Learning Polynesian navigation as a foreigner

Hello everyone, I hope you’re all well. With my bachelor's degree coming to a close I’ve been looking for different opportunities on what I shall do after my degree. With the last 1 Β½ years being quite tough academically, primarily because of the COVID-19 pandemic I have especially looked into completely different occupations before I continue my academic career.

I have always been fascinated by astronomy and recently I have also gotten increasingly interested in Polynesian history. With these two interests interlinking, I stumbled across the topic of Polynesian navigation by the stars and sailing a while back and have been immensely fascinated since. With that being said I was wondering if there is any way to travel to French Polynesia to learn Polynesian navigation for a longer period of time (about 1 year)? Are there any official schools that teach this type of navigation by the stars? Is there a rough estimate on how much such a course would cost? Would I be able to stay in French Polynesia for such a long time or would I require a working visa or some sort of long-term residency permit?

I appreciate any feedback on this matter. Have a nice day!

The ancient Polynesians crossed an ocean in small boats. But without modern tools for navigation or even a reliable chronometer, how did they know where they were on the open sea?

The stars can give you latitude. But it wasn't until Harrison that a reliable method to determine longitude was found. How did such ancient navigators cross open water so well without these?
