Today is Day Seventy Two(!) with me not going on trains. Throwback to nicer times, 4204 at Eveleigh preparing to take half of this years Elvis Express to Thirlmere to collect the other half. I miss trains. š

The NSWGR 70 class had a successful start in their life, pulling some passenger trains before the majority of them were used on coal trains. Slowly, they were relegated to lesser tasks, becoming shunters before withdrawals. 7006 was the last one and now resides at the NSW Rail Museum in Thirlmere.

During the 50s-60s, NSW Railways were having trouble getting lots of passengers around in peak-hour capacity. After a trip to France, many concepts were built until 1968, when four of these double-deck motor cars were constructed. C 3804 is now preserved at Thirlmere, the inside explorable for all.

In 1879, the Manchester Corporation obtained royal permission to turn Thirlmere into a reservoir, flooding the valley, drowning the hamlets of Wythburn and Armboth, and submerging a shoreline rich in beauty and folklore. I climb Raven Crag and Launchy Gill in search of the ghosts of a lost world.
