More People bashing the CPP

As per this CBC article, the CPP rate for 2022 is going up.

The new rate for 2022 is 5.7% of the first $64,900 of income (minus the first $3,500 of income).

People (comment section) seems pissed that this rate is going up when in fact CPP is one of the best funded pension plan in the world. To many Canadians compare CPP to Social security in the US, which is a totally different plan.

The main reason we have CPP is because most Canadians do not save enough for retirement. There is many reason why people can't save, but there is also a behavioral aspect to retirement savings that many Canadians don't understand or willfully avoid (for many it is painful to save and not spend it all).

I know that people on this sub are not the norm, and most of us here could do without CPP and would prefer to manage our own investments. But in the end, even for people like us (savers), CPP is a great tool. There are many ways to use CPP at your advantage by delaying it and using personally saved/invested assets between 65 and 70 years old (save for Old Age Security).

Without CPP many Canadians would struggle when they reach retirement age and/or cannot work due to age, physical, mental or other reasons.

Also, when CPP was created, the average lifespan of the Canadian population was lower. Now some people will receive a pension for more than 30 years, which was not the original intent/design of the plan.

With the ever increasing lifespan and the fact that most of the population is not investing for their future, we need to keep CPP alive. Most of all, we need to fund the plan appropriately to allow future generations to receive a similar benefit.

Will the CPP increase affect you? How are you planning to integrate CPP with your investments?

I would like to get the opinions of r/PersonalFinanceCanada!

As the title said, BABA discovered a security flaw in Apeche Log4J and reported to the software developer (vendor). The CCP is pissed off because it wants to know about the flaw first.

As the result, CCP pulled support for BABA cloud services for 6 months.

The real reason: CCP wants to know about the flaw first so it can take advantage of the security hole. What a bunch of crooks.

Why did my CPP contribution triple between the last two paystubs?

Does anyone know why my CPP went from 48 CAD in the last week of December to 151 CAD in the first week of January? How is this even calculated?

Edit: you guys are quick! I got my answer - my CPP was maxed out on the very last paycheck and therefore I only paid a small portion. Now I am back to paying it in full.

Looks like the same thing happens with EI? With these two combined, my most recent paycheck is way smaller than I expected it to be.

Thank you everyone for replying!

CPP premiums are getting a bigger bump than planned. Here's why.

https://ca.finance.yahoo.com/news/cpp-premiums-getting-bigger-bump-183618893.html

What has happened during the pandemic is that average weekly earnings have jumped because there are fewer people working in lower-paying jobs. Without them, the average increase appears more dramatic than what it is.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has asked Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland to work with provinces to increase by 25 per cent the amount paid out in CPP benefits to widows and widowers.

EI premiums are going up as well once a two-year federal freeze on increases thaws next year. Premiums are set to rise thereafter from $1.58 per $100 of insurable earnings, to $1.83 by 2027. The yearly increases are the maximum amount allowed by law and need to go up to refill the EI fund after it was drained by pandemic-induced demand.

How much will you get in CPP and OAS if you haven't worked a lot in your life?

Background story below if you want a bit more context. But essentially, my mom is in her mid 50's, she hasn't worked "a lot", at least not jobs where she paid taxes/into CPP. She is current on Ontario Works and in government subsidized housing. She claims when she hits 65 she will be getting a good amount each month (like a couple thousand) from CPP and OAS. She keeps telling me about people she knows that are getting at least a thousand bucks a month from CPP/OAS and they didn't work much in their lives.

I'm wondering how true this is and whether I should be mentally prepared to help supplement her retirement income. I'd like to know if CPP/OAS has a guaranteed amount, or if the amount you get is based on how much you've worked and paid into CPP over time.

Background/context: mom is a single immigrant mother. Brought me here when I was little. My mom was a software engineer back at home, she worked for big companies and often got contracted out to hospitals and big companies to work on their in house programs. She got paid an excellent salary. We came to Canada to give me a better life and some other reasons. When we first got here, she tried to look for work in her field. This was super challenging and she didn't find a lot of good jobs as we don't value foreign degrees/universities as much as domestic. Instead, she found a guy. Said guy promised he would take care of us, she fell in love, believed him, stayed at home for 3-4 years, and they broke up. When we first immigrated here, my mom had excellent English. But after staying at home for so long and being out of practice, her English deteriorated. And then trying to find software engineering jobs in her 40s with weaker english was even harder.

She ended up working odd jobs to raise me. She did medical receptionist jobs, general labour, she stocked freezers at the super market and she was so cold, she worked as a personal nurse kind of person to an older lady with dementia, we tried owning a convenience store at one point, etc. A lot of these paid cash, she took what she could get. But between Toronto rent and raising a kid, I don't think she saved much. All of our savings are from her job back from her home country, and from selling our house from her home country. I also think from these jobs she must not have paid into CPP much.

Long story short, eventually she ended up on OW and subsidized housing. I had moved out for university. When this first happened, I was still trying to encourage her

Review of Hilton Garden Inn Guatemala City with 1.5 cpp Hilton Redemption

I was looking for a way to get rid of 40k points and the hest options were some of the 10k point hotels in the southern US or Guatemala. I went with the latter since I got the chance to get to explore a new country and the cost to drive to Arkansas was more than the cost to fly to Guatemala.

The hotel wasn't anything remarkable, but what I expect from a Hilton Garden Inn. The building was quite small and the hotel had fewer than 60 rooms probably. Other than a restaurant and half decent gym, there isnt much to write home about. The rooms were average size, though I enjoyed the layout and how the bathroom had black marble walls and flooring.

The hotel was also located in a very high end part of the city with many nice restaurants nearby, and the area is extremely safe.

The normal price of the hotel is $120 a night after all taxes, which I certainly wouldnt pay for in Guatemala. But this price is comparable to nearby hotels like the intercontinental, barcelo, or a Marriott. However, at 10k points a night and the 5th night free, it was probably the best redemption I can find.

Public Service Pension and CPP

I was listening to a supervisor at work talk about their 35 year pension and complaining. They said that it was a joke because it wasn’t the 35 years of service that beefed up the payout, it was the combination of years of service and the CPP top up that gave the 70%.

I apologize, I’m fairly new to the public service and fairly new to financial literacy. I was under the assumption that the pension we received from the PS was separate from our CPP and would receive both as separate payouts in retirement.

Can someone explain to me how this works?

Thanks very much in advance.

Confused about Pension + CPP for retirement

Sorry for another post about this topic, but I searched on other posts and I was still confused.

So the Pension and CPP work in coordination that results in a maximum of 70% of the top 5 years worked right? But doesn't that mean you can work for much fewer than 35 years and still get the maximum payout of 70%?

For example, let's take 2 scenarios, both worked in the private sector but joined the public sector at different ages, both retire at 65, with a top 5 year of 100k earned.

Scenario 1: Joined public sector at age 30, worked 35 years. Get 100k * (0.02*35) = 70k a year in retirement, CPP is included in the 70k.

Scenario 2: Joined public sector at age 36, and only worked 29 years. But prior to joining the public sector, worked in the private sector and still made contributions to the CPP. At retirement, they will get 100k * (0.02*29) + 12k(CPP) = 70k.

Both scenarios hit the maximum 70% payout, but the second scenario only has to work 29 years in the public sector, allowing them to save the 10% pension contributions from each paycheck.

CPPS question

I’m a 24 year old male that’s been dealing with β€œchronic pelvic pain” since I was about 16. For the first 6-7 years or so I was diagnosed with β€œChronic non-bacterial prostatitis”. I’ve had a cystoscopy, numerous blood tests, numerous urine tests, and countless rounds of antibiotics. All of this with no improvement in symptoms. These include frequency, hesitancy, pain in the tip, pain at the base of my penis, pain below the belly button, and then also pain in the perineum just to name a few. I’ve seen multiple urologists and even went to see a urologist in Europe( I’m in the US)this past summer to see if they could possibly help me, no luck. Within the last 2 years my condition has been re-diagnosed as β€œChronic Pelvic Pain syndrome”. My symptoms have gotten worse with each passing year. One symptom that I consider the worst, is when I have a full bladder but am unable to pee. It feels like someone is clamping down on my urethra with pliers and I have to push to the point of screaming to get a few drops of urine out. I’ve tried relaxing and breathing and that just does nothing while I’m in that situation. I’m currently in Pelvic Floor therapy and have daily stretches/breathing exercises that I work on. I take daily fiber and multivitamin gummies. I’ve noticed alcohol and caffeine are major triggers of mine so I avoid those at all costs. I do however smoke weed daily and have noticed that sometimes my symptoms tend to flare after I smoke. It’s not every time but I was curious if anyone else has noticed a link between Marijuana use and Chronic Pelvic Pain? Also if there are any other triggers that you guys have noticed I would love to hear about them. If there is someone out there that has dealt with and beat Pelvic Pain, what worked for you? Like I said I’ve been dealing with the pain for 7-8 years now and it’s gotten to the point where I quit my job because I just couldn’t do it with the pain everyday. I’m getting desperate for answers. I have a nerve block scheduled in a week and then a second cystoscopy the following week in case the nerve block doesn’t work. Oh by the way, sometimes I will pee out a small red blob, it looks like a blood clot. This is why my urologist wants to do the second cystoscopy. If there is a procedure/stretch/diet, basically anything that has even helped a little for you, please let me know. I’m willing to try anything.

Cpp and Covid

It's going to be interesting to see how these holidays will affect Covid cases and in terms affect CPP. I just found out that half the people that I went to Thanksgiving with now have Covid. So it makes me wonder what protocols the school has in place for finals as well as for next semester. What happens if students who have in person classes next semester get Covid. Will that professor have to record class as well as instruct in person to accommodate everyone throughout the whole semester.

I understand both sides to this argument. I am also sick of this situation we have been with Covid for the past 2 years. This has been navigated in such a bad manner at a global level as well at the local level and I am so done with CPP not telling what their protocols will be when students start to get Covid. All they have release are a few emails talking about advance cleaning and that sort of thing. The vaguest thing they can say. It makes me wonder if they even care at all because cases will go up that's a fact but that is a cost that they are willing for us to pay so that they can bring back their profits.

Trying shockwave therapy. Most people with cpps see success

Greetings!

12 months sufferer

This week was my first session. I had my sports medicine physical therapist asses me. He did mention that my left leg stability is very weak. Starting from my hips down to my calf. The therapist did mention that everything was stiff and noted. As viewing my legs he noticed that my left Adductor muscles had a lot of tigers. We’ve gone through and used the shockwave therapy machine to send frequency to the muscles. He did go close to my crotch and did shock wave on the Gracilis muscles. When the procedure took place it was very satisfying yet painful when the machine was hitting the triggerpoints. I shrivelled up. My physical therapist determined that I needed six sessions to see improvements he did mention to do dry needling on my whole leg muscles to help the healing journey faster. But definitely I will give time for the shockwave therapy, I feel like dry needling is going to be too much on my muscles.

Background about my cpps journey.

21 male from Canada

My journey started a year ago today. After having a sexual intercourse with someone unprotected which was something first time in my life I did. I have started having symptoms ever since the day after the intercourse. I was anxious and hypochondriac. Thinking I definitely contracted something while having sex and the day after. Turns out both of us were healthy and it was me overwhelming my self with fear and guilt.

Long story sort. I fell in this rabbit hole of chasing bacterias and having doctors throw all sorts of medications. I lost a lot of money with Microgendx and still till this day i think they’re shady with what they pick up in their Laboratories while testing ur specimen. No wonder it’s not FDA approved. Anyways everything came through clean and negative. No UTI, No STI, No herpes, nothing.

After meeting this young urologist in Canada he looked at my reports and the first thing he said was I have CPPS. I was shocked. No antibiotic treatment was implemented. He was upset that I was thrown 3days of Moxifloxcin and all these medications for no reason. Btw I got floxed. But thank god for my age, I recovered in 3 months. He sent a requisition to a really good therapist who treats male pelvic floors. She explained that my PF was guarding the muscles. She mentioned that I had no triggers internally but some externally near my aductor muscles. I went in for couple months but seen very minor improvements with no big change. I was in school as well so I wasn’t abl
