I come from a psychology background and hopefully I will be studying for a MSc in Neuroscience this year. From what I understand and the very limited original research I have done myself, our current frameworks of psychiatric nosology lack construct validity, not least because of their poor predictive validity but also the lack of reproducible sufficient or necessary biomarkers for nearly a century of researching them. Furthermore, there is mounting evidence of transdiagnostic mechanisms and biomarkers, and examples I have looked at would be trauma, dissociation and psychosis in a general population sample, but also how maladaptive meta-physical beliefs seem to be shared between anxiety and distressing hallucinatory experiences.

Therefore, not only are psychiatric diagnoses questionably valid as distinct βnaturalβ entities but they seem to worsen outcomes which presents a significant ethical problem that endangers the most vulnerable and mentally distressed.
In this context, what was Karl Poppers position on psychiatric diagnoses, if any. Particularly as they have the same falsifiability problem present in psychoanalysis due to the lack of identifiable diagnosis-specific biomarkers (βWhy does Kerry hear voices? Because they have schizophrenia, why do they have schizophrenia because they hear voicesβ, ironically probably between 5-7% of the pop hear voices). What would his position be now, considering these more recent findings?

Please consider changing rule #6. I love this sub, but the recent influx of NSFW tagged posts that get all the upvotes, just seem wrong when there are good solid DAD jokes being overlooked because of them.
