Support for this CPU was added very late in the motherboard's lifetime; it's only available in a beta BIOS. I can sometimes get APM working for a while after clearing BIOS settings, but sooner or later it ends up disabled even when set to enabled. When that happens, the multiplier gets stuck at 33x. (I don't know if this is directly caused by APM being disabled or if there's some underlying problem that leads to the CPU multiplier being stuck and APM being disabled. Guessing the former, but trying to keep an open mind.)
Does anyone have any troubleshooting suggestions other than wiping BIOS settings every so often? Thanks.
Windows OS capping my CPU multiplier to 11x limiting speed to 2ghz. I've reset the BIOS, and reinstalled Windows 10, Linux goes at full speed no issues.
Hope that somebody can figure this out, I've had no luck and the reinstall was my last hope for fixing it myself. Thanks in advance.

So recently I had an issue with my Alienware M15 R3 where the CPU clock speed sits at 4100 mhz (x42 multipler) and stays there, no matter what. It caused temperature and performance issues so I went into BIOS and disabled intel speedstep and intel speedshift. All is well, the temperature issue is gone and my PC sits at a good x26 clock multipler. But now, the clock speed does not change when i overclock, benchmark or anything. Here is my benchmark result and CPU-Z stats. Am I being stupid and that clock speed was not supposed to change to begin with, or is something up?

First off all I want to say I pretty much don't know anything about OC.
I own an older build and currently can't afford a better one.

I'm guessing my CPU is kinda a bottleneck even for that GPU.
My cheap SSD got corrupted couple days ago and I replaced it with Samsung SATA SSD 870 EVO 250GB and installed fresh win 10.
I also bought some thermal paste and applied it after removing the old.
So i wanted to get a better performance on some games which use CPU like CSGO and alike.
I went into te BIOS and only thing I did was change the CPU multiplier so that my CPU was running on 3,3GHz instead of 2,8 GHz. I didn't want to bother with anything else so I left it on auto.
I ran a OCCT Bechmark for an hor and my CPU didn't go past 83ยฐ.
CSGO performance did increase on average by 20%.
But since then I have YT image freezing on chrome and opera, on microsoft edge it's still fine. Sound doesn't cut out and PC still works normally.
I would like to keep my CPU at 3,3 GHz but does anyone have an idea why is this happening?
Do you have any tips for "overclocking" and should I be more careful? I didn't mess with BCKL freq. and other stuff since it's and old rig and I don't want to ruin it. I think it's on 150 now.

If what I said in the title is correct then I am very confused because I can go down.
I am currently running my 2600X at 3.14ghz with my gigabyte a320m-h rev 1 with the latest bios (F53).
Windows picks up my settings just fine and sets me to 4.2ghz at 1.4v under high load.
With apm -A it never goes higher than 3.3ghz, and running apm -H locks me to my standard 3.3ghz at 1.24v.

I have tried a variety of OC setting with similar results, but for now I've gone back to default and only changed the following
multi core enhancement Disabled
Manual OC All Core ration 51 (for 5.1 Ghz )
Vcore 1.38v
And when I run AIDA64's Stress test CPU Only it runs at 5.1ghz and shows 1.385v
but if I add Cache, or memoery the cpu multiplier and speed start chaning, droping to x46 4.6ghz.
I've also tried turning off Speed-Step, Speed-shift and C-state but it didn't seem to matter. Also if I turn off turbo the OC settings don't seem to have any impact and the cpu just runs at 4.1ghz. Anyway I'm mainly trying to figure out why the when I add in the Cache or mem stress tests the CPU speed starts dropping/the multiplier goes down.
Anything thoughts? Could it be because I'm running on intergrated graphics atm?
I have R7 2700X CPU running on 4200MHz and few days ago I've notice my clock speed drops every time I start PUBG. The multiplier drops from 42x to 38x. My temps are around 45-50ยฐC while running PUBG, and the CPU utilization is around 30%.
If I start any other game or Cinebench (to stress test my CPU to 100%) the clock speed stays normal, so I've come to conclusion it has to be something with the game/anti cheat.
Any suggestions or ideas?

I have an Acer Spin 5 laptop. I'm currently reinstalling windows on it but that isn't working because it's been installing for 2 hours now... My CPU multiplier is stuck at 4. Every core runs at 400MHz at boot it goes up to 34 (3.4GHz) for a really short moment and then it just drops to 4 and it's never coming up again.
I reset my bios settings to factory defaults as well to no avail. I checked my power settings and put the CPU minimum to 100% also no avail. Power saving isn't it either, the battery isn't the best anymore but it still more than okay.
I'm starting to think something in the hardware broke. Anyone has any ideas on what to do?

I'm using the MSI B450M DS3H with the Ryzen 5 1600 and have been trying to overclock it for a while now. I know what I need to do but everything I need is greyed out. I've tried circumvent it with ryzen master and easy overclock but those never save after a restart. Any help is appreciated and I'll provide what I can if you need.
I have a fairly old FX-8350 nestled in an Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z motherboard. It's starting to show its age in newer games, so I'm trying to squeeze a little more power out of it by overclocking. The thing is, despite being a Black Edition processor and having an unlocked multiplier, I can't get it power on with any value other than the default 20x. Up to 21x, down to 19x, no POST, just a solid red LED next to the CPU. Not even an error code on the fancy Q Code display, just "00". Anyone seen anything like this before?
Note: I was able to overclock it by increasing the bus speed, and it runs stable up to 220 MHz (4.4 GHz) without adjusting any other settings in the BIOS. But I'm lazy and I don't want to start tweaking RAM timings and other settings to push the bus speed higher if I don't have to. I just want to bump up the multiplier, give it some voltage and let it run.
I looked at /sys, but I didn't find both.
I can do the multiplier calc myself, but, for that, I need to get the current base clock, which fluctuates from 99,00MHz to 100MHz. Some third party tools call it "clock" or "external clock"
There no feasible solution for someone that doesn't know how to handle deep stuff like MSR register. I end up using the nominal base clock of 100MHz.
Are there any drawbacks to simply just increasing the CPU multiplier in BIOS and test how the CPU is performing? Does it have to be more complicated than that? I am not after pushing my CPU to its limits I just want it to perform a bit better, at the moment.

I updated several days ago and today I had some very weird issues (in general just being extremely slow after ~30 minutes) and couldn't diagnose any issue. CPU and RAM usage was fine. But what I did notice was that the CPU speed wasn't going down as it normally was. It was locked to 4.35 GHz (according to AIDA64 a CPU Multiplier of 44x).
After reverting back to 1909 (thankfully the feature to revert to a previous version wasn't greyed out) the CPU multiplier happily jumps according to actual usage.
I just wanted to ask here if this is a known problem (I couldn't find anything with a quick google search for Update 2004, found the inverse (underclocking) from 2008 though)

No my CPU isn't overclocked, it's a normal i7-8700k
No I'm not sure if my slowness issues were fixed with the revert (I only just did that), but my gut feeling is that it is linked to the multiplier issue
EDIT: Just found out that my father's laptop also seems to have this issue, for him it's stuck at 34x and not moving from there.
I just got into overclocking in the last week so forgive my ignorance. I've read a ton of articles, and I'm confused by one part of the process. All the guides recommend that you iterate the CPU multiplier and voltage temps in small increments, check temps under load, and then check stability. Overclocking requires patience, but this seems to be excessively long.
If the temps are (primarily?) related to voltage, then why don't you increase the voltage first to the point where temps are within limits, THEN increase the CPU multiplier to its highest stable point? It seems to me that this would drastically shorten the process because you'd have your temps under control first, then you could focus on stability.
To reiterate, the process would look something like this:
Increase voltage incrementally until temps are maintaining just under 80 degrees under load (e.g., Prime95 Small FFT). This is now your max safe voltage.
Increase CPU multiplier incrementally. Keep an eye on temps. Check stability under load (e.g., Prime95 blended test).
Once stable, see if you can drop voltage a bit without compromising stability. Otherwise, return to voltage from step 2.
I assume that it's because they're related somehow, but I'm not quite getting it yet.

I was wrong about the 80 degree target in step 1. Increasing to max temp is dumb because increasing the clock will increase heat too. Maybe 65-70 degrees would be better?
I still think that increasing voltage by some amount first has to be valuable unless you want to spend 80 hours overclocking. Maybe I'm just too impatient, but moving up 100 MHz and .005 V at a time is just ridiculous given my experience with this particular machine and how far I had to go to bump it up from 3.4 to 4.4 GHz.
I have seen some posts about slight overclocking non k cpus and i have an i5 7400 and i want to overclock it I tried following their steps but i cant see anything in the bios about Bclk i did however see something that said cpu ratio that said its used to determine the cpu clock speed i tried clicking it but it doesnt do anything

I updated to the 1.0.0.4B BIOS last night and after waking my desktop up this evening I'm seeing what looks to be a much lower CPU speed and multiplier than I would have expected. Is this normal or should it be running at least at 3600Mhz with a higher multiplier constantly? I built the system last weekend so I'm still getting used to what can be considered as typical. This is running on a Tomahawk MAX.

I have this pretty old laptop that i installed with Windows 10 recently, but i notice that the CPU always running at 0.80 GHz ever since. I did some digging and found a temporary solution using ThrottleStop and disable BD PROCHOT which is something to do with the temperature based on what i read. The thing is it never happened when i'm using Windows 7 and i never seen it throttle because of temperature either. IIRC i used to play game with this laptop and the tempt can get around 68-70C and it doesn't throttle.
I wanna know what's causing this and whether it's possible or not to solve this issue so i don't have to keep running ThrottleStop everytime i turn on the laptop. And the funny part if i disable the BD PROCHOT it will run at the highest multiplier even at idle no matter what power plan i use. The laptop is Dell Inspiron 3442.

I recently built a PC with the following parts:

To start, I followed those instructions almost exactly. Specifically:
There may have been a few other tweaks, but this is mostly where I started. This setup posted just fine, and I was getting 4.9-5.0GHz in Task Manager when I booted.
First, I ran userbenchmark. My i9 9900k was showing between 13% and 18% in UB, and well below average on the curve.
I then opened up CoreTemp and Prime95. Starting Prime95, my computer would just immediately power off, no BSOD. Before shutting off, I noticed that the thermals were spiking up above 90 and potentially hitting the t.j. Max value. I then went back into BIOS and reduced the CPU Vcore to 1.200v, and I dropped the multiplier one value at a time. At 47 multiplier, on 1.200v, I was able to run Prime 95, but my thermals range from 84-94 C.
Once I had this setup, I reran userbenchmark, and I am still getting between 13% and 18%, and showing serious under-performance.

So I have spent the better part of 2 hours trying to figure out how to set my mobo settings so that when my PC idles, the CPU takes down its voltage and core multiplier. My current overclock is 4.5 Ghz and 1.25 volts and I am happy with it. How do I make my mobo force my cpu to decrease multiplier and decrease volts when its idle but max out to 4.5 Ghz and 1.25 volts again for when I game and stuff?
My mobo is weird so I take pictures of all the related settings I can find and hopefully you guys can tell me if I should change any of them.

So? Anything I am missing or should enable/disable? Its weird cos on my old 4690k I did manage to make it so that it takes down the multiplier when not required but i don't know why its not doing it on the 4790k...
