A list of puns related to "Surfeit"
I've found myself with a surfeit, abundance, plethora, boatload of greens. I'm trying to find alternatives to the delicious but usual greens, beans and cornbread that I grew up on. I've got collards, escarole, fennel, mustard greens and romaine. I honestly may have left something out.
I can make salad with the romaine and maybe the escarole, but that's going to be a load of salad. The fennel I put here because I thought someone might have a way to use the fronds (I've found nothing tasty). To go with it all, I have beets, carrots, winter squash, potatoes, broccoli and cabbage. I can go veggie or not.
Other than drowning in salad, what can I do? To make it harder, I'm currently without an oven (waiting for repair folks). I've got my cooktop and a crockpot. Should I just make 10 gallons of soup with all this stuff?
I've come upon a large stash of curry leaves - about a gallon ziplock bag, and am struggling how to use these all before they go bad besides drying them, and I'm already well supplied with dried leaves.
Can anyone recommend any recipes using tons of curry leaves - more so than the typical handful used while tempering south indian dishes?
Edit: thanks for all of the suggestions! I actually went a bit off the wall and made a kari patta pesto by blitzing a couple cups of leaves with plenty of good olive oil, salt, roasted cumin powder, black pepper, a few cloves of garlic, an inch of ginger, and a splash of coconut vinegar. Delicious with crostini as a snack (and idli the next morning!)
I read years ago about how U.S. President Zachary Taylor died unexpectedly after eating a large helping of raw cherries and ice cold milk. My understanding is that he may have actually died from cholera, and people at the time mistakenly thought the cherries caused it, though some historians and medical experts think Taylor could have died from gastroenteritis caused by the acidity of the cherries.
Tonight I was reading about Oxford Universityβs Bodleian Library, and I saw a bit about Thomas Lockey, who was Bodleyβs Librarian from 1660 to 1665. He died in 1679, of none other than a βsurfeit of cherries.β
Curious, I googled the phrase, and learned that Catherine Douglas, Duchess of Queensberry, also died of a surfeit of cherries, in 1777.
When I was only aware of Taylorβs death, I assumed the cholera story was correct, but now Iβm wondering what the experts think.
Did Taylor die of cholera, ODing on cherries, or something else?
Did people actually die from eating excessive amounts of cherries, and if so, why do we never seem to hear about that happening now?
Was the phrase βa surfeit of cherriesβ perhaps a euphemism for something more salacious, or did people at the time really think the cherries were responsible?
...are words seared into my brain 40plus years ago. I won't insult you all saying I only looked at Playboy for the articles....but I did read a few of them after I had consumed the more amusing moment.
Anyway, this Playboy short story concerned a man who had a younger lover. If I recall correctly, he purchased "time" by wearing a device behind his ear that would slow down the perception of time.
He commented to his younger lover how relaxed and seemingly long their time together was. If I recall correctly, she said something like "it flew by for me" and as she turned her head he saw a similar device behind her ear. Seemed he was "buying" time and she was "selling" time...a nice little twist. Reminds me of a more transactional kinda SR.
Anyone of my vintage recall that story? I've done a load of internet searches. Also searched on Playboy.com archives...and found they used the word surfeit on a regular basis....but that was the only vestige.

I personally have 17 pages to go and I cannot wait. I hate this chapter and how it kind of jumps all over the place throughout different times in the book. I know sometimes he does that but this chapter just seems a bit much. I also hate how everything is all rumors more than normal. Anyway please let me know.
