What animal ate the flowers off my scarlet runner beans in Houston zone 8b/9a?
Planted scarlet runner beans and the flowers were gorgeous! But it never set any beans. Not a single one.
Eventually I noticed the red flower heads were getting eaten off by something. New ones were always emerging then would be eaten off the next day or two. Anyone know what animal does this?
(We have an abundance of squirrels, grey wood rats, cardinals, wild birds, etc but the garden has a 7 foot tall fence with rabbit proof wire which does keep out bunnies & deer. Flowers were eaten from all over, including the very top ones at the top of a 5 foot trellis. I suspected birds but I’m not sure…)
I grew scarlet runner beans for the flowers, but left a few pods on the most vigorous plants to produce seed for next year. This one's a keeper.

Pepper cooked Rancho Gordo Scarlet Runners in this take on red beans and rice. @beckandbulow has a great line of bison products, including this andouille, which are low in fat and high in flavor. And the scarlet runners were big, meaty, flavorful. A great meal!

Scarlet Runner Beans: No pollinators?
So it's my first season growing in Ontario (zone 5a), and my Alberta-adapted Scarlet Runner Beans have put out beautiful flowers for the past several weeks, but so far none seem to have been fertilized and no beans are growing. I'm wondering if these guys are missing an essential pollinator, or if they are fussy about the shift in climate. Has anyone had any luck growing this varietal in Ontario? (Thanks in advance)

What is this? Northern California volunteer, it started out small, and as it was something I had never seen before, I decided to let it grow on the planter I’m letting sit fallow. It is now 4ft+ tall, and quite large. The red flowers are from the Scarlet Runner Bean. I have never seen this before.
