Hi folks, went to an Rolex AD with the wife for a milestone anniversary gift. The budget was in the $15k CAD range ($12k USD) but the AD had limited choice. Instead, they had a beautiful Datejust 36 with olive green dial, jubilee bracelet and diamonds in the bezel. Price was $24k CAD ($19k USD). It’s quite a timepiece and while glitzier than we were thinking and higher than the budget, we are considering it.

Questions:

• Are prices negotiable at all or essentially take it or leave it? Other ADs will likely not have the same timepiece so comparison shopping seems pointless.

• I’ve heard a Rolex will hold its value but how true is this? We are buying as an anniversary gift but also hope to pass this along to kids as a family heirloom. Is it silly to think of the watch as an “investment”?

• The AD claimed the olive green dial was highly desirable. He also said they had another customer interested in it and the watch wouldn’t be available by next week. I’m sure the latter is a bit of pressure tactic (although he wasn’t pushy at all) but how true is the former statement about the olive green colour?

• Anything else we should ask or consider? This is a first Rolex and expensive timepiece purchase for us so want to do our research as much as possible.
