A list of puns related to "Space Empires"
4X newbie here. I've owned CIV IV and Galactic Civ III, but other than that, I'm new.
I'm looking at getting either of the two games listed in the title, I can get either full collection for like $25.
I've watched a few videos that talk about each game, but I just can't seem to gleam which one I'd like more.
As this subreddit seems like THE place to ask, which game do you prefer? What are the pros and cons of each?
Sorry, I know this seems like a very low-effort post, but the steam winter sale ends tomorrow and it's waay late tonight, so I'm tired and running out of time. Thank you very much for your time and opinions!
Hello all,
sorry for the mouthful title lol. for some reason, i have the sudden interest in a romance book that is centered around the romance between those in high society, preferably royals. the setting could be a simple romance between royals. (More on the serious side, not really a royalty version of many modern romance types). What i am really interested in though is a story like this that is set in a science fiction intergalactic empire. I have seen some manga / anime before (such as Legend of galactic heroes, which is set in a futuristic space empire with a 19th century style of royalty).
If anyone has any suggestions and/or any tips on where i can find more books in either of these settings, i would greatly appreciate it!
Are there any RTS games similar to Star Wars: Empire at War, that are a bit more modern?I really love the game Planetary Annihilation: TITANS, but it doesn't really offer any space combat like in Empire at War.
I'll be happy with anything honestly :D

... keep reading on reddit β‘So as the title states, letβs say the Imperium has had enough of the Tauβs existence and wants to drop the hammer. The Guard is busy so the just put out a call to all available chapters. How many do you think it would take? What composition do you think would be best? And letβs assume they attempt to take the worlds, not just Exterminatus them.
Edit: So general consensus is somewhere between, βThey couldnβt because theyβre useless without the Guard to support themβ and βThe Black Templarsβ. So kinda what I expected π
I've been thinking about this idea for a Protogen fursona that's like a Black Ops or Special Forces Spy/Assassin and I feel like It would be good to know more about where Protogens originated from for the sake of the character's lore.
Space travel isn't going to be fun like Star Wars; it will be truly miserable.
The only place humans are supposed to live is Earth, and even this place tries to kill us a bunch.
Training to go to space is akin to getting used to living in a maximum-security prison but ten times worse. (Guantanamo Bay comes to mind.)
Everything works against humans living in space, and the only way to survive is to dwell in submarine equipment 24/7.
We need to invest in Earth before even thinking about investing in space colonies like Mars.
We, as antinatalists, know that life is suffering anyway, so we all collectively shake our heads at these idiots, hoping that one day their kids will get to drink beer with aliens.
Life will still be bad anywhere humans go, so it's better to stop existing as nonexistence is perfect.
Real-life space is boring and dangerous. All these billionaires and space devotees wish to be Luke Skywalker, and it's criminal how much they waste trying to get that impossible dream.
Edit: I mistakenly put βnotβ in front of nonexistence.
I know it has probably been done a lot but I decided to play as the Roman Empire but in space! I used the closest color to tyrian purple for the empire flag/map color. I accidently had an expansionist game because of a lot of aggressive neighbors who spawned near me. My long term ally eventually decided to become the crisis when I chose to become the custodian and I had to take them out. I eventually declared the Galactic Imperium in 2436! Now I have embraced the war like aspect that has been this entire run and now I am on a quest to subjugate as many empires as possible because why not? The Empress of the empire has basically been alive since the beginning of this game and has not died. She is not immoral, I am just lucky with events and tech. This run has been really weird for me...
I mean..sadly there are no mechanics for raiding trade right? I would love to make an aquatic space pirate empire and just steal ppls trade
Between the new Dune movie and Apple+'s Foundation series coming out, I'm reminded by how much I enjoy the idea of a far future Human interstellar nation/government/empire. It seems like a setting that's more or less fallen out of favor in recent times, with the exceptions of enduring properties such as the aforementioned Dune, Foundation, and the ever-present Imperium of Man in Warhammer 40k.
Does anyone have any recommendations for books with this kind of setting?
I've read a big chunk of Legends of the Galactic Heroes and the first of Scalzi's Collapsing Empire, but I'm personally not big on either. I also still intend to track down the Miles Vorkosigan books, which from what I understand aren't quite what I'm looking for here but are close.
I'm also not looking for recs for Honor Harrington. I've tried it, and I might again in the future, but it's not what I'm looking for with this post.
EDIT: Aliens are optional.
EDIT2: I also recently read Tchaikovsky's new Shards of Earth book, so you don't need to rec that either.

Question that I put in the title for some reason
This may go as follows:
backup/ Data/ Docs/ Empires/ Fonts/ GameSetups/ GameTypes/ history/ maps/ Music/ Pictures/ SavedEmpires/ SaveGame/ Scenarios/ Sounds/ Temp/ Utility/
(I don't understand formatting, so the / just seperate the names for readability.)
Any of the folders you don't find, you'll have to create and name manually - name the folders as seen above.
Go to your main steam folder and make a copy of steam.dll, leave the file itself there of course. Add a copy of it to your main SE5 folder, because that was missing from the installation too.
This may be optional, but while I could run the game in fullscreen, it would always freeze when trying to generate a map. I recommend you play in windowed mode, as that seems to help some problems. More on windowed mode below.
Run it in Windows 8 compatability mode - this is shamelessly stolen info from some old forum post.
Now in theory you should be good to go. However, playing it windowed kind of sucks with the preset window size. The fix here is to go to your main SE5 folder, find the data folder and then, inside it search for HUDsettings.txt . There you can set the dimensions for the window - note: This requires experimentation. I normally have a 1920x1080 resolution, but the game sort of scales up a bit in windowed mode. My settings are 1525x800 (also old forum info), which is close to fullscreen for me.
Additionally, I recommend hiding the windows bar at the bottom so you can stretch the window further (looks nicer too).
(As for FPS, I don't have any trouble - however I've heard that 'ClearType' makes the game run alot less smoothly. It's easily disabled by typing 'clear' in the windows search bar to find the setting.)
I hope this'll have helped someone out in the future. Further FPS fixes may be found plentiful elsewhere, but I haven't quite seen any post containing all of this info combined, so here goes.
Hi, I'm getting back into the hobby and had a bunch of old models from about 4th Edition 40k / 6th edition WHF, and some LOTR. I'll be honest, they're not well assembled and certainly not well painted, and some are damaged. But I'm not using them, so I wanted to see if anyone was interested. I'm currently collecting Sisters of Battle and maybe Primaris Space Marines, so that's what I'm looking for in trades right now. Most of these models are badly painted, or just primed, see pics for details. There's also some pretty badly kitbashed models in there too, so no trouble if people aren't interested in them, but let's see.
This is also my first time posting here so please let me know if there's anything else I have to put here!

Whenever I play the space stage the first ~7-8 empires I find are normal. After that, the empires are all copies of other ones with the same name and colour.
I was wondering if there's a way to get more unique empires? I tried creating my own space stage creatures in the creator and I haven't seen them so I don't think that works.
So I remember this game my older brother played when I was young.
It was an empire building game set in space (like Stellaris). You needed to develop your planets and could see how they looked in an isometric view from above. If memory serves me correct you could even micro manage where certain buildings should be built. I believe you could also fight ground battles with vehicles but that could be imagination.
Building space stations was possible as well as terraforming entire planets to better suit your preferred climate or looks.
Combat was handled with different sized ships ranging from small fighters to capital ships. In space I remember one race later on unlocking some sort of lightning cannons which wreacked absolute havoc. It had espionage ( agents would be sent on missions they could even defect or be a double agent) and diplomacy functions but I can't remember a lot about them.
I distinctly remember one event that could happen though. There was an alien race that sold you a device which was supposedly able to move planets around. After buying this device your scientists took a while to study it to determine if it was safe to use. After they've finished their research they found common household appliances inside the contraption and that your citizens would be quite unhappy to sit on a something that amounts to a giant bomb even if it was theoretically possible to move planets with that device.
