Okay, I know the movie Heathers starred Amanda Peterson as the bitchy blonde alpha Heather. But then I look it up on Wikipedia and I find out the role was played by some dead chick named [Kim Walker](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Walker_(actress)). And then I found out Peterson got hooked and drugs and died and she's mainly known for Can't Buy Me Love.

That is crazy, son.

2021 r/MMA Awards Results

The votes have been cast and counted and it is now time to reveal who the users of R/MMA have chosen to honor with this year’s R/MMA awards.

MMA Podcast of the year

  1. Heavy Hands (5%)

  2. Morning Kombat (14.8%)

  3. Believe You Me (21.3%)

  4. Jack Slack Podcast (28%)

  5. The MMA Hour (30.9%)

It didn’t take long for Ariel Helwani to announce he was bringing back his podcast The MMA Hour after leaving ESPN in June of 2021. The MMA Hour’s first episode back aired in August of 2021 and the podcast immediately reclaimed its old slot as one of the most influential media outlets in the sport. Ariel mixed fighter interviews, analysis, and feuds with other members of the MMA world to make The MMA Hour bigger than ever. Not bad for a podcast that wasn’t around for more than half of the year.

Best MMA IG/Twitter Account

  1. twitter.com/Grabaka_Hitman (9.8%)

3t) twitter.com/darrentill2 (17.4%)

3t) twitter.com/KPetersonUFC (17.4%)

  1. intagram.com/thebeastufc (23.2%)

  2. twitter.com/ARIELHELWANI (32.3%)

Ariel Helwani’s Twitter account was time and again the place MMA fans turned to find breaking news about the sport. Whether it was fight cancellations, fight announcements, clips of interviews with fighters and other personalitues, or Ariel just giving his takes on the sport itself his Twitter was a relaible source of information for fans of the sport.

Best MMA Website

  1. fightmatrix.com (0.8%)

  2. mmafightcards.org (2.2%)

  3. 4chan/sp (3.3%)

  4. tapology.com (9.2%)

  5. R/MMA (84.5%)

Hey look we gave ourselves this award. However, it is hard to argue that there is a better source for mma online than r/mma. Over 1.7 million users come together every day to discuss breaking news, share highlights, watch interviews and press conferences, watch the fights together, engage with the fighters in AMAs, and share the occasional shitpost. Here’s to another great year in 2022.

Gym of the Year

  1. MMA Factory (5.7%)

  2. Tiger Muay Thai (14.2%)

  3. American Top Team (16.9%)

  4. Elavation Fight Team (30.5%)

  5. City Kickboxing (32.6%)

Eugene Bareman and Doug Viney’s gym has made a name for itself as the top gym in Oceania producing UFC Champions Israel Adesanya and Alexander Volkanovski. Whil Volkanovski has since left the gym, there is no doubt it’s role in his rise to the title. On top of their 2 champions, City Kickboxing is home to 3 other ranked UFC fighters in Brad Riddell, Dan Hooker, and Kai Kara-France along with numerous other fighters both in the UFC and on

Hard Mode Bingo: Gothic Edition Square #18 Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman (Genre Mashup with 3+ genres)

It doesn’t get much more Gothic than France in 1348. This book is so gothic I'm tempted to use it for my Gothic Fantasy square. I really want that to be one of the ultimates in the genre, you know?

At the same time, I wanted my Genre Mashup book to excel in every genre it smooshed together, and Between Two Fires certainly did that. As a historical, it was well-researched not just in its setting details but in its ability to convey the mindset of another place and time. As a horror, it did quietly creepy just as well as in-your-face brutality. And the vividness of the fantastical elements were on par with any high fantasy title, with character archetypes that would appeal to fans of grittier, sword and sorcery style fantasy.

Also, all of the content warnings. None of it felt tasteless or without purpose, but I’m thinking in particular of a scene involving a dead infant and the frequent threats of sexual assault. The horror is just a lot even when you’re prepared, and I’d hate for someone to go in unprepared.

In fact, here’s a brief but not comprehensive list of fairly neutral things that are creepy/scary now because of this book:

  1. Fish
  2. Hands
  3. Knocks at the door of the house down the street
  4. Broomsticks
  5. Jellyfish
  6. Hands again (β€œA f****** hand!”)

OTHER BINGO SQUARES:

Backlist Book (Normal)

Revenge-Seeking Character (Normal)

Found Family (Hard Mode)

Has Chapter Titles (Hard Mode)

SUMMARY: And Lucifer said: β€œLet us rise against Him now in all our numbers, and pull the walls of heaven down…”

The year is 1348. Thomas, a disgraced knight, has found a young girl alone in a dead Norman village. An orphan of the Black Death, and an almost unnerving picture of innocence, she tells Thomas that plague is only part of a larger cataclysmβ€”that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on heaven, and that the world of men has fallen behind the lines of conflict.

Is it delirium or is it faith? She believes she has seen the angels of God. She believes the righteous dead speak to her in dreams. And now she has convinced the faithless Thomas to shepherd her across a depraved landscape to Avignon. There, she tells Thomas, she will fulfill her mission: to confront the evil that has devastated the earth, and to restore to this betrayed, murderous knight the nobility and hope of salvation he long abandoned.

*As hell unleashes its wrath, and as the true nature of the girl is revealed, Thomas will find himself

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Hard Mode Bingo: Gothic Edition - Square #17 Malpertuis by Jean Ray (Every Chapter Title Has More Than One Word)

Many thanks to u/Unknown_Seagull for recommending this weird little book to me in the distant past of 6 months ago. While I can’t meaningfully compare it to the original French version, I thought the English translation conveyed the story, tone, and style really well.

I had a dim awareness of Harry Dickson, The American Sherlock Holmes, but didn’t make the connection that this was the same author who wrote those pulp detective stories (over a hundred within seven years!) until I read the introduction to Malpertuis. It turns out Ray was asked to translate the stories from German, but found them so bad that he asked his publisher if he could rewrite them instead. The publisher was like, β€œSure, Jean. Whatever. Just make sure they’re the same length and still match the covers.”

Why do I bring this up? Because this boss move is just one of many anecdotes about Jean Ray that paints a picture of a fascinating personality with a jaw-dropping work ethic and a prodigious capacity for playing games with the truth. He truly deserves an Author Appreciation post by someone more familiar with his oeuvre, but I’ll try to keep this focused on Malpertuis, a hidden gem for fans of Gormenghast, House of Leaves, and The Haunting of Hill House.

If you think that tells you all you need to know, I’m begging you to trust that feeling and go in as blind as you can. DO NOT GO TO WIKIPEDIA. It’s only a stub, but it describes the entire book in one line that completely spoils one of the coolest things about it. Dun do it.

OTHER BINGO SQUARES:

First Person POV (Hard Mode)

New to You Author (Hard Mode probably)

Mystery Plot (Normal)

SUMMARY: Malpertuis is a puzzle box of nested narratives wrested from a set of manuscripts stolen from a monastery. A bizarre collection of distrustful relatives has gathered together in the ancient stone mansion of a sea-trading dynasty for the impending death of the occult scientist, Uncle Cassave, and the reading of his will. Forced to dwell together for the remainder of their lives within the stifling walls of Malpertuis for the sake of a cursed inheritance, their banal existence gradually gives way to love affairs and secret plots, as the building slowly exposes a malevolence that eventually leads to a series of ghastly deaths.

*The eccentric personalities it houses―which include an obsessive taxidermist, a hypochondriac, a trio of vengeful sisters and a former paint store manager who has gone mad―begin to she

Books with trans/nonbinary characters for every bingo square

Hello there!

This year, I'm doing a themed bingo square with trans or nonbinary characters in every book. As such, I've spent a lot of time (too much time) compiling books that fit for each square. I had originally intended to post this list after finishing my board with a write-up, but seeing as we are past halfway through the bingo year and I'm on track to finish pretty late, I’ve decided to put this up early so it can hopefully actually be helpful for people still looking to fill their boards.

Books are listed under each category they fit, but I didn’t always check for some of the harder ones (eg. first person, forest setting) if they fit something obvious (eg. published in 2021, cat squasher). Books are sourced from the recommendations thread, the focus thread, the queersff database, readsrainbow, various Goodreads lists, and various threads in other subreddits. Also, disclaimer, I haven't read all these, so categorizations may be inaccurate. Please let me know if you notice that this is the case, or if there are any books I should add or remove!

Without further ado, here's my list of 250+ books that qualify for the trans/NB character square plus at least one other square:

Five Short Stories

Behind the Sun, Above the Moon edited by Brooklyn Ray

Diana Comet and Other Improbable Stories by Sandra McDonald

Everyone on the Moon is Essential Personnel by Julian K Jarboe

Glitter + Ashes: Queer Tales of a World That Wouldn’t Die edited by Dave Ring

Homesick: Stories by Nino Cipri

Love After the End: An Anthology of Two-Spirit and Indigiqueer Speculative Fiction edited by Joshua Whitehead

Love: Beyond Body, Space, and Time edited by Hope Nicholson

Maiden, Mother, and Crone: Fantastical Trans Femmes edited by Gwen Benaway

Meanwhile, Elsewhere edited by Cat Fitzpatrick and Casey Plett

No Man of Woman Born by Ana Mardoll

Portland Diary: Short Stories 2016/2017 by Jamie Berrout

The Other Side: An Anthology of Queer Paranormal Romance edited by Melanie Gillman and Kori Michele Handwerker

Don’t go to Googleβ€”search for them on uncensored search engines and platforms such as Duck Duck Go, Telegram, Bitchute, and Rumble. Happy digging. Although, ya might not be too happy about everything they are coming forward about.

Hint: if it’s being censored, you NEED to read it.

Tip: copy and paste this list to save to the notes on your phone in case this post gets removed for β€œnot following community guidelines” because, you know, heaven forbid you listen to THESE doctors.
