Usenet backbone checker and comparison website

Hi everybody. I created the website https://whatsmyuse.net based on the work that /u/alamoudimoh did a couple of years ago with his spreadsheet. Hope its okay I did so.

the spreadsheet by itself was a pain to use especially trying to remember the url And it is not very shareable.

It is mostly up to date but I am tweaking things here and there still but it is usable now. you can contact me on the site for updates and changes as needed but I don’t think stuff changes that often.

thanks for looking.

Tips for newer Usenet users.

These are some things I was thinking I'd post about because if feels like I see posts about these topics almost daily. Veteran Usenet users probably know most of this already and I'm speaking in general terms but I thought this would be beneficial for some new users. Quick reference on top, better explanation below. I'm not an expert but I've been using Usenet for a long time and this is what I've experienced. I hope this helps.

  1. You won't find everything you are looking for (just most) and trying to can get expensive
  2. Your second, third, fourth, etc. backbones are essentially backup
  3. Buy Blocks for 3rd, 4th, or subsequent servers and set priority on them
  4. Having a bunch of indexers doesn't hurt but you don't have to pay for them all
  5. Find Usenet forums to join
  6. Always check the providers deals link
  7. Automate
  8. Always refer to the most recent backbone map (which can change at any time)
  9. If it's not broke, don't fix it. (unless you are trying to save money)
  10. If you are not getting the speed you want, check your connections

To further expand on the points above.

  1. Usenet is driven by content people choose to upload. If it's popular, new, or has forums of loyal fans dedicated to that content, then you'll more than likely be able to find it. But if what you are looking for is old, not that popular, there are easier ways to find it, or it's so popular it's been removed, then you may be out of luck. Adding more servers may help in a few instances but you often end up spending extra money for that last 1 to 5% of content that you weren't able to complete from your primary server. Automation, Blocks, Indexers, and forums can help in this regard without spending a whole lot of extra money. See topics below.
  2. Your primary usenet server should pick up most of your content. If you want to make sure your primary picks up most of what's been uploaded, get an unlimited server that has 4800+ days retention and promises 99.9% completion, like certain servers on the Omicron backbone. If you pick up a backbone with less retention as your primary, you'll need a secondary to pick up the remaining retention until the 4800+ days. Many servers also use an algorithm to filter out less popular posts and delete them from their servers, this will cause failures when you go to download them. I would recommend an Omicron Server as either a primary or secondary server if you are hoping to pick up older/rare content, for this very reason. If you have a 4800

Usenet-ing on rented equipment from ISP

We’re moving to a new state pretty soon here. I’ve used a modem I purchased for my entire life out of paranoia that I might compromise my Usenet downloading situation by giving up that control. It looks like in our new area, if I want fiber and unlimited data, I’m restricted to using the hardware provided by the ISP in our area or pay significantly more per month for the β€œluxury” of using my own hardware.

I wanted to gauge others’ experiences here with downloading from Usenet on ISP-provided hardware and what reservations they might have that I may or may not have considered yet. Do you feel like you’d have to operate even more carefully? How would this affect your behavior on Usenet?

Thanks!

Edit: Thanks again everyone! It’s good to know that my paranoia about these ISP rentals isn’t really based on anything factual. I’ve just read so many anecdotes of people getting C&Ds over the years that anything that feels like letting your guard down just seems foolish. Glad I’ve been overreacting.

I’ll definitely make sure all my SSL connections are enabled and use common sense to cover my bases when we get setup again. I appreciate all of your responses!

Ready to spin up my Usenet VM - some questions

I'm ready to spin a new ESXi VM for my usenet server. As a start it'll run the following apps Dockerized inside an Ubuntu VM:

  • Sabnzbd
  • Sonarr
  • Couchpotato
  • Plex (transcoding may happen here)

I’ve got an i5 NUC with the following specs:

  • Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-10210U CPU @ 1.60GHz

  • 32GB of RAM

  • 1TB SSD (I will add more once I get the initial set-up going)

  • How much resource should I allocate to the this VM? Cores, RAM, etc..

  • Is it critical to passthrough the integrated graphics card to the VM? I’ve read it’s a bit tedious

  • Thick provisioning? Thin provisioning?

  • Any other general recommendations?

Notes:

  • I already have 2 VMs running on minimal allocations.

Understanding some technical aspects of Usenet

Hi guys.

I'm not so newbie but still can't understand some details about Usenet technology.

Here is my questions:

  1. For example, I'm posting some encrypted binaries to alt.binaries.test by provider #1. Who owns files, who can delete it - provider #1, group moderator or someone else? Other provider #2 can delete my posts?
  2. How mirroring works? I mean when I posted something it will be mirrored by all providers? I can't really imagine scope of all usenet archives.

Regards.

Do people use usenet for discussion any more?

Maybe I'm thinking wrong, but I remember usenet as a place where people could go and talk about things.

I've recently come back to it trying to find discussions due to the excess of censorship on most standard platforms, but I have tried some "newsreaders" and they all seem geared toward file sharing.

Do people not use usenet for discussions any more, or are there any clients on MacOS that are good for this usecase?

Thanks for any help!

Vote (shill manipulation) on r/usenet posts

Just as a note, because I think its kind of crazy someone would pay to do this, but there is a massive vote manipulation happening right now in this subreddit.

Two of our deals from today are quickly being downvoted by someone.

For example:

Now we are just talking about internet points here, so that part of it is really no big deal. However, for people who sort based on "Hot", this means these two threads will not show up. For example, Frugal BF Deals shows up second for me (has 117 positive votes) because nobody has targeted that thread.

I realize the mods have limited access to control this type of activity, so really all I want the community to understand is that this type of thing goes on and I encourage everyone in the subreddit who reads through our information to take this into account when making your purchasing decisions.

[WebTV, Usenet, 90s internet] Who was Aylana: graphic designer, businesswoman, museum director and Norwegian princess?

First of all, thank you to a kind redditor who recommended me to post this here! I'm not exactly sure it falls within the purview of this subreddit, but it could be interesting to you all. I originally posted this on r/InternetMysteries over a year ago, where it gained a fair amount of traction.

Spend enough time on the internet, and you'll start to notice patterns. What do these three graphics have in common? All of them show up in the first few rows upon searching Google for "glitter graphics", and it is likely that similar software was used to animate each of them. But you probably wouldn't think to attribute a designer's name to the stock glitter animation. Yet a name can be found: all three images use the same glitter tile graphic, designed by somebody named Mica.

The early internet was based on a sense of collaboration; often graphics were considered to be common property, and webmasters often learned HTML simply by copying bits of other people's code. Aylana and Dan created many variations of the same graphic, putting them on their own websites. It's hard to tell if the ones I linked used Mica's originals or one of the modified versions, but we will be interested in Aylana, in particular, for another reason.

This is a mystery that has been with me, in some shape or form, since 2007. As far as I know it has not been discussed anywhere else on the internet. I still remember exactly where it was that I first discovered Aylana's name, so let's start from there.

In 2007, the virtual pet site Neopets was still at the height of its popularity. At that time there was a thriving community of Neopets fansites, which were mostly developed by teenage girls who had learned HTML and CSS from the tutorials on Neopets. The scope of this community was immense, and most nostalgic recollections, while accurate in describing how it launched the careers of many female web developers today, completely fail to capture its scale. At some point, there were literally hundreds of fansites with names that were various permutations of "Neo" and common words: names like SnowyNeo, FadingNeo and NeoIce.

Most of these webs

Do I need usenet in addition to torrents?

The last couple of years I see the Black Friday deals and think that maybe I should finally start using usenet. But then I get overwhelmed by all the different trackers and providers and just give up. But I always end up with a case of FOMO.

But here's the thing: I rarely run into issues with availability or speed when using public torrent trackers. I guess I'm never looking for any old or non-mainstream Linux ISOs. I use a VPN, also.

So if I'm finding everything I need, in a timely manner, and my download speeds are good.... Am I missing out on anything by not using Usenet? This isn't a "convince me to use Usenet" post, I'm actually curious if there's some benefit for me that I'm missing.

Usenet for beginners

Hi r/usenet,

I am new to usenet and came here because torrents are to dangerous and OCHs became shit.

I am now trying to understand how usenet works. Maybe one of you can enlighten me. Right now I am using a one year plan for "newshosting" to access the usenet and a one year plan of "nzbgeek" to have a good overview in the files because the search in the newshosting-app does not give me good results.
Some downloads dont work (very slow) - some are great. I try to look at the thumbs up and down in geek. This seems to correlate with the availiability of the files.

I have now seen, that many of you use many different providers and many different indexers. I can not imagine how (one app for every provider?) and why.

Could someone explain? What is the gold way, most of you use?

Thx :)

Usenet Provider Combo Recommendations?

I’m new to the Usenet world, I’ve already searched and found out what is, how to use it, the basics of what to look for in a provider, etc. And I’m just now starting on my quest to transition from torrenting to purchasing my first provider combo.

Currently I’ve been torrenting around 500GB-1TB a month of only movies and tv shows, and usually never more than 15-20 downloads at a time with my Sonarr and Radarr setup. I’m just looking for a simple combo just to get started, that would work for what I currently am already doing.

It seems like most decent provider offers the same basic specs (4K+ retention, unlimited speed, unlimited downloads, connections, etc) Does it just come down to price at this point?

Any help with some recommendations and why you recommend them would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Satya Nadella 's mundane Sept 1992 USENET post looking for a roommate in Seattle before joining Microsoft

Discovered something very interesting today on usenet archive.

Have not seen any post referencing this online, so thought this should be interesting for our sub. A fantastically mundane post from the future CEO of Microsoft, a few months before he got started in his job.

https://preview.redd.it/pluelplipp881.png?width=2398&format=png&auto=webp&s=9d144c3bf61f45e68149acfe7050667850557d79

The ordinariness of this could possibly inspire us as we enter a new year. An uncertain year.

Indian and Indian-diaspora folks tend to ambitious, scrappy, and rooted-perhaps those are few of several reasons they have achieved success.

I definitely don't intend to extrapolate this to some kind of cheesy messaging wherein any talented, hard working individual would reach great heights. Or worse- extrapolate that any talented, hard working individual is condemned to perpetual failure. Both are obviously untrue.

The truth is that 99.99 % of us won't be remembered in any appreciable, tangible way beyond the next immediate generation. Not by our families, and most certainly not our colleagues at work.

That shouldn't deter us in our pursuit of excellence. In our profession, and in our relationships with loved ones. Dare I say pursuit of excellence should be our dharma. The ripple effects emanating will only herald better days for Bharat.

Different note - soc.culture.indian usenet archives possibly have very interesting nuggets yet to be discovered!

Google archive link

By the way - Satya's post didn't elicit any response- at least not publically. Hence, only he can confirm if this post was a flop or not.

Usenet was before my time on the internet.

Would definitely love to know more from folks who were active in that era.

Searching through archives, it looks like it was an interesting melting pot of all sorts of conversations- at least in the early 90's.
