The title is straightforward. Most atheists also tend to be methodological naturalists and physicalists so the idea of an afterlife is outside of consideration as well. Although the hard problem of consciousness is a contended topic in philosophy of mind and neuroscience (how does qualia arise from matter, why is detection of stimuli accompanied by subjective experience is how I would word it), there are many NCC's that point to it emerging from the brain: cortico-thalamic pathways involved in perception of sensation and processing of stimuli, brainstem regions involved in arousal-control...etc.
No brain = most likely no experience of an afterlife.
However, for the sake of the argument, if you were to empirically test out the possibility of consciousness survival beyond brain death and lack of brain activity, how would you do so? Lots of proponents and disbelievers alike say its beyond the realm of science, but I feel like it may not be the case. I'm thinking of certain ways one could test it out:
- Demonstrate that the mind can exist independent of the brain by controlled out of body experiences and target identification experiments.
- Whether by NDEs or people who can induce them on-command
- Demonstrate that the mind can exist after brain death: in a hypothetical future where cryonically-frozen patients are revived and talk about what they experienced within the 100-200 years of death, bonus if they mention things like major historical events that occurred during the time they were dead for.
- Information of past-life memories that can be corroborated with the deceased persons life events, might be suggestive of reincarnation if all other possibilities like fraud, cryptomnesia and indirect acquisition of memories are eliminated. Bonus points if the past memories are extremely specific and lead to researchers opening, for example, a lock left by the deceased person (Ian Stevenson, a proponent of reincarnation left a lock just in case his next incarnate could open it).
- Ian Stevenson's methodology has been criticized a lot but Jim Tucker has slightly more promising results, focussing on cases from the US.
- If medium psychics pass the Randi Challenge or Dustin Dean's 10k challenge (obtain secret code left by deceased person) by providing specific information about the deceased that couldn't have been obtained from hot readings, under scientifically controlled conditions. Of course, none are willing to take on any of these challenges.

The second time she had not been paying attention, immersed in an Enhanced Reality Game and walked into traffic, injured badly enough that the 'soup' couldn't save her. Therapy had eased the trauma of being killed, since both of them were 'lingering traumatic death events', and she had largely forgotten about them by the time she was 19.
Her life was one of parties, hanging out with friends, luxuries, and wanting for nothing. She had even traveled to other planets, and during Final Education Year Three she had even visited Earth and her ancestor's ancient homeland of Azatlan and The Wailing Loch. She'd even seen the immortal Bessie as the great beast surfaced to blow air at one of the Lochs.
It wasn't until she was almost thirty-five that she began to feel like something else was missing.

For the first time in what might have been days, Hebert took the time to look around. With his back resting on a stone support column he was as comfortable as he could make himself without taking off his armor. The exhaust even on idle was enough to warm the hundreds of pounds of stone if he stayed here much longer. Still, there was a limit to what a cocktail of amphetamines, caffeine, and glucose could do. Better to rest and die well than keep fighting exhausted, it was pointless anyhow they had lost.

I was a pretty unique situation. I did pretty well on all my shelf exams (raw scores typically in the 80s and 90s), so I knew my stuff in June, but I started studying in October so I had pretty much forgotten everything I knew. My first couple weeks studying was just relearning stuff I knew before, which explains the jump from NBME 9 to 11.
Was a little nervous after UW 1 and the Free 120 and with what the score predictor said, but at some point you gotta trust the general trend of your scores and go in (I was burnt out and sick of studying at that point). Actual test day went pretty well. Actual test felt fair and most similar to the question-style of NBME 9, 10, 11, and Free 120. Didn't feel particularly vague and felt like they told you enough information in every question to answer the question or at least decently eliminate answer choices. Ethics and QI felt fair. I've never really had issues with timing and the actual test was similar to that. Stems didn't feel any longer than what I'd seen on other practice questions. Break time was enough and I paced around on my breaks to help me get focused.
Ethics is manageable with Amboss. Knowing brainstem death is high yield and takes about 30 seconds to learn. Got about 3 questions on it - if they have no brainstem reflexes (corneal, gag, oculomotor with cold water in ear test) they're dead and you can pull the plug; if family doesn't want to pull the plug consult the ethics committee to talk to the family but you can still pull the plug. Otherwise, most of it is just HIPAA and common sense/take your best guess. Not much else you can do to prep for this stuff I feel.
QI is manageable with UWorld and Amboss. For QI, if you can force a safety feature either through programming in the EMR (not EMR alerts but actually stopping a wrong medication order from going through) or mechanical engineering (i.e. different meds have different ports for IVs so they don't get mixed up), that's probably the right answer. Next tier down is putting different meds in different locations or different looking bottles so they're not mixed up, but that's not as effective as forcing through mechanical engineerin

I know Yu-Gi-Oh has been a frequent source of drama for this subreddit lately, and this post is absolutely inspired by the recent works of /u/misterbadguy159 covering the card game side of the drama. This post is admittedly more of a compilation than a proper post as many of the sources and claims in this post are going to link back to posts made by /u/misterbadguy159 and others that have long since done the work breaking down the myths covered here today. With that being said:

For those out of the loop, Yu-Gi-Oh is a manga series written by Kazuki Takahashi that ran from September 14, 1996 to March 8, 2004, totalling 343 chapters. In the story, protagonist Yugi Mutou (Yugi Moto in the localisations) discovers an ancient artifact that contains a dark spirit within who takes residence in Yugi's soul. The spirit takes over whenever Yugi is in danger, challenging criminals and thugs with deadly games of chance wherein he punishes them with ironic punishments. Later on, it's discovered that the spirit is the remnant of an Egyptian Pharoah who lived thousands of years in the past called Atem.
After about seven volumes, Takahashi created a one-off card game called Duel Monsters, which saw immediate popularity with the fans. After it and villain Seto Kaiba were brought back several times, the card game became a reality in 1999, coming to the West in 2002.
After a 1998 anime adaptation by Toei, Studio Gallop, alongside Nihon Ad Systems, would make an anime covering much of the manga following the introduction of Kaiba and the Duel Monsters game (alongside several filler arcs done to either shill new cards or buy Takahashi time to wrap up the current arc in the manga). INTRODUCTION
This is a single entity encounter I modified from Ghosts of Saltmarsh using a combination of my own machinations and other people’s action-oriented “Thousand Teeth the Devourer” stat blocks.
This was designed for my group of four level 3 characters, and it was very challenging and even more fun! For parties of more than four characters, I would recommend bumping up AC and HP slightly and using the Optional Lair Effects. Another option would be to add some other creatures to fight; might I suggest an amphisbaena?
TACTICS
- Before the battle, roll a stealth check for OTT. It will attempt to initiate battle by using Behind You!, most likely on the loudest character. Attack with ADV on unaware characters!
- OTT has ADV on attack rolls where both OTT and target are in water.
- OTT will tend to use Dive every round when possible, circling around to attack the character that has dealt it the most damage of the round with Behind You!
- If a target is already grappled with Bite, OTT will use Death Roll instead of Multiattack.
