Do multiple tracheas make sense for bio-engineered species?

So I'm writing a short story that involves some future transhumans, and I've gotten a little hung up on one detail; multiple tracheas.

In addition to their regular trachea, they have one on either side of their neck, terminating in a cephalopod-like siphon just below the ear. The purpose of the redundant tracheas is to eliminate the risk of asphyxiation from a blockage. The beings typically breathe through their lateral tracheas and only exhale from the original trachea when speaking or inhale through it when smelling. The purpose of the siphons is to form an airtight seal over a breathing tube for spacewalks and whatnot. The tracheas themselves do bulge out a little bit, as I figured there's limited real estate available inside the neck for extra parts.

I understand that this would never evolve naturally. It's too big and complex a change, and in the absence of some sort of Heimlich-pocalypse, there would never be anywhere near enough selective pressure for it.

My question then is if you were bio-engineering a species from scratch, is there any reason why this just flat out wouldn't work or be a terrible idea?

[Help] Collapsed Trachea

Hello! I am very worried about my Chi having a collapsed trachea.

Some information about her is that she is 2 years old, I can't remember when she first stared doing this. She is a full blood chihuahua. And we got her for free from a lady, and as far as we know she didn't have any health problems. Lastly, lately I have been using a collar, and since I go to school and we have an apartment with no backyard, she is puppy pad trained. So she doesn't go out all the time, but I try and take her out once a day or every other day. She ends up tugging and stuff. Trying to run and when the leash runs out of length she'll choke herself and I try and stop the behavior, but I just recently found out that you're not supposed to use collars on them and that it can cause a collapsed trachea.

Anyways, she's still honking. My sister said that's normal with little dogs. And then today I got nervous and worried because she was honking for longer, and looked like she was having trouble swallowing. I asked mom, she said that my chi is fine. Another thing that worries me lately, was when I came home from a friend's house, she had puked. Sometimes after drinking too fast she'll cough up the water. Sometimes it's just saliva. I just can't ignore this anymore. I can't tell if I'm overreacting or not but I love her to death. I am only 16 so I can't do anything on my own account.

Overall, I was wondering if anyone has any advice, knows what is going on, may have a clue?? I really hope it's not a collapsed trachea but when I look it up it seems likely. I would appreciate it if someone would please comment and let me know. I am just flipping out. We don't have much money for a vet, so I need to know if this is truly vet worthy so that we're not wasting out money. I just feel horrible and hate seeing her honk :(.

Thank you for anyone that took the time to read this.

Does chest CT include the trachea ?

36 year old , male , 145 lbs, 5"7 Currently on PPI, buspar, breo

My pulmonologist ordered a chest CT and the results were unremarkable from the thoracic inlet through lung bases + liver and adrenals. BUT, my chief complaint is the neck.

About 6 months ago, I had sudden onset of squeezing/ tapping pressure around the jugular notch when I exhale and it's quite intense at times. The weirdest part is, it will last for a second and then gone. Comes at random times and feels like I'm choking a little.

Already gone through PPI, steroid inhaler, SSRI. Pulmonary function test is borderline withing range. EKG normal, pulse O2 measured daily is normal. So Pulmo ordered a chest CT, when the office called me to tell me my insurance approved the scan, I asked if the neck area would be included and the staff said yes up to the gland, I assume it's the thyroid glands. But when I got the report it mentioned nothing, is it because it's unremarkable ? Or the f up and I should give them a call to track down my pulmo, because of covid they are quite busy and take weeks to be seen.

History of vaping Smoking on and off, smoked for 2 to 3 months and won't smoke for years..

Thank you for the advice in advance.

Swallowing directly into the trachea/lungs

Hey all, I was admitted to the ER for pneumonia back in February. The ER doc thought it was infectious but I knew that wasn’t the case as I have been struggling with digestive symptoms for several months and believe I’m swallowing directly into my lungs. Also the antibiotics they gave me didn’t heal me.

I constantly have this burning back nerve pain in my upper back across my shoulder blades that can only be explained by swallowing into my lungs. I also hear bubbling/gas in my upper back and liquid.

I’ve even inhaled liquid on purpose to see if it would trigger my cough reflex and it didn’t. I’m scared as this means that I’ve been continuously swallowing into my lungs with no known cause for months now.

I have GERD and gastritis which I know can cause reflux and dysphagia but the thing is my pneumonia was in the lower lobes of my left lung (close to my stomach). The doctor said that aspiration pneumonia is typically in the right upper lung.

Anyway does anyone not have a gag reflex and swallow directly into their lungs as opposed to aspirating? I am trying to come up with solutions with my doctor but I’m not there yet. I also still don’t know the cause of my lack of cough reflex yet.

Thank you.

Help! Dog constantly coughs from Collapsing Trachea

My senior dog has recently been diagnosed with a Collapsing Trachea. My vet has told me to give him Robutussin twice daily. So far I have not seen an improvement, he constantly coughs. I would love for him to be able to go 30 min without coughing. He will cough even if he is just sitting still.

Any tips for how to make him more comfortable would be greatly apreciated.

Collapsed Trachea?

I have a terrier mix who is about 12 yrs old. He is a bit overweight. The only medical issue he has ever had in his life is some tooth rot and he had a couple teeth removed. Today out of no where he started coughing and hacking. When he is calm and resting, no coughing. But if he barks or I pick him up too fast he will start coughing. Its different than a kennel cough cough and I think he may have a collapsed trachea. Is a honking cough a symptom of anything else or am I correct to assume its probably a collapsed trachea?

If he does have a collapsed trachea would the most humane thing to do is euthanizing him?

any advice is welcome

(Vet is closed until Monday, that is why I am on here in the meantime)

Strange cough from my trachea?

Hi! so, i'm (16M) positive to covid19 and I'm on day 4.

I have this strange cough that starts from my trachea (I think) like where ur chest starts and ur neck ends, and not from my lungs.

It feels like that when I breath the air is very dry and cold if that's make sense and when i breath in or when i talk, laugh etc I have to caugh and when I breath with my mouth open I feel very nauseous.

otherwise I can breathe "normally", I don't need to take deep breaths and I dont have air hunger

(my oxygen levels are pretty normal, 97-99) I'm vitamin d deficient too and I take 1000mg a day

did this happen to you too?

Small dog harnesses to protect against collapsed trachea.

Hello! I have a 17 week old pomeranian- he is 3.6 pounds and currently in a kitten harness. If anyone has experience with harnesses for small breeds and can help with a recommendation I'd appreciate it. I'm concerned about collapsed trachea which poms can be prone to- do I need to worry about harnesses that come to far up on the neck? I've seen the Buddy belts but I'd prefer an easy clip closure instead of the buckle closure. I was looking at Rabbitgoo harnesses but they seem bulky. Was also looking at lupine pet harnesses. Thank you in advance!!

Questions about Collapsing Trachea/ stent surgery

Any vets here who can speak to this?

Should I be considering surgery to put a stent in their trachea? Does it typically resolve dogs breathing issues or are they still present after to a lesser extent? Is it hard for your dog to recover? How much does it usually cost?

Alternatively, how manageable is it to treat it long-term? Is cough medicine and anti-inflammatory medication enough? That is what we are doing now but he seems to be getting worse.

Any insight on this is really appreciated ❀️ I’ve done a lot of research and my dog is at the vet getting X-rays now to see how bad it is but we are considering all options. Some insight would help me feel more informed and is very much appreciated!
