A list of puns related to "Oracle Bones"
In Records of the Grand Historian, Sima Qian gave a list of thirty or so Shang rulers. It was later revealed from archeological evidences that, more than 3/4 of the Shang rulers listed by Sima Qian were clearly found on the oracle bones.
Considering that Sima Qian wrote his book 1600 years after the establishment of Shang dynasty, it is astonishing that he could match the archeological evidences so well. How did he achieve this?
It's the most lindy ritual known to man, and sometimes the Divine even gives you a cop-out for being a loser:
" δ· δΉΎ Hidden dragon: Do not act "
Is anything known about other forms of writing/scripts during the Shang period? Since no bamboo scrolls from that period have survived, is there any knowledge of whether there might have been different scripts used for records or other writing that have since been lost? Is anything known of whether the Chinese had writing before the Shang oracle bone period? Obviously there are no extant examples but Iβm curious if it is mentioned in any ancient records or through historical context/inference.
Also if anyone has random interesting information on the early evolution of Chinese writing and cool archaic scripts, Iβd love to hear it
I really like none oracle, I find it flavorful and fun. I'm not very far, but just wondering if having a bone oracle go angel would have much in the way of synergy.
I'm sort of picturing a necromancer, who starts becoming good and using their powers over the dead for good instead of evil...
Would it work?
How does the oracular curse of a bones oracle work with Svetocher? Do you still treat the drained as 1 less, but still have drained? Or is that circumventing the curse
I recently picked up this books from my local library and wow! This book has been to entertaining and interesting that I just canβt put it down. Itβs set up as a narrative point of view by the author detailing his own experience when traveling China throughout the end of the 20th century. He follows the stories of multiple individuals. Itβs just a βrealβ perspective into the ordinary lives of Chinese people. For those you havenβt picked it up, I would really recommend it. But anyway, Iβve always been fascinated with reading kind of from a primary source point of view, if that makes sense. Since Iβm kind of new to the concept of oral history, would you classify this book as oral history? Or what distinguishes oral history from more of a narrative point of view as mentioned in this book. If anyone could leave me their thoughts because Iβm genuinely curious, please leave your thoughts.
Hello,
Is there a place where I can read Oracle Bones/Jiaguwen/η²ιͺ¨ζ written content, preferably translated to English (or French), and preferably accessible for free? Thanks in advance for your answers!
Hey, I am a veteran 5e player just starting my first character. I fell in love with the idea to build a necromancer going full lich mode during the campaign which sets to be from level 1-20. After researching the topic a bit I came to the conclusion I want to play a bones Oracle dipping into ritualist. The build seems fun and I am looking forward to trying giving it my best. Another player in my campaign is also very interested in the undeath theme so we Tag teamed up working on similar goals, where we found another player on the way who at least is very interested in what we are doing. Thatβs it for the story so far.
My problem with the character creation and advancement is that I do not find it very intuitive on what I need to pick concerning feats and revelation spells. The first might be something I might figure out over the course of planning out my character but the latter gives me a headache: am I right for the only revelation at first level I can pick besides soul siphon, which I given by the bones mystery, being life link? Bones gives me the related domains of death and undeath, but where do I find the spell list for these domain spells? Another question is if I can retrain revelations just like feats or are they a permanent choice?
These are my main problems up to now, but being the idiot I am, I will prep and plan out my potential character up to level 20 in advance, just so I get a deeper understanding of the class and game in general. I am doing this by a google docs spreadsheet which I will happily share if there is any resonance and anyone interested.
I appreciate any tips concerning my questions and the build in general. Thank you <3
Edit: thank you all for your help it really answered all my questions and helped me getting a better understanding of the class.

Here is the current build I am working on. I may have settled with some suboptimal picks but wanted to decide on something. If you find something else to be very important/strong/fun to use please do not hesitate to help out.
This is still a work in progress and I will add alternatives to my main choices.

Hey there friends,
I'd like some book recommendations along the lines of the topic above.
I would be really interested in recommendations of books which covers the late neolithic agricultural soieties of modern day China such as the Longshan, Erlitou and Shimao, and how these societies developed into the Shang and Zhou dynasties we know from history. Ideally books which cover both the archaeological findings, as well as the historical and semi-historical aspects of these eras.
A big bonus would be a book which contains a lot of images. I enjoy looking at artefacts, monuments, maps etcetera. And especially with the Oracle bone inscriptions and all the various artefacts such as statues, weaponry, pottery, stelae and whatever else we've uncovered from the early chinese societies, I think a book with a lot of images would be great.
Thank you very much!

The mental image I have so far (should the Guda debuting her one day be adapted into an anime) is of her gaining insight by casually grabbing the nearest polaroid camera cow skull or whatever, and then shattering it in one shot with a well-placed hand chop or even bare-knuckled punch. Does that sound about right for the Ruler of Yamatai or would it be performed differently?
The Voyage of the Bone Butterfly is inspired by Avery Alder's A Quiet Year, utopian and dystopian fiction, medieval travel narratives, and steampunk and science fantasy.

The system it's part of is still pretty pre-alpha, I'd love to hear any feedback (and I've made free community copies available). There's also a solo playtest tool that runs in your browser (hopefully!):
https://sadpress.itch.io/the-bone-butterfly-solo-playtest-tool
It's a game for 1-4 players. I've played it as a crunchy strategy skycrawl in about 30 minutes, or you could really go to town on the mapmaking and journaling aspects, and the exploration of speculative societies, law, and justice, and draw it out into something more epic.
EDIT: Adding The Voyage of the Blazing Glint, which is slightly more oriented toward solo play specifically: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1cIJb0YZcMiVR-lgN1Rtgqyl5BDsLREvqEfRBklq_c8k/edit?usp=sharing
Before I bring it to the table, am I reading the correlation between Chill Touch and the Bone Oracle benefit correctly?
>...align yourself in the confluence of positive and negative energy so as to gain negative healing,
which means you are harmed by positive damage and healed by negative effects as if you were undead.
It doesn't say you would be undead, so the Living creature effect would apply from Chill Touch?
>Living Creature The spell deals negative damage equal to 1d4 plus your spellcasting modifier. The target attempts a basic Fortitude save, but is also enfeebled 1 for 1 round on a critical failure.
Would I still have to take a Fortitude save? I'd take enfeebled for a 1d4 self heal plus spell modifier!
Hey all! Iβm planning my back up character, and Iβve decided Iβm going with Oracle. Iβve got two builds Iβm interested in. The first build I worked out is a Kobold Tempest Oracle going heavily in to Dragon Disciple feats. This one gets some awesome flavor with some sick mechanical boosts with the wings, breath weapon, dragon form, and spells.
The other build (inspired by a picture posted here a week or so ago) is a Fungus Leshy Bones Oracle with a couple Ritualist archetype feats. I really like this one for the flavor, and some of the new Divine spells really lend themselves to the Necromancer feel of this mystery. My concern is, the mystery itself seems pretty niche.
The mystery benefit is cool, but negative healing just isnβt the norm for most groups; so youβd most likely be relying heavily on your own spell slots for healing if you choose to use it.
Minor curse- half as many hp from non-magical healing. Further reliance on your own healing.
Moderate curse- Drained 1, but with poison resistance and a boost to disease, poison, and death effects saves, and crit success on a success save. Dropping a chunk of that HP can be pretty scary with the less reliable healing.
Major curse- Wounded 1, but you can auto succeed on your recovery check. This can be scary, because a crit would automatically take you to dying 3 (I think. Please correct me if Iβm wrong!). That being said, the Die Hard feat should take away this concern!
As far as the Revelation and Domain spells go, I love them and think they are great both mechanically and flavor wise.
What are yallβs thoughts on the Bones mystery? Is there something Iβve missed or am misunderstanding? How would yβall build one?
Thanks in advance!
On how its specific drained condition works, in particular. The moderate curse relevant text:
>You become drained 1, and this drained condition is cumulative with any other drained conditions you gain. This drained condition is removed only when you Refocus; effects that normally remove the drained condition reduce your drained condition to drained 1 instead.
The drained condition typically does not stack onto itself according to the redundant condition rules. Drained with different values count as different conditions as in a creature could be drained 1 and drained 2 at the same time, but you only apply the effects of drained 2 since it has the higher value, until a situation when it expires before drained 1.
So what exactly happens when the curse drained 1 condition comes into play with other drained conditions? How does it stack?
How I first imagined it is that the curse drained 1 just stacked up all the drained conditions the Oracle already has and would gain from another source. Ex: An Oracle curse drained 1 that then gains drained 1 and drained 2 becomes drained 4.
The interesting thing with this is it seems the curse drained condition seems to cannibalize the other drained conditions into one; the Bones Oracle can never have multiple drained conditions when moderate cursed. The other properties of the other drained conditions, duration and conditional removal, no longer apply and they just become part of the specific curse drained condition, which is only removed through Refocus and can't be reduced below drained 1.
The other way I thought of it is that the curse drained 1 condition just boosted every other drained conditions the Oracle already has and would gain from another source. Ex: An Oracle curse drained 1 that then gains drained 1 and drained 2 becomes drained 2 and drained 3.
With this, I'm not sure if each separate drained condition gains the specific properties the moderate curse lays out; only removed through refocus and can't be reduced drained 1.
It might come up in a game soon, so I need to make sure. Thanks!
