Previous thread got too large, that can be found here: https://old.reddit.com/r/canadaguns/comments/gbjyuz/canada_gazette_part_2_volume_154_number_3/

There is simply too much similar posts and questions all relating to this one topic and document for this sub to handle, so we will continue to concentrate discussion of it onto this megathread.

Please keep it civil and on topic, a reminder that any comment breaking the Rules of the Subreddit may result in an immediate ban. Please use the report function if any comments are breaking the rules.

Here is the link to the text of the new ban: Canada Gazette, Part 2, Volume 154, Number 3: Regulations Amending the Regulations Prescribing Certain Firearms and Other Weapons, Components and Parts of Weapons, Accessories, Cartridge Magazines, Ammunition and Projectiles as Prohibited, Restricted or Non-Restricted

There is a separate thread here centered more around Canadian Firearm's organization's response to the ban announcement, statements, etc. May have information you will find useful. https://www.reddit.com/r/canadaguns/comments/gchh2t/list_of_canadian_firearms_advocacy_groups_post/

Today I learned about Charles Newton, U.S. lawyer and firearms inventor. Never wholly successful in his own time, he nevertheless created several innovations still in use today. Most of the rifles he produced used proprietary cartridges that other manufacturers later modified. (.25-06, for example.) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaโ€ฆ

Why are some firearm cartridges measured by their measurements (9x19mm, 5.56x45mm) and some are measured by their caliber? (.45 ACP, .308) Also, why are they so precise? 7.62mm? Why the .02? Is that 1/100th of a mm the result of years of precise ballistics testing?

The one issue I have with Tachanka's new gadget is it fires semi-automatically and the base gun (Mosin Nagant) is a bolt-action. It even uses real ammunition (blanks, probably) and ejects the cartridge. I know that this is really nit-picky, but as a firearm enthusiast and owner, it kinda bothers me.

House Democrats propose "Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act" limiting firearm magazine capacity to 10 cartridges... What is the rationale behind this? What is the logic for such a ban?

I only ask because there appears to be no empirical data to support that 10 rounds is effective at stopping crime or limiting harm in school shootings like Newton, CT.

Even the report written by the commission investigating the Virginia Tech Shooting admitted that such a limitation would accomplish nothing (pg.87)...

So why bother?

What if the concept of firearm cartridges were developed earlier?

In firearms history humanity spent about 200 years using breech loaders and black powder, meaning someone poured powder down the barrel of a gun, tamped it down, inserted the bullet or ball and tamped it down. On the battlefield it took people an average of 4-6 minutes to reload. Then around the 1850's the modern bullet shape appeared, and individualized pre-packaged paper containers of powder cutting the reloading time in half, (2-3 minutes). Finally, in 1882 the copper-jacketed bullet is invented.

How does warfare change if the individualized pre-packaged paper containers of powder were invented earlier, say the 30 years war?
