Data storage options for minimalist computer geeks

For those of you looking for some long term solution, I'd like to share from my own experience.

  1. My data consists mostly of photos and audio files, there is also a sizeable ebook-library and some documents. All in all less then 100Gb, still too valuable to lose for some stupid reason
  2. I used to have a desktop PC, a laptop and an external HDD. I kept all my data on the PC, backed them up to the external drive, some of the files also on the laptop. No specialized backup software or something, just simple copy/rsync. Worked pretty well for me for many years, I had several data losses on the PC, all successfully recovered
  3. Once I decided to get rid of the desktop PC, i already had an iPhone that also held some of my data. That was backed up on the laptop and I thought about something more hightec than an external HDD, thus opted for a hardware NAS. Got the one from Synology with two mirrored 2Tb HDDs. Used for couple of years without any issues, then realized that all my data takes only about 2% of the available storage and although the NAS has its own web based extranet and iPhone apps and whatnot, I wrote couple of scripts to rsync incoming files from the OneDrive
  4. Then for couple of months I needed MS Office at home and subscribed to Microsoft 365 (7 Euro per month), which also gave me 1 Tb of OneDrive space. Also Apple's iCloud+ with 50Gb costs only 1 Eur per month. I thought it's actually a good idea to get rid of the NAS and move all my stuff to the cloud, going back to the external drives for backups. Considering NAS costing about 700 Euro, it's about 10 years worth of cloud subscriptions. Money-wise a good deal. Reliability... well, it worked so far. I trust Microsoft with the safety of my data more than my own hardware. Less so with privacy, but I surely can implement some solution for this
  5. My current plan is to subscribe to both Apple and Microsoft, keeping my photos and notes on the iCloud, the rest on the OneDrive. Would also think about some sort of symmetric encryption but tbh don't know what files are really worth the hassle

Some side thoughts:

  1. Industrial data centers are more energy efficient and sustainable solution for general public than running own hardware, if you're concerned about environment etc.
  2. Visual content creators need much more space, for them the cloud isn't a viable solution
  3. There are specialized hosting solutions like GitHub for code projects for example
  4. Mindless data hoarding is as bad as any hoardi

SLPT: If you are running low on storage on your computer or phone, simply write down all the binary data (the 1s and 0s) onto a notebook and then delete that stuff on your device. Then, whenever you need to access the data, simply copy the code back onto your device and boom you have free storage.

any tips on how to do computer data storage properly?

hi, i have an imac (pro) with a 1tb ssd drive that can't be upgraded, and the amount of free space ain't what it used to be. unfortunately i never had any formal instruction on how to manage storage efficiently, and i'm not sure where to start.. this is further complicated with each new plugin/vst/app etc i install, as all the components are sent to different locations, and then the uninstallation process is different (sometimes very confusing/impossible) for each thing. Any tips on how to get things organized? Should I be storing things on external drives? If so, what should go where? And what type of connection? I'd like to check out things like Superior drummer 3 but again the storage issue has me hesitant. thnx for any help!

Micron Technology $MU stock overview and the analysts' forecasted price (computer memory and data storage)

Micron Technology is an American producer of computer memory and computer data storage including dynamic random-access memory, flash memory, and USB flash drives. Its consumer products are marketed under the brands Crucial and Ballistix. Micron and Intel together created IM Flash Technologies, which produces NAND flash memory.Β Their current market cap isΒ $88.97 billion.

Micron remains firmly positioned in a memory market as more products require chips that are experiencing a shortage right now. Many see the company's situation as a big reason why you should be buying their shares.Β The shortage could particularly benefit Micron in the DRAM memory market, where South Korean chipmakers Samsung and SK Hynix are its only competitors. DRAM made up about 68% of Micron's revenue in 2020. Additionally, the company claimed about 23% of the global DRAM market.Β The NAND sector is a bit more diversified thanks to the presence of Western Digital and its SanDisk subsidiary. However,Β Micron is one of the largest suppliers in this segment as well.

Micron's earnings for the first quarter of 2021 showed little difference from what the analysts were expecting.Β They reported earnings per share of $0.98, which is 3 cents more than the consensus estimate. They reported a slight beat of revenue estimates as well. Their Q1 2021 revenue came in at $6.24 billion compared to the estimated $6.23 billion.Β Their next earnings report is scheduled for Jun 30, 2021.

Analysts from Deutsche BankΒ estimate Micron's stock to reachΒ $110 in the next 12 months. The analysts atΒ Wells FargoΒ also have high expectations for this stock with a price target ofΒ $115. Out of 24Β analysts, 18Β haveΒ given Micron a BUY rating and 6 a HOLD rating.

YSK If you are discarding or giving away a computer storage device , remember to securely erase it . Data on the drives can be recovered after deletion unless a low level format/ secure erase is performed .

Modern drives do not actually delete the data when you delete a file . They just make it invisible to the end user and make the space available for future writes. Only when some other data is written or a secure erase is performed , the drive actually loses the original data . This is why data recovery softwares work when you accidentally delete a file .
