Ok lads and ladies, after all of Warnie's continuing criticism of Starc (read: shitting on) I decided to look into some of their International bowling stats to see just how the two compared.

I was actually pretty surprised to see that Starc has a better combined bowling average AND strike rate than Warnie across Tests and ODIs (I left out T20s because Warnie didn't play a T20I).

So here are the quick and dirty bowling average stats:

Shane Keith Warne

Test Bowling Average: 25.41

ODI Bowling Average: 25.73

(Sloppy, non-weighted) Combined Average: 25.57

Mitchell Aaron Starc

Test Bowling Average: 27.41

ODI Bowling Average: 22.45

(Sloppy) Combined Average: 24.93

Now let's look at Strike rate:

Shane Keith Warne

Test Bowling Strike Rate: 57.4

ODI Bowling Strike Rate: 36.3

(Sloppy) Combined Average Strike Rate: 46.85

Mitchell Aaron Starc

Test Bowling Strike Rate: 49.2

ODI Bowling Strike Rate: 26.1

(Sloppy) Combined Average Strike Rate: 37.65

Now, the above sloppy combined averages don't factor in the weighted average when you smooth out the ODI:Test innings ratio (I'm a writer, not a mathematician, sorry).

But if you want to crunch the numbers a bit deeper, Starc's ODI innings to Test innings ratio is 8:10.

Meanwhile, Warne's ODI innings to Test innings ratio was 7:10.

So, for Bowling Average (which is one of THE key measures we rate bowlers on), while you could make the argument that Starc played a higher ratio of his preferred format (ODIs) compared to Warnie, you could also make the counterargument that Warnie played a higher ratio of his preferred format (Tests) than Starc.

"But Warnie is a match-winner!" I hear you say. Ok, so how about 5 wicket hauls to innings?

Shane Keith Warne

Test innings per 5 wicket haul: 7.37 innings

ODI innings per 5 wicket haul: 191 innings (he took just 1 in 191 ODIs)

Average: Too lopsided to calculate without weighting it

Mitchell Aaron Starc

Test innings per 5 wicket haul: 9.76

ODI innings per 5 wicket haul: 12.375 innings

Average: better than Warnie's, no doubt

Anyway, I've done a bit of cherry-picking here. There are a lot of other big stats that work in Warnie's favour, including total wickets, economy and longevity (matches played).

And I'm by no means a Starc fanboi - although he seems a nice enough bloke. But the above stats show that Starc doesn't deserve Warnie shitting on him as much as he does.

As much as I like the other 2 extreme formats, ODI will always be my favourite format, and I feel like there has been a lack of ODIs recently. We had the test championship, IPL, T20 WC, various test and T20Is between the big teams but very few ODIs. I am really looking forward to the SA v IND ODI series already with one more test to go, anybody with me?

I was surprised to know Joe Root averages over 50 in ODIs. Absolute beast. I am not caling underrated but whom do you think are genuinely underrated batsmen in ODIs?

Test cricket went from mainstream to niche. Like Rap music is now mainstream surpassing Rock music. That doesn't mean Rock is dead.

You need enough differentiation to succeed in the marketplace. ^^[1]

The way to differentiate yourself is to act the opposite of the number 1 niche. ^^[2] What's the complete opposite of T20 cricket? Test cricket. Opposite as in attributes, like in case of cricket it means number of overs, innings etc.

When a sport like cricket gets big. It gets divided into smaller segments. ^^[2] There is nothing to rival a niche like test cricket. It will always have a set of fans which will watch anything regarding their niche.

There is less differentiation between ODIs and T20s. Colored kits, limited overs. With 2 new balls in ODIs, it's like watching 2 t20 innings at once.

What is the last bilateral ODI series you remember?
Now what is the last test series you remember? You see what I am saying.

T20s and Test matches are going to be the norm in future bilateral matches.

On the other hand, ODI world cup is always going to be rated higher than T20 world cup or WTC. Because Being first in the mind of the consumer is everything in marketing. ^^[2]

The concept of World Cup was taken by ODIs first and no other niche can compete on that. No two niches can own a single word in the mind of the consumer. ^^[2]

E.g. The word BMW reminds you of cars, BMW also sells bicycles but no one associate it with them.

T20 WC already has a rival in local T20 leagues. The concept of Test match world cup is forced and, apart from the finals, doesn't have the same vibe as others.

Finally, every marketplace becomes a two horse race. With T20s being number 1, what takes second place in your mind, ODIs or Test cricket?

Marketing is a battle of perceptions. ^^[2] TikTok never killed movies. Mobile games never killed AAA games. People like contrast in their experiences. Test cricket offers more contrast than ODIs when compared to T20s.

This is why people should stop expecting Test match should be as popular as T20, because they are never going to be.

T20 matches are like potato chips or a comic book, short term gratification with no memory after that.
