How do you deal with the contradiction between Lenin's 'revolutionary defeatism' and Mao's United Front?
Lenin argued that revolutionaries, when face with imperialist war, should work to encourage the defeat of their domestic government, even at the cost of making deals with imperialists (e.g. the Brest-Litovsk Pact). This strategy was ultimately successful in sparking the October Revolution and the Russian Civil War.
However, rather than compromising with the Japanese to defeat the Kuomintang, Mao formed a United Front with Nationalist China to push the Japanese out. This also led to victory in the civil war and the creation of a proletarian state.
So which is right? Obviously, the material conditions are what need to be examined, but I'm having a hard time understanding what was so different between the German invasion of the Russian Empire and the Japanese invasion of China that it merited the opposite strategy.
How were Lenin and Mao able to determine which strategy was applicable for their conditions, and how will future revolutionaries do the same?
