A list of puns related to "DSL modem"
Trying to help a friend with Frontier DSL with his network setup.
Right now he has the Frontier provided modem and wifi. Looking to replace with a better Modem and setup he would buy for gaming and netflix. In his area they only have like 30mbps speed.
Figured he may be better off buying rather then renting their generic modem/ wif combo.
Thanks in adance.
Hi guys, I'm not that educated when it comes to networking, I don't have a good grasp on what certain things do (MAC address and stuff) but I know the casual basics.
I have a TG789vac V2 modem/router from iiNet (Australia) and I have it connected to the VDSL line of the house as I receive FTTN. We previously had FTTP so I've not had this problem before.
My end goal is to have my D-Link DIR-878 as the wireless access point as it is much stronger and faster. However, when I connect an ethernet cable from the LAN port on the TG to the WAN port of the 878 the internet light stays orange and says its detected internet yet can't connect.
I'm guessing I need to configure some settings but I've looked up tutorials here, youtube, and google and nothing has worked for me. Please help!
We are currently using a few 60E-DSLs at some non-fibre customer locations across Australia. However, as the chipset for these lack SRA functionality, they are not officially supported by the NBN network for FTTN, and NBN are now telling me that they will experience service degradation from Feb 28th.
Anyone have a recommendation for a good VDSL2 modem that I can bridge into the existing 60Es if the services do begin to degrade? Our experience with some of the consumer models previously was.. poor.. to say the least.
Fibre build isn't reasonable for many of these customers unfortunately.
is there a way to monitor your network connection from the line side of your modem (between cab and modem),and be able to display PPPoE frames or whatever on wireshark?
Can a DSL or cable wire between my modem and the ISP be manipulated in any way at the hardware level to sniff the traffic data? For example by neighbours with physical access to the wires in a big appartment complex, a previous renter or a landlord?
So would it for any 3rd party be possible to access data from either a DSL or a cable line if they had access to it? If so, how would they do it, what information could they get and how could i prevent it?
I'm asking specifically about private bad actors, not the ISP itself or government levels.
Iβve looked at amazon, walmart, Best Buy and 90% of the modems are for cable and the few dsl modems look old and come from shady 3rd party vendors. My parents are getting some kind of radio frequency internet from a dish on the local water tower and the company doesnβt provide a modem. Their ad just says provide your own wireless router.
Update: found out that itβs wireless internet, they beam the interwebs from the top of a water tower to a tower on top of your house. So all you need is a router inside.
Hello folks,
as the title suggests, I am looking for a DSL router/modem combo that is compatible with pfsense and also capable of running it. I have been looking for hours but sadly haven't found a thing. Is anyone of you aware of such a thing? Is this even a thing? Or am I looking for something that doesn't exist?
Thank you in advance!
I've switch to teksavvy cable, and i want to resell my modem which i did rent to own on. Can i sell this modem to someone? They're asking me if it's 'locked' but i'm not sure what that even means.
Personal Router: tp-link wifi 6 AX1800
I'm sure the issue is the double NAT but I feel that I am missing some other way to fix this
Recently I factory reset my modem and router and ever since, I've been unable to do any sort of multiplayer gaming on console. Small arena shooters experience terrible lag and as for MMOs, I'm completely unable to connect to the servers for any more than 10 seconds before immediately being disconnected, anything else like youtube/netflix/etc works, but with random spikes of poor/dropped connection.
The issue is likely the double NAT that I am being notified of, but thats the thing, when I first set up my router and modem, I don't remember having to deal with that. I remember during setup of the AX1800, it suggested that I simply disable the modem's wireless capabilities to prevent any connection errors and that worked flawlessly for months...until I reset the modem.
Now, regardless of the modem's wireless capabilities being on or off, I get the same poor connection and the double NAT notifications.
I have also tried setting the router to Access Point mode but I get the same connection issues, however I think thats due to the AX1800 not being capable of using its 5ghz radio in AP mode. Also, some options disappear when AP mode is active and I know I've always seen them before so I'm sure that's not what I originally did.
I also noticed IP passthrough, but looking at the instructions my ISP provides online, Im certain I didn't do this either.
I did try setting the modem to bridge mode, but that disabled my internet entirely and I had to factory reset it again. It seems I'd have to get the PPPoE information from my isp and set up the AX1800 with it, but I definitely did not do that before.
I am willing to just contact the ISP and set up Bridge mode but what on Earth was it that I had going on before this? I've searched but I haven't found any solutions besides these 3. if anyone has dealt with this before or knows of a simpler solution I'm missing, I'd greatly appreciate the help
So I had an old modem/router unit lying around that I decided to use as an AP for the new modem/router I have. Everything seemed to work fine until my phone disconnected.
After that, I couldn't reconnect no matter how long I waited or even when I restarted the phone. I would always get a 'Failed to Obtain IP Address' issue.
So I assumed that it was an issue with the main modem/router not assigning the IP address correctly. So I unplugged the ethernet from old unit, and had my phone connect to it despite having no internet. That worked. Then I replug the ethernet cable back in, and then magically the active router would assign an IP and I would get internet connectivity.
Obviously, I can't do this process each and every time I get disconnected.
Anyone know what could be causing this and is there a fix? thank you!
Is the short list of Optimum compatible modems on DSLreports complete and up-to-date?
https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r32288155-SHORT-list-of-Bring-Your-Own-Modem-info
There is no mention of the Arris S33 or Netgear CM2000. As Arris and Netgear appear to have the most Optimum-friendly devices, are these newer modems not compatible or have they just not made the list yet?
Also, I see the Motorola MB8600 was delisted in May 2021. Are Motorola (Zoom) modems still problematic to provision? How about the new MB8611?
I have an Ubiquiti mesh wifi system and would like to not rent the Centurylink modem/router combo. I don't need the extra precious metals and figured a modem-only would be cheaper. I cannot find a plain old modem to buy that is compatible with the newer DSL signal types except for some Cisco routers for $400+.
Any ideas what's going on?
Some info: Our speeds are 40 down/3 up and we have tested with both a C3000Z and C3000A. Modem is transparent bridged to our R7000 running advanced tomato. Happens when using the modem as our router too. No phone service, only internet. When I say drops, I mean like down to 15mbps. Modem will usually retrain dozens of times after too, causing the connection to repeatably cut out.
I'm trying to debug this issue for my parents. This has been happening for a few months now and every time centurylink sends a tech out our line is fine when tested at the network box. Which makes this... difficult, but also gave us a temporary solution.
When it happens, the only way to restore our speeds is to either wait a week or two for it to magically fix itself, or plug in the modem at the network box.
To help with this, since we are already transparent bridging, we are now running cat6 ethernet 40ft from the modem NOW connected right near the network box, to the router, avoiding using our house's internal wiring (minus the 2ft or so entering from outside in).
I see on the loop qualification link (posted all over this subreddit) the following message for our address... > The WACNMNAOH03-WACN remote terminal is temporarily out of broadband service capacity. The tentative date for additional capacity is UNKNOWN. For customers who wish to place a pending request, you may issue a held order and the service will be installed when capacity is available.
Could this be why? Our neighborhood keeps bobbing over capacity and thus the lines are unstable? Or is there something else going on?
I find it weird how replugging in at/near the box usually restores the speeds and apparent line quality (sometimes only for a few hours). Like why can't it just stay at those speeds, why do I have to manually intervene?
Thank you! Any answers would be great.
Summary: I can't get my C4000LG Centurylink modem (which is attached to a line that is configured for static IP using IPoE) to stay up in Transparent Gateway mode. The line worked for years with a different modem. Is there a trick to this? Has anyone gotten this to work?
Long post:
Sorry about the empty post. I have a DSL line that has worked for years. It is configured with 4 static IP addresses and uses IPoE. I had been running a zyxel modem of ancient vintage, and behind that I had a switch and multiple routers...this allowed my wife to have an isolated network when she worked from home. Also, we have poor propagation through the house, we solved this with linksys mesh routers. The point is that I would really prefer to use my own routers and to just use the centurylink equipment as a dsl-ethernet converter.
Recently we had a lightning strike near my house. The landline phone is fine but the zyxel modem is likely fried. It would not connect to the dsl signal at all post storm.
I called Centurylink and they gave me a dispatch date 11 days out. We have no cell service here without internet, and no broadcast TV (I live way out in the country), so we were facing isolation. I was driving down the road and there was a centurylink repair truck there. I recognized the guy as someone who works on data locally so I stopped to talk to him. He gave me the C4000, told me to return the dead modem when the dispatch happened.
I could not figure out how to configure the stupid modem. The help screens in the modem pointed me to non-existent configuration screens. After about 2 hours on the phone, they put me through to a level 2 person. My best guess is that there used to be only one way to have a static IP. Now you can have one with PPPoE or IPoE. The internal help screens didn't account for this. In my case, I configure IPoE, then select static and then put in the gateway and net mask. So now I am running after a fashion, I have been on the phone for hours, I'm exhausted. I have internet up using the default SSID and none of my regular stuff works but at least I'm connected. The guy from level 2 says, if you want to run in transparent mode, just select it.
So, today, I'm ready to flip the modem to transparent mode. The device seems to have been working for days. I can watch TV, use my playstation for shooter games. I get an old laptop out that has an ethernet port. I connect the laptop to port 1 of the ethernet bank, and configure the modem. All I do

I've been looking around retail stores and everybody has plenty of cable modems but not a single person has any DSL or a DSL modems or modem router combo.
I realize DSL is kind of old and sucks but there are whole service providers based off their Tech you think there would be some options. So where the hell have all the DSL modems gone?
Hello,
Since I have upgraded my internet plan to 40mb/s with my ISP, I have received a Zyxel VMG-4825 router/modem combo, which has given a fair share of connectivity issues when it comes to online gaming with Steam. Since this upgrade, I've found that server browsers for Steam games have strange behavior, and unless my pings/min is set to 200, which is unbearably slow, the modem/router refuses to load any servers after a certain threshold (after about 1000 - 1200 servers have been pinged). Furthermore, downloading games and updates from steam servers has unpredictable behavior: I often experience long pauses without any network activity. I've tried many things without purchasing new hardware to try to fix the issue, including disabling uPnP and the modem's firewall, but to no avail. I've come to the conclusion that the hardware itself probably cannot physically handle that magnitude of pings/min without overloading somehow, and I believe I might need new hardware to fix the issue. The problem is, with the location I live my internet connection is over DSL, and finding a different DSL Modem/router has proven very difficult. The last solution I came upon online was to set the modem from my ISP into bridge mode, which as per what I've read should disable DHCP and any routing, and using a separate router to handle my home's traffic. I've also contacted my ISP several times but they never seem to fully understand my problem and think I'm having either a complete loss of internet connection or that I want an increase in speed, neither of which is true. I'm not very knowledgable about this process, but with any experience any of you have had could this be a viable solution to my problem? May the issue persist because the modem will be the same, or could a new router connected with the modem's bridge mode help? Any help at all to fix this issue is much appreciated!
Edit: I have also read the Steam pages on Using a Router with Steam and Unpredictable Server Browser behavior. On that first page I can't find options in my router's configuration for stateful inspection or dynamic packet filtering. On the latter, the paragraph under Router Problem is a near perfect description of my issue: "packet loss with high traffic, such as when a large number of servers are responding during a server browser refresh. A symptom of this is start

Will the technician be able to set up my DSL without having a modem? I know I won't be able to connect to the internet without it - I'm just wondering if I can hold off on buying the modem for a day or two.
Need help configuring a modem to use bridge mode so i can use my own router. Consolidated tech support is useless as they either dont know or more that likely dont want their customers to know what the correct settings are. They have told me all i would need is my pppoe username and password for the new modem I am buying (because they wont give me a stand alone modem), but there are several other setting that need to be correct for it to work. I am getting a ZyXEL VMG4005-B50B Vdsl2 Pair-Bonding Modem and from what i can find it will need settings specific to consolidated bonded connection. Anyone out there with any knowledge of these settings?? I think all i need is the correct wan adsl or vdsl settings.
I just got 1und1 and it is 250mbits.
I need a DSL modem and tried to find one on amazon.de so I could get it ordered... and I have no idea which one to get!
Can anyone recommend a good one? I dont need it to have Wifi, I have wireless access points already. It just needs to do the DSL modem functionality.
Thanks!
Hey,
I own a TP-LINK Archer VR900 and I bought a new router and I just need the modem functionality of my TP-Link now, so that my new router can connect to it. The operation modes on my VR900 don't include "modem only", but only "DSL Modem Router", so I wonder, will it work to use it solely as a modem, or do I need to buy a another modem / router-modem that can function solely as a modem? Thanks.
My weekend rural house only option for internet is DSL. We have Century Link which provides semi reliable 20 mbps up and 2 mbps down. It's an Actiontec C1900a modem/router combo that seems to be loosing its wifi capability or at least range. If your not within 20 feet of it you can barely connect.
I read that I could put the modem in "Transparent Bridging Mode" and then use my own router. So while I realize nearly any router will work, I want to get a good one with good range. Most of the ones on Amazon brag about how many MBPS that they can deliver. Any recommendations for a dual band router with good range.
Hallo r/de_EDV
I'm replacing my company-provided cable modem with my own. The cable company told me that it needs to be a DOCSIS 3.1 "DSL Fiber" cable modem. Isn't that a non sequitur? Isn't it's DSL or Cable or Fiber?
As far as I know, there's not fiber in this area, and the connection to the modem is 100% RG-6 coax.
Hye guys so as per my previous problem of moving house and needing to get a modem router for my new internet connection, ive bought myself an asus dsl-ac55u modem router. I got it on sale and read good reviews for it. My issue is that i use an occulus quest 2 quite a bit and so does the family. I used to have it going to my old router an rt-ax88u which is a beefy wifi 6 router. Is there any way i can use the 55u as the modem and connect my and other wifi stuff to the 88u and then connect the 88u to the 55u?
Im quite novice when it comes to home network stuff, someone told me to bridge the connection but going through the different menus in the 55u i cant seem to find anything for bridging, maybe im just missing it?
When fibre/broadband came out you were forced to connect your WiFi router to a separate modem. Then not long after that, WiFi router companies started bringing out their devices with built in modems like the BT HomeHubs. Now they no longer make their devices with built in modems forcing you to search for old out of date, second hand modems to connect the latest routers to the internet.
I just bought a TP-Link router that is advertised for Fibre/Broadband only to find out that it doesn't have a modem.
I searched and searched for routers with DSL modem built in only to find everything is old tech and not even listed on the companies website anymore. I found some of them listed for over Β£200.
My soon to be former service provider has left me sitting for a week with no internet service after the modem failed. And they don't seem to be in any hurry to replace it. So I want to see if I can buy a replacement until my new fiber service gets installed.
I have someone coming tomorrow to setup DSL for me. I chose to go with my own modem, but I haven't had to time to go buy it yet.
Will the technician be able to set up my DSL without having a modem? I know I won't be able to connect to the internet without it - I'm just wondering if I can hold off on buying the modem for a day or two.
