A list of puns related to "American Idiot (song)"
I love the older Green Day music but there's something about American Idiot that makes my skin crawl. It's like the most generic pop "punk" song and whatever it comes on at a bar, everyone sings along like it's the greatest song. I hate it.
Edit: thanks for the gold! I think I figured out why I hate it.... It's like a popular church youth group song they would all sing while thinking they're edgy.
Jesus of Suburbia
Holiday
Homecoming
Whatsername
Letterbomb
St. Jimmy
Boulevard of Broken Dreams
American Idiot
Wake Me Up When September Ends
Are We The Waiting
Give Me Novacaine
She's a Rebel
Extraordinary Girl
A LOT of our parents hated them for the title.
A lot of us hated them for being pop-rock, not hard-core enough too mainstream or whatever.
But when you actually go back and look at the lyrics and consider how America has changed in the 17 years since this song came out, they deserve a lot of props for somehow predicting social media America without predicting social media entirely
I absolutely love this album. I think itβs a masterpiece and when I heard it at 14 it changed by life because it was the first album that ever spoke to me. The linear story made it even better and more cinematic I guess. Itβs shocking relevant today. Looking back, it was everywhere too. I donβt think any rock album reached the heights of American Idiot since and I could kind of see why. I guess Iβm asking what everyone else thinks. EDIT: In terms of overall scale of equaling or eclipsing American Idiot in terms of scope.
Hey, new Green Day fan here, "recently" discovered them thanks to the Hella Mega tour which I'll go to this year, slowly going through all albums to prepare for it. I already heard FOAMF and Dookie - Warning, so American Idiot was next and damn, that album is really really great.
I wasn't sure what to expect, but my expectations were high because every GD fan calls it a masterpiece, and I'm really not disappointed. Every single song is really great and I've never seen an album with a story as good as this one. The deluxe bonus tracks are good too. Much higher replay value than I expected as well.
My favorite GD album still is FOAMF (is that illegal?), but AI is right behind. Just like my favorite GD song still is Junkies on a High, but Holiday is right behind. Holiday is so damn amazing. But every GD album grew on me more after the first listen so I think that will change.
Question: Why are some songs combined into 1? Like Extraordinary Girl / Letterbomb. Is it to force CD people to listen to them together and to encourage listening to the entire thing in order for the story?
It's very nice to officially be a member of the GD community now. I'll be glad to exchange thoughts about the album and my opinions.
Does anyone else find it annoying that you can't listen to certain songs separately on spotify. Like Are We The Waiting/St. Jimmy or Give Me Novacaine/She's a Rebel
Ik that they're intended to be listened to together but you should be able to listen to them separately. There are American Idiot and American Idiot (Deluxe) albums on spotify. Why couldn't they have it so one version of the album has the tracks together and the other has them separated?
I usually listen to these tracks together anyway when I listen to the whole album but sometimes I just want to listen to them on their own. Also, tracks on other albums that transition into each other are separated, including LOTAG/Murder City and Christian's Inferno/Last Night on Earth on 21CB (which is also a rock opera)
Obviously, both were big as j
place in Green Day career and the band's legacy.
Personally, I like Dookie, as an era, as an album, more. Green Day had already become big band in the community of punk bands.
and so, uh..Here's my question: Whic was bigger as a blow-up: Dookie or American Idiot
Which of those is more big piece in Green Day's history?
I bet it's American Idiot, because it has sold more and it was a total bomb after Green Day releasing Warning and getting not so good reviews for it. The storyline between the characters. And the songs wake up more feelings than those on Dookie's all the way punk-attitude.
What are your thoughts?
My friend has been getting into greenday thanks to me. She has listed to American idiot and wants more albums to listen to. I'm bad at recommending things so your recommendations will be appreciated.
Keep in mind that Green Day started in 1987. 17 years later, American Idiot. It just turned 17 this year. Wow. I feel so fucking old now.
Whatsername is easily one of my favorite green day songs. Everything about the song is amazing and to this day it still gives me chills when it all builds up and comes together. I sometimes feel like it's a gift to green day fans as it's so good yet so under the radar for the general public
Basically what the title says. Personally I have mixed feelings on it, but I was discussing it with a friend last night and was curious about what others thought.
Small edit: tell me anything! Did you see it, were you a theater kid, do you like what they did with the music and the story?
MAJOR EDIT: a bunch of people havenβt seen it/want to know where to watch it so here goes nothing!
Broadway Idiot (the documentary about the original Broadway production w/ BJA!) for FREE in good quality! | LA Warehouse production pro-shot (2016) | Local New Jersey production proshot (2018) | Little playlist of assorted stuff from the Broadway production | Pace University production (my personal favorite, 2018)
There was also another thread looking for recordings of the show semi recently, so there are good resources there as well (shoutout to u/pixelmeow for bringing that thread to my attention! They also have some of the best quality audio bootlegs of the OG Broadway cast Iβve found!)
Hope this helps for any curious souls!
I ask this because a alarming amount of people in YouTube comment sections say this, and I don't know why. To me American Idiot is more of a concept album and less of a political album. It's political don't get me wrong but I don't get why some pay so much attention to that. Like people can dislike it for the quality of the music but disliking it because it's "too political" seems odd to me. And while the story of the album might have political undertones, only a couple songs on the album are overtly political. Anyway, does anyone here actually share that same opinion or do you think it's stupid like me?
Are they calling Americans idiots? Or are they calling idiots american? In this essay I will teach how to know the difference between the Chinese mafia and Sea turtles choking on plastic.
Is there a version of American Idiot with Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Are We the Waiting/St. Jimmy, Give me Novacaine/Sheβs a Rebel, and Extraordinary Girl/Letterbomb separated on Spotify? Iβm too used to the normal version of the album when I was on Apple Music and I canβt really get used to the Spotify version with the songs together. Both deluxe and normal versions on Spotify have them grouped together so Iβm wondering if thereβs a hidden one that has them separated.
Walking Alone is unironically fire
The title speaks for itself!
I was kind of curious about Green Day, so I'm going in alphabetical order! Why? Well, why not? The idea was mostly a joke, but then I actually did it, and it's probably more time than I'd have spent with Green Day otherwise, so like, why not? (That said, my sister is decidedly unhappy with me for first hearing American Idiot in this form. But you gotta pulverize some eggs to make an Eiffel omelette, right? Right!) Green Day! Let's go!
Okay.
I started this last October, took a break, but am getting back to it. I've heard the first four letters' (and numbers!) worth of songs, but that's a fourth of the way done, as I've got about 54 songs down out of 202. Source I'm using is this Spotify playlist, sorted into alphabetical order -- so if your favorite Green Day song is on there and starts with A, B, C, D, or a digit, I've heard it! If not, I probably haven't!
Now, going into this, my Green Day knowledge was very limited, but not non-existent; the ten Green Day songs I knew were mostly the hits ("Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)", "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", "Basket Case", "Wake Me Up When September Ends", "Minority", Warning", "Holiday", and "American Idiot"), but then, semi-inexplicably, "Church on Sunday", and, very inexplicably, "Misery".
Of these ten songs, my favorite was (and remains) "Misery", because I have trash taste. But wait, don't touch that dial; my second-favorite was (and remains) "Church on Sunday", because I have great taste.
At any rate, they've always been on my peripheral of artists to check out, and going in alphabetical order didn't seem like as good a way to do it as any, but also seemed like a way to do it, so, why not, right? Like -- I know Green Day is a band that's changed a lot over the years, and I know that people have STRONG AND POLARIZED opinions about this change, I think?, so clearly, rather than listen in order and appreciate the overall development and shifts and form my own opinions on them, the best way is to just, as B. B. Rodriguez once said, mix them all together in a large jug.
Note: This is sarcasm. That is a horrible way to do this.
But I've done it nonetheless. And I've had fun, so far!
Here are my thoughts.

Hey, does anybody know if there was anything about Jesus of Suburbia outside of American Idiot album? Like a reference in lyrics or just anything related to his story. Im just curious, nothing too important.
