A list of puns related to "Nri"
Hello all, I am currently working in Tokyo.
I faced many difficulties when I first came, lack of proper information and etc. of course there were NRIs here but seriously I donโt know about other countries but in Japan no one will help.
Recently I saw post in sub Reddit related to Japan life about moving to japan and wanted to clarify his/her doubts.
I want to say that who all moving to japan or planning or wanting to move feel free to message me and ask any questions.
Thank you
Edit : guys sorry that if I couldnโt reply you fast, I am bit busy with work. I will make sure to answer everyoneโs question by the weekend.
What is PFIC rule? - IRS will tax any ETF/MF, that is not domiciled in US, punitively. Even the unrealized gains can be taxed (complicated process). For more - https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Passive_foreign_investment_company
In the face of such a punitive taxation rules against all the non-US mutual funds, how do US NRIs invest in Indian markets. (I suppose) it is not applicable for stocks, and one can invest directly in that. But, for passive investment, if one wants to invest in index, MFs were better option.
Can the US NRIs, who invest in both countries, share their strategies around how they handle this scenario - i.e. invest in India market and avoid the PFIC rule?
Hey guys! Mostly as the title says, my parents who are currently in Canada are looking to FIRE in India. They know if they live in Canada, they will have to work until at least 65 and even after that their pension will not be enough to afford all the costs of living in Canada. Plus the other issues with Canada such as weather is not very appealing. Furthermore, my parents didnโt really live an active healthy life so theyโre aging must faster than their age. My mom is convinced she wonโt be able to work beyond age 55. So all thins considered, it makes sense to just FIRE in India and live life here.
Situation: My parents moved to Canada 22 years ago, and since them they donโt really have much savings. However, they did get lucky and bought a house. As you might know, Canadaโs housing market is currently at an all time high, and this has allowed my parents to amass a nest egg of $600,000 CAD (3.57 Cr rupees). Additionally, my dad has company stock worth $100,000 CAD (59.5 lakhs). So if they retire at this moment, theyโd have around 4.17 cr. Furthermore, my dad is early 50s and my mom is late 40s, so they both still have at least 15+ years until they retire. Once they retire, they will be earning Canadian pension, which works out to I think $3000 CAD (178,000) per month.
I guess my question is, does the economics of FIRE in India make sense for my parents. They will have a nest egg of 4.17 cr of which they will probably have to use 1.5 cr to purchase a house. Of the 2.67 cr they think they can get 5% in a savings account, which will net them 111,250 a month. Is that enough to live off of in India. For some context, my parents are from Gujarat and that is where they will be moving back to. Once they hit 65, theyโll be getting Canadian pension so hopefully that can supplement their income. Iโm 23 and have a really great job so I donโt think my parents will have to support me. I donโt mind supporting them, but I know my dadโs pride will really struggle to accept money from me.
Now Iโll be honest, I donโt know much about India. Is it reasonable to buy a decent house for 1.5 Cr? Does 5% interest rate on a savings account make sense? What are recent developments in India that my parents should be aware of? Recently been reading up on UPI and itโs pretty cool.
My parents are pretty set on this option, but I want to ask people who have FIRE-d in India if this make sense. Thank you!
Do you ever feel the representation by abcd influencers is limited and very convenient.
Edit :- I am only talking about abcd influencers and not abcds in general.
I hate how for them India is only bollywood, butter chicken and the big fat indian wedding, that's their whole representation of india.
They never talk about real issues, politica* drama, student suicides, female safety or any outrage for that matter or even stuff like freedom fighters, real icons.
I am sure they are remotely unaware of anything important. Simply live in a bubble. .
Even when it comes to diwali, shaadi it seems like it is just for show nothing else.
I might sound a bit rude here,
If you love india so much, cash on it make a career out of it, then why not live here?
Ugly rains, potholes, crowd, politica* tragedies and then say that I love india.
These are the first people to badmouth about the country,
Like they don't want the negatives only the show sha Bollywood, chicken tikka and wedding.
My opinion might be a little bias.
Correct me if I am wrong, would like to hear your perspective as well.

I work full time and I am not really sure how to plan my parents visit for 3 months. How do you keep them busy on Weekdays when you are working? Don't they get bored?
Watched an interview about a guy who left his job in Hong Kong to return to India, became an ias and contribute to nation because he felt a strong need to develop India after experiencing other countries and the massive development there.....do all nri's feel the same at some point?
The country is seeing a never before boom in foreign investments. Startups are turning unicorns faster than ever. The political climate is getting worse but standard of living has improved (depends on where you live). New IITs and IIMs are coming up but overall quality of education has gone down.
Do you see yourself returning to India in near future ? Would you educate your children and encourage them to stay here ? If not, why ?
Edit : 95% of the respondents so far do not want to return & it's not just about money. Safety, healthcare, standard of living/peace of mind, weather & political climate play a big part. Those who want to leave seek some/all the above. And all of these reasons are true.
It is a sad news for us who can't leave the country. New government, large foreign investments, bigger cities & better infrastructure has not been enough to make India a better place to live. The fact that lot of people still call India a 3rd world country tells the whole story. And the pace at which we are growing, I don't think we will lose the tag anytime soon.

Parents home flooded three times this monsoon (Kodambakkam), previously it only happened once in 2016 and I just see this getting worse. I'm looking to buy a property so that they can live more at peace and not dread the rains. An apartment that has elevator is a must but I'm not sure if purchasing such homes in the same area makes sense. Advice? They have lived there for 8 yrs and are familiar with it.
I looked at new constructions online, and like some I saw in Besant Nagar, though the budget is a stretch (with a loan I'd be able to afford it). I have no clue where to start other than internet searches, so looking for suggestions on how to go about this.
Hi Members,
I hope this is ok to ask in this forum. So, I have a NRO account in India with ICICI and I will be visiting India this year. In the past, I have relied on either my US Credit Card or my India debit card or local family members help to pay for local expenses (and then transferred money to them from my NRO account) but I am now exploring what is the best way to pay for local costs using my NRO account and my phone instead of debit card or cash or relying on family members.
I don't want to pay using my NRE account OR my foreign credit card. I have monies left in my NRO account and want to draw down on those. I am hesitant to carry cash and using debit card always felt risky so want to avoid that as well.
Is there any mechanism to do this? Or any such technique you have used that worked well in the past? Can you share?
TIA!
I have noticed a sudden uptick in NRI posts ranting about returning to India and then abroad again.
With salaries that put them in top 1% brackets in India and they still feel discontent with living in India. They can afford all luxuries but are discontent with work culture, society, rude behaviours from family and all other things that don't work in India.
Now surely "all the other things that don't work" can be solved by throwing more money at it (maybe not clean air). Here's how you can make peace and help change the other bits.
Our work culture, our rude attitudes etc. come from a long upbringing of resource-scarce mentality. We're hyper competitive and rude often because the resources are low. It doesn't mean we don't help each other when we can, it's just harder to do it in a poor country.
Please don't expect India to act like a resource rich liberal country when the people who can change it (Politicians first and foremost, and then capitalists including NRIs) are not doing their jobs or being held accountable.
Plenty of rich conservative dictatorships in the world. Show me one poor liberal values country in the world.
It doesn't exist.
There is the virtuous loop of liberal values.
Rich countries tend be more liberal > more collaboration / best of all people > more productivity > richer country.
Help India acheive this and keep your expectations mild when moving to India. We'll all be happier.
Long story short, recently I moved to California. Yesterday night I received 2 tickets while driving.
Speeding ticket (limit 65 , I went around 110)
Driving without license( had indian international license)
Cop asked me to present myself to court.
What all should I go through and what will be the total fine I would be paying?
Has anyone tried Wellbutrin with a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptske inhibitor or just a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor? Iโm on 300mg right now and looking for something to make the brain fog/indifference go away and increase concentration. Iโve combined it with lose dose SSRIs before and just feel tired & hungry. Also Iโve tried stimulants for concentration and they just make me euphoric and even worse.

Does anyone have an idea as to when the admissions for the NRI/Foreign quota will begin? I've gotten admission letters from 3 other colleges and one of them needs me to confirm by February 22nd, 2022. However, BITS is my priority college (CSE) and I'll definitely go if I get CSE in any of the campuses. Also, with SAT Subject Tests getting cancelled, what will the deciding factor be for the admissions? The website for the international students is out of date and it still says Subject Tests are needed. Will it be just SAT and high school scores? If anyone has any information regarding the NRI quota for 2022, please do let me know, TIA.
Any one born and brought up outside India, and then relocated to Kerala - how do you find it? Do you wish you had stayed back? What is your view on education in Kerala compared to outside country? I am a young dad and considering options for my kids "homecoming" ;-)
Best Platform for NRI's to Invest in Mutual Funds in India
PS: Prefer a paperless/online platform
I am new to reddit and I don't know if this sub is the right place to rant about this or not mods you can remove it if you want to.
So I am a Indian kid 15M living in Australia. So my dad works in a Indian multinational company which has branches in Australia and they asked my dad to go to Aus and work here till late 2022.Obviously I was really excited but my life is fucked rn. I have 0 friends here. I think I will not fit in with the kids here even in a thousand years. My life is basically going to school and coming back to play games. I have not talked to a human outside my family for idk how long. Same goes for my younger sister. People here are nice but our interests don't match even one bit. I had a good social circle in India now I think that is lost too and will they be able to treat me the same way as before when I come back to India. I feel like I will be alone till I go to college or something. Video games are my only escape for now and I think I would have died without them.Sorry if this is too much I just needed to rant a bit
NRI men who are in the arrange marriage process. How's the search been like for you all ?
I often times hear how dating in the west is hard for Indian men and many including those born abroad seek arrange marriages with brides from India.
How's the search been like for y'all on that front ? Due to visa and work constraints travelling to India may not be easy for most of us. So how do you guys manage to pull it off ?
Also women that are in talks with NRI men or who potentially consider NRI men. How do you take the match forward and see if something can be worked out.
Looking forward to hearing from y'all.
PS - please no trolls and no trolling either.
In the past few days, I got too many calls from India from friends and relatives ordering requesting me to buy iPhones, PlayStations, etc. at "50% Thanksgiving discount" whether or not such deals even exist. Playstation 5s are not even available anywhere and there is literally a black market for them where scalpers are selling for high markups.
Not sure what you guys are hearing about Thanksgiving sales here. Most discounts are on garbage stuff that I wouldn't take even if they were free.
End of rant.
So hey, what's the whole deal about? I've been on these apps for 2 years now and I am coming to the end of my wits. My profile? Well, my handle is quite public, but here it goes:
Education: BITS + Double masters in EU
Occupation: Software Engineer. Salary, let's just say it's up to the mark.
Habits: Drink rarely, don't smoke, eggitarian.
Hobbies: Photography, passionate about music, travel (of course) , creativity and tech.
Personality: Consider myself sensitive, empathetic, thoughtful, extremely sincere and hard working.
Physical appearance: reasonably built , 5.6.
My parents have heard so many times now "We don't want to send the girl abroad" and so many cases I find myself with rejections where everything matches.. even the community, but something is surely up with this location thing. I do want to live short term in Europe and open to relocation; but apparently even mentioning that there's no avail. It's not like the rejections are coming in from super highly qualified profiles or someone who is a VP or PM Earning 35+, in which case I could understand someone not wanting to give up their career.
I sincerely want to understand what's up with this location thing? What's so problematic of having to move to the EU, specially if you're in tech yourself? People seems to be quite keen to move to the US and Canada, where the work life is markedly worse and in the US you can't even work.
Folks,
Can I proceed with point-2 and link it (post-conversion) to my PIS NRO bank account?
I called up helpline of X and they said only 1 PIS Trading account can be held. But I believe only 1 PIS Bank account can be held (and multiple PIS Trading accounts can be held).
Anybody has experience with this?
Trying to find out if this is possible and appreciate any/all pointers. Thanks in advance!
I moved out of India hoping to increase my chances of finding a childfree husband but unfortunately cf is a rare thing even here. now my parents are pressuring me to find a 'nice Indian boy' and tie the knot asap. I don't know what to do next. Is there any NRI here? Did you find a childfree partner? How do u all handle parents pressure even when you're abroad? would your parents be ok if you married someone non-indian?
Hello guys, I'm going to suggest those living abroad not make an NRE account to deposit their earnings esp. Gulf. My explanation is that if you look at trend, the Indian currency is losing value day by day and when we deposit in NRE account, the money is kept as Indian currency (how else do you think they get to remove all taxes)?
Example:
Suppose it was 2018 and you have 100 saudi riyal (23 mar 2018), you will get 1736 rupees. Now, in 2021, you would get for same amount 2010, which is 274 rupees more. As you increase the amount, this turns into very large quantities of difference.
I'm no financial advisor/ training in economics, but it just seemed like common sense to me. If there is anything I have missed which would make the deposit idea good, feel free to correct me.
As the title suggests, I wanted to understand how you guys manage to keep your retired ex-NRI parents engaged? I ask this because my parents are retired and their health (specially dadโs health) seems to be deteriorating faster due to inactivity. Achan even had a heart attack two years back โน; despite both my parents being kinda living a healthy life otherwise.
Dad lived an active life pre-retirement and after spending 45 years in Dubai, has relocated and settled back home since 2018. He literally has nothing to do other than watch Malayalam TV trash, watch/read fake whatsapp forwards/FB posts. At least mom is active in her gardening and stuffs.
I am really struggling to find ideas to keep him engaged. He doesnโt even have a hobby. Only thing I have seen him enjoy is playing cards with my cousins when they visit on vacations. Ini vella online rummy join cheyendi vero? :p
Hello, I moved to US some time back on work visa. I have heard from people around that being active in Indian markets as an NRI will make my tax and reporting complicated. I have been trading (no intraday, but short term) in Indian market for some time now and have developed some confidence, so I want to continue with it.
For those who have been in this situation, will trading Indian stocks actually make my tax and reporting here in US complicated?
I may be oversimplifying the "one feels the effects" part because the feeling of a recreational drug does not equal gradual improvement in mental health symptoms, but it seems to me that there is something funky going on here and I would like a further explanation. Why does Methylphenidate work instantly for ADHD but Atomoxetine takes weeks/months to start showing effects? I know that SSRIs do immediately inhibit the reuptake of serotonin (this isnโt the part that takes weeks to work) but it takes weeks for this inhibition to show a therapeutic effect. Why?
Hi Everyone,
Background- am currently in the US, looking to return by 2023 school year with a 9 year old/4 std kid. Looking to settle- Chennai/Bengaluru for now.
I have heard/read that the state language is compulsory in both states across CBSE/ICSE. Is that true?? Has anyone found a way out other than joining IB schools??
Edit: Context..to a large extent this is a forced move due to health of parents
I've observed that in countries outside India, one might find three kinds of Indians.
The first kind are a group of people who socialize only with each other. They make a mini-India in their culture and make no efforts whatsoever to learn about the local culture, language or people. You're missing out on so much.
The second kind of people stay away from Indians...because they're Indians. No other reason. Anecdotal, I've have people tell me proudly "I don't make friends with Indians". The logic escapes me. Why judge a person solely on the basis of their nationality? You're missing out on so much.
The third kind of people are people like me, who make these posts on Reddit because they think they're better than the other two kinds. (Satire)
What do you think? Let's discuss.
