"Team Manitoba is down 4-1, but Ehlers is our vaccine. "
Hi All,
The competitive spirit is strong in the heart of every sportsperson and fighting until the end can really pay off. There are many times in history where the tide has turned in favor of the side that has been able to persevere for the longest and today is time to highlight some of that brilliant spirit in the athletic arena. This is only a small snapshot however there are far too many to list!
The America's Cup - 2013 Oracle Team USA
One of the most impressive comebacks ever, in 2013 there was a 19 event calendar (usually 17) and this sailing team was down 8-1. They managed to turn it around and win the competition with 9 consecutive race wins.
NBA Finals - 2008 Boston Celtics
The LA Lakers were well ahead in this game with a 35-14 lead, but the Boston Celtics valiantly fought back with a 21-3 run to snatch victory and win the game. They ultimately won the NBA title in seven games.
NHL Eastern Conference Semifinal - 2010 Philadelphia Flyers
There were 7 games overall up for grabs and they were 3-0 down, but in a triumphant reversal of fortune they battled their way back with 3 consecutive wins. It looked very tense in the final deciding game when they fell 3 goals behind within the first period. They managed to turn it around and ended the game 4-3 in order to take the series win.
British Open - 1999 Paul Lawrie
It looked like the game was decided, Paul Lawrie was 10 strokes behind on the final round. Except some extremely sloppy play by Van de Velde on the 18th hole turned into a triple-bogey, ultimately losing his first position slot and resulting in second place.
Olympic 10,000m Final - 1972 Lasse Viren
A relatively unknown runner, took a stumble around the half way mark and fell to the floor. He got back up and not only took first place in the race, but also set a new world record of 27 min, 38.4 seconds. Then going on to win a 5,000m race ten days later.
Ireland vs All Blacks - 2013 End of Year Tour
The Irish Rugby team managed to smash their way ahead with a 19-0 lead, however the ferocious All Blacks were able to dig deep and recover to end the game with a 24-22 win.
