before I start I feel like I need to give credit to the "The Secret, Spirits, And Other Shhh" youtube channel for something they said last year that helped unlock this puzzle for me. Last spring some time they mentioned January being named after Janus and the fact that this is January's poem. He's thematically important to this puzzle because he represents cycles and change and the passage of time. He's often depicted as being bifurcated down the middle and as having two faces, one looking into the future, and another looking back in to the past. His appearance is suggestive of how experience informs our choices going forward, and also hindsight and how what we experience going forward alters how we understand what we thought we once knew. He bridges the past and the future together and exists in the ever changing present. He's about perspective as much as anything.
The knight in the painting also does this for us to some extent, and he too is bifurcated down the middle. What the Knight represents changes over the course of the journey and by the end he will have played several roles. He is our travelling companion, but he's also a little bit like a billboard you might see along the highway too. He gives us hints about what lies ahead, and what he shows you might also change depending what direction you approach him from.
This first part of this solution is really pretty standard compared to other Roanoke solutions, but it diverges beyond a certain point. A lot of these lines have multiple meanings, and those meanings sometimes change depending on where you are in the puzzle. Byron is telling us two stories at the same time during this puzzle, so many of the clues need to work on at least two levels. He also built a trap into this thing, and the solution to the entire puzzle

First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
My Dear Apes,
Isn't it ironic that the biggest thief in Illinois and one of the biggest thieves in the world just bought a rare copy the Constitution of The United States?! I feel like it is equivalent to spitting in the faces of every citizen. Here's is my view on the matter.
According to the United States Senate: "The Constitution's first three wordsβWe the Peopleβaffirm that the government of the United States exists to serve its citizens. For over two centuries the Constitution has remained in force because its framers wisely separated and balanced governmental powers to safeguard the interests of majority rule and minority rights, of liberty and equality, and of the federal and state governments."
We can all attest to the fact that our government, government institutions such as the SEC, and our politicians do not act in the best interests of the people. How are our interests as the majority and our rights being safeguarded when 1% of the population controls the majority of the wealth, when billionaires can buy off politicians to do their bidding, when these same billionaires can get away with paying no taxes and argue that not paying taxes is their reward for their hard work that supposedly benefits society more than the labors of the rest of the population?
"Griffin outbid a coalition of crypto investors, organized under group ConstitutionDAO, who had raised more than $40 million from 17,000 people in the hopes of purchasing the document."
The combined donations of 17,437 people were not enough to overcome the winning bid of one man. Imagine the sense of power Kenny must feel! He thinks that he can have anything he wants. Well, I've got news for you, Kennyboi. You can buy your politicians, you can buy the SEC, you can buy your judges, but you can't have my fucking shares!

So I gave myself a reading challenge based off the 50 states: For each state I'll be reading a work by an author born in said state, a poet (all native Americans poets. I couldn't find poets for a few states tho so I instead went with a native american historical nonfiction for the states I couldn't find), a fiction, a nonfiction, a historical Nonfiction, and a young adult novel. So in total I'll be reading 6 books for each state. It took me a good while to find all the books I wanted for each category but I've finally done it!! That being said, I had the thought that it might be fun to get another category going- suggestions or favorites from everybody on here. So would everybody give me their suggestions of their favorite books set in each state, or just books that you think would fit perfect with this challenge, please and thank you!! I added my list below. It's a long one!

I'm surprised it hasn't decade.
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies π
It really does, I swear!
A lack of cultural sensitivity
did Bailey and I's relationship in
before it was even a relationship.
It happened like this:
I was at an organic farm in the foothills
with a small group of committed volunteers
and we were waiting for Bailey and waiting for Bailey and waiting for Bailey,
and finally I cracked a joke about the night before,
about how much she had been drinking.
I said she was probably too hung over for planting.
The joke quickly got back to her, and she was tornado mad
mostly because I made this direct reference
to her acting like a college student
in front of adults, the owners of the farm,
and I guess she wasn't used to grown pringles like that
being made aware of 19 year olds
in America
drinking on college campuses on a Friday night.
I guess you don't acknowledge obvious realities in polite Nebraska,
but like Dorothy,
Bailey wasn't in Nebraska anymore.
She was on my turf, our turf,
a place where 14 year olds
get tossed "a late one" by their uncles and second cousins
as they recieve important life lessons
on how to fully appreciate the Immaculate Reception,
Roberto Clemente,
the taxidermy of Andy Warhol,
and the Zen and Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.
I probably should have sucked it up, apologized,
and watched my trap in the future.
Bailey was that special.
Instead, my pride got the better of me
and I told her to ret up her gutchies
and stop being a fire bush o' jaggers.
This made as much sense to her as it likely made to you,
which is the art and carnival
of burning a bridge.
Just speak your own dialect and norms
with no regard
for the person of a different whiteness culture.
Because she wanted to see the task manager.
A number of early 20th century English mystery novels, particularly those of Agatha Christie and Dorothy L Sayers make references to the game of contract bridge. In some cases, bridge is central to the solution of the mystery (example: AC's Cards on the Table). Most characters in these books play bridge as a pastime. This seems surprising because bridge isn't a trivial game to learn.
Were the rules of the game really common knowledge in early 20th century English society, or are these authors projecting their own interests on to their characters?
Heard they've been doing some shady business.
BamBOO!
Theyβre on standbi
Pilot on me!!
Christopher Walken
Nothing, he was gladiator.
Or would that be too forward thinking?
Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.
This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.
If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.
Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
but then I remembered it was ground this morning.
Edit: Thank you guys for the awards, they're much nicer than the cardboard sleeve I've been using and reassures me my jokes aren't stale
Edit 2: I have already been made aware that Men In Black 3 has told a version of this joke before. If the joke is not new to you, please enjoy any of the single origin puns in the comments
What did 0 say to 8 ?
" Nice Belt "
So What did 3 say to 8 ?
" Hey, you two stop making out "
When I got home, they were still there.
I won't be doing that today!
