A list of puns related to "Sphagnum"
whats the best place/website to purchase bulks of sphagnum moss?
I got into carnivores a couple of years ago and most of the advice was peat, perlite, and New Zealand long fibre Sphagnum, in various combinations.
I went the peat mix route at first knowing full well it wasn't a sustainable option and I felt guilty about it. I then changed to dead dried sphagnum but this was imported from New Zealand and only made me feel a bit less guilty. I eventually found a UK supplier of live sphagnum who gets their moss under licence from Forrestry Commission woodland. It is half the price of peat and isn't imported from half way round the world. My plants are very happy growing in it and I feel a lot less guilty about using peat that destroys the bog environments of the plants we are growing.
I know that there are carnivore enthusiasts here from all over the world and that cost and availability matter to us all.
So, what do you use as the main 'ingredient' in your soil mixes? What makes you choose that ingredient over another?
I'm genuinely interested in peoples choices and what is available where you live and cost etc, and whether or not it works for your plants.
I feel really lucky that I have found a local, cheap alternative to peat and I was wondering if others around the world have similar guilty feelings, or have found differnt or better alternatives.
I'm not looking for a slap fight about what's 'best' or 'worst'. Just what is available where you are, is it cheaper or more expensive? Does it work better for your plants or not?
FYI the sale of peat is about to be made illegal in the UK.
Started several prop boxes a few weeks ago. Iβve been opening them for about an hour every 3 days and rehydrating the moss about once a week. Any advice is appreciated.

I initially set up my enclosures using some pretty green (Galapagos brand, I think?) sphagnum moss for reptiles - but I've noticed it dries out extremely quickly. I feel like I'm having to spray it down almost every day. So I think that either a) it's not actually sphagnum, or b) it's just really bad at moisture retention.
Does anyone have recommendations for some moss that both looks good, and still retains humidity well?
Hello, I grow phals for almost 2 years, and I wanted to talk with someone expert. I have never used sphagnum moss. I want to make a pot mix from stuff that I can find in my area. I live in Greece/Crete, we have a lot air humidity in the atmosphere here.
So my mix so far is: 50% bark 20% charcoal 20% peat 10% small stones
All my phals (I have 4 so far) are ready to bloom in the middle of winter so I consider they are happy enough.
So how about that, is it a problem at all not to use sphagnum moss?
Just wondering if it has beneficial properties for the growth of plants
Where do you get yours?!
