A list of puns related to "Variometer"
Does one really require a dedicated flight computer or a good phone with good battery and barometer good enough for XC soaring and other things? Is it worth spending the extra money and getting something like XC tracer or something like that...
The wiki article says it should, but whenever I try to run it I get the error "Atmosphere Analysis can't be done right now." Are there other requirements for it to work?
Anyone have any experience with the Flyte Park Nanovario $99.00? I know it's probably meh, but for a novice that is looking to ridge soar think that would do the job for now?
I really enjoy flying gliders, but have never had a variometer on any of mine. The cost to add one to my plane is pretty steep, so I was wondering what other glider pilots felt about them and the importance of having one!
My phone (galaxy s3) has a built in barometer, and there are apps available that uses that + GPS and turns the phone into a variometer. I've tested it on the ground by just moving the phone up and down and it seems to work decently in theory. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with using these apps, if it works fine for flights or if I should invest in a dedicated variometer instead. There's a lot of money to be saved by using the phone it seems, plus you get all kind of features like GPS flight tracking and recording that you normally only get on high end expensive variometers.
A question I've had for awhile which I have never been able to get a clear answer to is what's the difference between a vsi and Variometer? I know Variometers can be compensated and whatnot, but even when they're not.. What's the difference?
So I'm test flying an experimental homebuilt airplane for a friend, and I'm convinced his altimeter isn't working. There's also no good way for me to really gauge it other than looking at the ground and knowing from experience that I'm higher than the altimeter is reading (I already know it's off by 375 feet on the ground). He also built it with no VSI, I don't know why, but he didn't. So what I'd like to do is get a decent cheap handheld altimeter/variometer, to take with me in the cockpit to compare the one in the plane.
This seems like the most logical place to ask for help, so can I get some suggestions for decent products? Thanks in advance.
Hey there, /r/gliding. I'm a hobby computer programmer as well as a student glider pilot, and I have a question for you.
During my flight instruction and now solo time, one of the things that I thought would really aid me in my ability to find thermals and alert me to lift during situations where my attention might be on something else that isn't important to the safe outcome of the flight; is a audio variometer. My club flies old, electronic-less Schweizer 2-33's and 1-26's. As I'm sure a lot of other clubs do. The variometers in these sailplanes do not have audio support, and I'm sure a lot of the same gliders around different clubs in the world also don't have audio support.
My question is, if I were to offer an electronic audio-only variometer, sensitive to around 1 foot up or down in altitude, for less than 100$, would you buy it?
The only portable audio variometers I've found are the Flyte Park Nanovario [100$], Sonic Non-GPS Vario [170$] and Flymaster Vario [300$].
Obviously, the Flyte Park Nanovario is the cheapest of those, right at 100$. The concerns of this vario are lack of volume or volume control and no sink tones (lift only).
For around 80$, I believe I could put into production a full featured audio-only electric variometer with an open-source code structure and portable design with a estimated battery life of 100 flight hours. It would weigh less than a pound, and could easily secure to the existing panel of the aircraft using velcro. It would feature not only lift tones, but toggable sink tones, and volume control. Customizabe lift/sink tone thresholds would also be present, being an open source platform.
This is of course assuming that the demand would be high enough to start production.
And there lays my dilemma. So you tell me, /r/gliding. Would you buy it?
Hey everyone, i am having trouble using this thing. everytime i try to use it it says it can't be used right now; i have tried it in so many different locations, but i just can't get it to work, please help!!
Do your worst!
It really does, I swear!
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies π

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.
This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.
If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.
Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.

This morning, my 4 year old daughter.
Daughter: I'm hungry
Me: nerves building, smile widening
Me: Hi hungry, I'm dad.
She had no idea what was going on but I finally did it.
Thank you all for listening.
