If god has a personal relationship with everyone, why does he test groups of people in a geographic area (say, a hurricane hits Florida, or the 1755 Lisbon earthquake)? How does the death of young, otherwise healthy, good people play into this plan?

TIL that in 1755 a massive earthquake hit Lisbon, Portugal on a major Catholic holiday, destroying the city's churches while sparing its brothels. Tens of thousands of worshipers were killed. The event profoundly shook the belief in a merciful god and the power of the church across Europe.

Did the earthquake and tsunami of 1755, known especially for the cataclysmic destruction of Lisbon, affect other places in the Atlantic World? If so, how?
Earthquakes and tsunamis are obviously not localized events. Earthquakes can be felt at great distances. Tsunamis can affect coasts across oceans and even bend around points of land. Yet we mostly learn about the 1755 event because of its effects on Lisbon. Were other places in Portugal or Spain affected? If so how? What about France, England, or other Atlantic islands? What about on the Africa side of the fault line? Did the earthquake and tsunami lead to major changes anywhere else on par with what was seen in Lisbon?

How big of an impact did the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 have on the political structure and colonial prospects of Portugal?
I recently read the Wikipedia article about the devastation of the city, but I want to know more about the lasting effects on the Portuguese Empire. Any help finding resources on the topic would be appreciated, thanks!

This one hits home, makes me pretty sad that so much beauty was erased.
Here is the street view from the same perspective of the original pic as the place now stands.
Here is an old picture from another perspective, with the scaffolding already in place for demolition. And the site after deconstruction. The whole row of buildings that stood behind the church were also demolished later.
Also lots of other beautiful buildings not visible here ended up the same way in the years to come, such as this palace along with the the arch on the left hand side.

The 1755 Lisbon earthquake. In combination with subsequent fires and a tsunami, the earthquake almost totally destroyed Lisbon and adjoining areas. Estimates place the death toll in Lisbon alone between 10,000 and 100,000 people,[5] making it one of the deadliest earthquakes in history.

What lasting effects did the 1755 Lisbon earthquake have on religious/philosophical beliefs in Europe?
I'm recycling this old question in hopes this mustard-yellow flair will make it get a great answer! (I have been researching Caffarelli's presence at this event since I posted that but I still don't know much about how he escaped, only discovered he and another big castrato who was in Lisbon then have had their stories mushed together in secondary sources a couple of times!)
Wikipedia has this to say on the 1755 Lisbon Earthquake:
>The event was widely discussed and dwelt upon by European Enlightenment philosophers, and inspired major developments in theodicy and in the philosophy of the sublime.
However the explanatory paragraphs are rather vague. There some talk of Candide and such but nothing really meriting the term "major developments." Anyone have the deeper picture on this earthquake's effects on European beliefs?
