Dearomatizing [4+1] Spiroannulation of Naphthols: Discovery of Structurally Nonโ€Traditional Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescent Materials

The development of streamlined synthetic routes to spirofluorene derivatives, in particular those with a donorโ€acceptor (Dโ€A) system, is an appealing task in the field of organic functional materials. In this work, we disclose a palladiumโ€catalyzed direct [4+1] spiroannulation of orthoโ€Cโˆ’H bonds of naphthols with cyclic diaryliodonium salts to construct spirofluorenyl naphthalenones (SFNP) under mild reaction conditions. This spiroannulation not only directly transforms the hydroxyl group into the carbonyl group, but also tolerates reactive functional groups such as the halo groups, which provide an opportunity to rapidly assemble structurally nonโ€traditional thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) materials that feature a carbonyl group with an adjacent spirofluorenyl unit as the acceptor. As an illustrated example, the OLED device utilizing the assembled DMACโ€SFNP as the host material exhibits a low turnโ€on voltage of 2.5 V and an ultraโ€high external quantum efficiency of 32.2%. This work not only gives us an inspiration for designing structurally nonโ€traditional TADF materials, but also displays the charm of Cโˆ’H activation as a revolutionary synthetic strategy in the innovation of optoelectronic materials.

Beta-naphthol to rac-BINOL on +100g scale, how?

Dear chemists of Reddit, I would like to ask, that is here anyone who made racemic BINOL from beta-naphthol on a larger scale? I have to make 500g and the previous attempts gave a big nothing.

First I melted it with FeCl36H2O on a steam bath, but a large percent of my compound decomposed and got a less than 3% yield. For second I have tried to mix the naphthol with FeCl36H2O in n-propanol, than heat it to reflux, but nothing happened for 2 hours.

I would be really happy if anyone could give any advice.

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Dropped my best ever dad joke & no one was around to hear it

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
