Spin Representation Puns

I'm trying to learn all about Lie groups and Lie algebras and their representations, but there's still some stuff I don't understand about weight space decompositions:

1. First of all, I'm still not sure I understand the motivation for taking the basis matrices of the group elements to be separated into diagonal and off-diagonal matrices. And I'm not sure how this works out to give the behaviour of a weight space and the raising and lowering matrices (and the generalisations for higher SU(n))?

2. I'm not sure how the quantisation of spins to integer-spaced [half or whole]-integer values relates to the weight space of SU(2). There must be some obvious connection since the rotations form the SU(2) group, but I'm not sure what it is.

3. Whereas the values for quantum spin projections are m = {-L, ..., +L} (separated by integers, L is a whole or half integer), the weight space of SU(2) is {-m -(m-2), ... m-2, m} for integer m. Where does this factor of 2 come from? Just convention?

I've been reading about the 16 spinorial representation of SO(10) (I guess Spin(10) would be more precise) in Physics (SUSY and compactifications to be more precise), but I find it less intuitive than other cases.

The spinorial representations of SO(3) and SO(6) are clear because the problem is reduced to finding representations of su(2) and su(4) (I'm confused if this should be the algebra or the group). Similarly, for SO(4) we can find representations of su(2)xsu(2). This means we can apply ladder operator techniques, Young tableaux, etc.

Is there a similar procedure for SO(10)? If there was a construction of it's double cover in terms of SU(n), the problem would be solved.

It’s time we took a good hard look at our party my fellow liberals. Sure it’s easy to look at republicans and make fun of their extremists, we constantly tell them how they have to own their crazies, but we need to take our own medicine too.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Chapter Six

Aaron and Erdni had been led through the ship by the marines to a hallway in front of a conference room that the marines told him would be the location of Erdni’s tribunal. Erdni bounced gently up and down on her digitigrade feet, having only just been talked down from pacing back and forth in the hallway at Aaron’s pleading.

“Erdni, why do you bounce like that?” Aaron asked, pulling his hand from his face.

“Hmm?” She replied, seeming to emerge from wherever her head had gone, “oh, you mean like this?”

Erdni began her light hopping in earnest, Aaron struggling to keep his eyes on hers. She seemed to notice his subtle glances downward and grinned wryly, continuing until Aaron sighed audibly and looked away chuckling.

“Yeah, that. Why?”

“It's a common nervous habit with my race, it helps relieve tension on our joints.”

“Eh, I guess that’s fair. Either way, it’s making me nervous. Wanna join me on the floor?” He asked from where he sat, leaned up against the wall opposite the conference room door.

“I don't think an officer should-“ she got out before Aaron cut her off.

“Erdni just sit down, you can blame it on me if anyone asks. Hey marines!” He got the attention of the duo of marines standing a few yards away, keeping an eye on the pair, “I’m the one making her sit with me if anyone asks!”

“Okay?” Sergeant Suruki responded in an affirmation and question simultaneously.

“See, the sarge’ll vouch for you, sit!” He said, gently slapping the space next to him rapidly. Erdni sighed at his antics, earning a grin from Aaron as she acquiesced.

With a huff, the mountain of a woman leaned against the smooth metal hallway wall of the ship, sliding down slowly to a seated position. She rested the back of her head against the wall with a soft thump.

“So, come here often?” Asked Aaron, desperately trying to lighten the mood.

“I’ve been on this carrier frequently, yes. Why do you ask?” Replied Erdni, confusion spreading across her face.

“It’s a uh… it’s a joke pick-up line, I’m not actually asking,” replied Aaron, mentally reminding himself that idioms don't translate.

“What’s a pick-up line?” Asked Erdni, face showing even more confusion than before.

‘Fuck. Okay.’

“A pick-up line is like, a cheesy one-liner you’d say to someone you think is cute when you meet them for the first time, at like a bar or some shit, uhhhh.” He finished dumbly, trying to find a good idiom-free way to explain what that meant.

This last year has taken a toll on the mind. Not only do you have to deal with unscrupulous immoral and illegal savagery during market hours, you have to wonder if everyone you meet is a shill.

Fortunately these shills are not immortal beings from a galaxy far far away, but mere humans who employ a system they've adopted. A system which I'm going to do my best to attempt to explain and demystify for the betterment of our humble community.

I like Harry Potter, this is basically Defense Against the Dark Arts, and the term "Dark Apes" just jumped out at me. I hope that term doesn't offend anyone. I hesitated using it. I'm not saying that any apes are shills. I'm saying shills learned to become apes. And it's helpful to look at it from this perspective so you can grasp the rest of the concepts they employ.

They've evolved. They learned the ways of the ape and essentially built a nefarious copy cat model.

They can now speak the ape language and a lot of FUD is getting through undetected because apes are on the lookout for only the most obvious shills.

Ape sees something that resembles what a fellow ape would post, ape say "seems legit" and allows it through the barrier of "New" to the road of "Rising" all the way to the mountain peak of "Hot".

Shills are now able to be apes in disguise using dark arts.

Hence, Dark Apes.

And since there's so many of them, it would be impossible to keep a list of "who's a shill" in mind. I'd imagine there to be multiple groups of them formed in teams, competing against each other for rewards and bonuses on the amount of FUD they spread.

However the shill social structure may actually be formed, if you're a shill tasked with a job of spreading FUD and targeting individual apes who appear vulnerable to a shift in opinion, you're going to need a system in place so that you don't waste time spreading FUD to one of your shill brethren by

The contract offered by Lana Wachowsky to the public is this: She is presenting you with a movie that is a real life matrix. The movie doesn't represent a Matrix movie, it is a simulacra of a Matrix movie, but it really is a Warner Bros movie. It's up to you to see through it, to understand the code and to realize the intentions of Hollywood towards you.

Once the movie begins you are welcomed with the blue Warner Bros logo.

The WB is the real antagonist, the WB is the one who wanted the movie made in the first pace. The serie was complete, so Lana Wachowsky didn't wanted to add a sequel but was kinda forced by contract to do it. It was either her doing it, or a yes-man from Hollywood would do it in her place. This is not a fiction, all those elements really happened in real life. To preserve the original message of the Matrix serie, Lana Wachowsky finally accepted to do it.

The WB is at the same time multiple characters:

• Bugs, "as in Bunny". She is Bugs Bunny, the old fashioned WB character. She welcomes Neo in the real world with a "What's up doc?" and has a carrot printed on her t-shirt. She was freed by Neo and she sees him as he really is, not as the video game designer. She has the blue hair, symbol of the control, common to all the WB characters. She digs Neo from the archives of the WB. She is not as bad as the Analyst and really wants to help Neo.

• The Analyst. He is an executive of the new WB who is fascinated by the anomaly that the Matrix franchise represents. He wanted to make more money out of the Matrix serie. He resuscitated the serie by convincing his bosses to inject a lot of money in it. He manipulates the public to milk them more, he is using all the tricks in the book to make money and he wants to keep the main characters of the Matrix serie under his control.

• Smith: He tells Neo that the Analyst appreciate his bond with Neo and turned it into a chain. He has been recalled in the movie by the analyst since he is a bankable character and the Analyst only cares about money. He is owned by the Warner Bros and obey the Analyst, even though he would like more freedom. He serves no other purpose to the story than punching and shooting people when the plot requires it.

Among other characters we have:

Neo: Neo represent Lana. Neo doesn't want to revive the "experiment". He doesn't want to fight, he doesn't want the pills, he doesn't understand what is happening around him, he doesn't use a gun, according to the an

I absolutely loved Resurrections. The meta commentary, its emotional content, how much it advances the lore, the beautiful light and shadow visuals, the oversaturated colours, the sound and music, the poignant and often hilarious dialogue, the chemistry between the entire cast, it is just pure joy. It feels like this movie is the world that Neo wanted to show to people at the end of the first movie. The more I think about it the more I get out of it.

Lana Wachowski, David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon don’t deliver fan service with Resurrections, yet the movie is respectful of its fans. Indeed, it is by not leaning on fan service and instead trying something new that the movie respects the fans of the trilogy. You can still enjoy the trilogy as its own beginning, middle and end story. Resurrections is then simultaneously the start of something new, and an epilogue to the saga. You can then reframe Reloaded and Revolutions to both become the middle point, and Resurrections the distant conclusion.

A fan service sequel would have brought back Smith via Weaving, keep Fishburne, include at least three highly choreographed action sequences, have Juno Reactor and Don Davis make the soundtrack, and put guns in Neo’s hands. It’s what I and many fans were expecting, even hoping for.

Resurrections does none of this and I'm still incredibly happy, and I think we’re better off for it, genuinely. Of course I would have welcomed Hugo Weaving and Laurence Fishburne back, but without them, the focus of the movie is Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss and the love story between Neo and Trinity.

Since Revolutions, Lana has worked on V for Vendetta, Speed Racer, Cloud Atlas, Jupiter Ascending, Sense8. She has grown and changed, and Resurrections reflects that. She made it with now long time collaborators and friends David Mitchell, Aleksandar Hemon, Tom Tykwer, Johnny Klimek. I would have loved to hear Don Davis compose new themes, but I love Tom Tykwer and Johnny Klimek’s new themes. There’s hope and joy to the new music.

It’s a love letter to fans of the trilogy that trades fan service for representation. As a sequels fan that got to read a lot of hate over the years, I felt extremely seen in this movie. I'm the Neo-ologist, and I'm Jude at the start of the movie talking about how he grew up on it. I felt brought into its world and acknowledged by Lana, David and Aleksander. What better gift for long-time fans than to include them in the movie? I feel honored, like it is

Do your worst!

I know there has been lots of discussion of the first cishet male queen being cast, and I understand why. I just want to point out and celebrate that we have the first type one diabetic queen, and only the second contestant in 14 seasons and like twelve hundred international spin-offs to be openly living with a disability. [Yvie was the first.] Kids who grow up with type one rarely get to see ourselves on screen, and the few times we do, it’s like Julia Roberts in Steel Magnolias, where the entire point of the character’s existence is the diabetes and/or a tragic early death. I am so excited to see somebody who uses an insulin pump and deals with the issues that come with having a useless pancreas succeed in drag, and bring excellence while living with this disease. Most people don’t understand type one, and still think we’re all fat and/or something we ate caused our disease, that we can’t eat sugar or carbs, etc, and I know just by being there Daya will challenge a lot of those incorrect and harmful beliefs about T1. I’m so excited for representation on Drag Race. I finally get to see somebody like me on screen. 💛💛💛

Edit 2: Wow, there are a lot more queens with disabilities than I thought! Thanks to the commenters who filled me in. Daya is the first T1, but it seems she is nowhere near the second physically disabled queen on the show. Regardless, positive media representation of any disability is pretty few and far between, and I’m glad we’ll get to see Daya this season. ❤️

The one known as Gaelic groaned and threw back the cozy covers, revealing more pale skin. The inhabitant of this living quarters was a human woman - one that wasn’t fond of how the other beings on this space station disregarded her need for undisturbed leisure periods. It was especially irritating on this night as it led into a highly regarded holiday for most humans.

She got up from her bunk and put on the first random clothing items she got her hands on, finishing the task of preparation for work by pulling a tight-fitting sweater over her head. Her voluminous head of hair gave resistance to this particular piece of clothing, but that was a fight she won quickly. The red strands bounced happily upon being freed and Gaelic was ready for work.

“Good morning Neyhall”, she said to the smaller being that had woken her up as she followed them along a curved corridor.

A little while later the duo had reached the communications room, which was the main hub for all activities regarding the exploration drones driving, floating and swimming on the planet below.

Two more beings also of the species Atun’gekai had been in obvious anticipation of Gaelic’s arrival and immediately greeted her by waving with slightly too much emphasis to appear natural. She nonetheless waved back and then waited for Neyhall to explain the situation.

“Look here”, Neyhall pointed at the large central screen that showed a map of some mountainous terrain that they zoomed in on a nondescript place, “Angua had a failure of the autonomous drive system and we were unable to resolve it. Her location in this sector puts her at high risk towards an extreme weather event we anticipate to develop within this day.”

When the small alien had used the nickname for the exploration rover that Gaelic had given them in private to replace the original the alpha-numerical designation, she couldn’t stop a smirk that then only grew wider as they also used proper pronouns for the machine.

“But Angua was among those with the production issue. We fixed her already, didn’t we?”

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.

I love vampires and am working on a vampire book myself, so I figured it was time to tackle a classic – in a bizarre coincidence, I just started reading the book the evening before the news about Anne Rice's passing.

#Review

• I don't usually read books for their prose, but I have to say that the absolutely delicious descriptions of the vampires, their cravings and their experiences are a core selling point of this one.
• When I say I like vampires, these are the type of vampires I mean. No shade on modern interpretations and creative spins on vampire myths, but this – dangerous, seductive, coffin-inhabiting, morally conflicted – is my shit.
• The book also reminded me of GRRM's Fevre Dream a lot, from parts of the setting to general vibes, to the melancholy tone... not sure if the resemblance is deliberate on Martin's part, but they definitely go well together.
• Claudia as a character (a five year old turned vampire, growing up mentally but remaining in a child's body) creeps me the absolute fuck out. Have you recently seen a five year old? It would have been creepy enough if she was like 10, but 5 is basically a toddler aaaaaarghg. (That's not criticism, this is very much deliberate and it works, I just kinda hate it a bit)
• Simon Vance does a stellar job with the audiobook narration. I don't always love him, but I definitely loved him in this.
• If there's anything I'd consider a real flaw, it's the pacing in the second half. Once the story leaves New Orleans, it lacks focus for a while (maybe partly deliberate?) and feels a bit slow as a result.
• This book is such a special mix of being sensual and sexy while having no sex whatsoever. I find it fascinating on one hand, but I'm also someone who loves books that do sex well, so like... love that this exists, but also pls give me books where vampires are this sexy AND actually sexual.

First, a little background. Plato’s Cave is an allegory/thought experiment recorded some time in the 500’s AD by (spoilers) Plato.

The idea is thus: Think of a group of people who have been chained up in a cave since childhood, bound so they cannot look anywhere except the wall in front of them.

These people watch shadows on the wall, made from objects passing in front of a fire behind them. These shadows become the prisoners' reality, all that these people know. They give names to the shadows and make up stories about them, but only we, the omniscient reader, know that they are not accurate representations of the real world.

The philosopher, according to Plato, is like one of these prisoners who has learned to free himself and leave the cave, determining that there are higher levels of reality than what he thought he knew. But those left behind do not wish to join him, because it is the only existence they have known.

Obviously when using this concept as a whisper, we don’t talk about the philosopher being the freed subject, but humans in general. Compare aliens to the ones chained up, us as the ones outside the cave, and ‘whispers’ as they know it, are just us showing them a higher level of reality. And the shadows? They can be anything we want them to be.

The hypothesis given by m/calm_ur_tits is that this thought will effectively ‘prime’ an alien. Thinking of the prisoners in the cave will cause them to subconsciously draw parallels with their own sense of security in their current position, politically and existentially.

From there you can pivot to break the alien away from whatever secure concept they already have embedded in their psyche. Want to shatter an alien’s ancient, unbendable loyalty to its mother nation? Guess what ET? What you *tho

Heard they've been doing some shady business.

It has been almost 5 years since I stumbled across the live action BL / Yaoi genre and this got me thinking about what are the pioneering/ groundbreaking BLs that I consider classics because they featured some ‘first’:

• Lovesick (2014): this was the first Thai series that featured a BL couple as the main couple. Before that, one of the first BL representations was in film (Love of Siam). Love sick series launched the careers of both leads and many of the actors in the series as side characters can be seen as leads or sides in other production
• SOTUS (2016): The first BL from GMMTV and also the first Thai BL to break into the Thai mainstream. SOTUS is the progenitor for many things associated with Thai BL such as engineering students, university freshmen competition and pink milk. It is definitely a classic BL and it amazing how much Thai BL has evolved in the 5 years since SOTUS.
• Addicted (2016): This Chinese web series was so popular that it managed to get Chinese BLs banned by the censors permanently. Before Addicted there were other Chinese BL web series that were more explicit and raunchier but this one seems to have rubbed the censors the wrong way the most. Since then, we have had to contend with Chinese bromances.
• HIStory 1 (2017) This popular Taiwanese anthology started off with 3 different storylines all featuring BL couples. Since then, there have been 6 other series all featuring a range of relationships….stepbrothers in love seems to be a popular topic with this anthology 😬..
• 2 Moons (2017): The first BL to feature multiple couples. It paved the way for many others like My Engineer, 2 Moons 2, Gen Y and Why R U.
• Together with Me (2017) This was the first Thai spin-off where a side couple who featured in another series (Bad Romance) got their own series to explain their backstory.
• Dark Blue Kiss (2019) : This series is unique in the sense that it is 3rd series featuring the same BL couple Pete and Kao
• Where our eyes linger (2019) This was the first of the short South Korean BL series and still one of the best. It is also unique in that one of the leads in this series features in 2 other series. Also a side character in this series plays the same. character in another series - To My Star.
• 2 Gether (2020) love it, hate it or blame the pandemic but 2 Gether was the first Thai BL to break through to the international mainstream.
